My setup is the 500GB from Apple I got with mine, that's currently the only SATA II drive in here. I had 300GB and 400GB SATA I drives that were in my G5 that are now in here. I saw a 400GB Hitachi on newegg yesterday with a 16MB cache that will be arriving tomorrow. That'll become my new boot drive.

I've heard reports of the 7200.10 not being compatible with the Mac Pro. Did you experience any problems with your drive?

The drives themselves will work fine. There is just a write bug in the firmware that prevents the 7200.10s from writing at full speed, there is about a 35% performance hit (it'll top out at about 40MB a second).

I'm thinking of buying a Mac Pro and using my 160GB HD and 300GB HD from my powermac G5 in the spare drive bays. What I'm wondering is if I can boot up from my current boot drive in the Mac Pro. The OS updates have been different for the PPC and intels, so I'm guessing that there would be some sort of compatibility problem. Is that right?

Thanks!
yt

Yeah that won't work unfortunately. :( Not only due to the G5 using the PPC OS X but the disk format for a boot drive on an Intel Mac has to be GUID (whereas the PPC can just use MacOS Extended. The GUID format has to be set under the Partition tab in Disk Utility BTW.

nope am running 7200.10 as my windows drive and it is just fine. I also have 2x250maxtors running as a raid0

they vibrate like a bitch and cause my whole case to resonnate, had to put a couple wedges into the drive caddys to stop it ! So fas this si the only complaint I have with my mac pro

I had 2 Samsung 160GB SATA drives from my last machine, so I popped those in there. I know Samsung isn't really the king of hard drives but these are not bad drives at all and are fine for just music and multimedia storage.
Samsung bought the old Fujitsu HD business. I never had a problem with one of their drives, always cool and quiet. I still have two 13 GB Fujitsus that have been running 24/7 for the past six years. I just got a 200 GB Samsung for the Mac Pro. Now I'm just waiting for the Mac Pro itself.

original Seagate Barracuda 160GB HD that came with my G5. this way i can port over my old files (but not using Apple Migration Assistant... cuz i don't trust that thing). it's already got 3G, so speed is sufficient.

i'm also in the process of adding a Cheeta 15K rpm SCSI HD with ATTO UL5D.

can't wait to get 2 more HD for RAID...

Thanks for that. Bummer. Would the intel mac read the drives at all? I mean, If I popped them in, would I be able to get files off of them? I'm guessing yes, but...

I have a pair of 250GB SATA(1) disks. Are you able to use first generation SATA disks on MacPro?

Yes, SATA is totally backwards compatiable.

Using a 150G WD Raptor as a main drive and the 160GB it came with as storage.

LaCie external drives-I don't recommend

I bought a couple of the Porsche design LaCies, and their power cables SUCK. First of all the pins bend easily, they are somewhat easy to plug in upside down, bending the pins, but most of all, they FALL OUT easily, which could be deadly.
The company was nice enough to send me a new one, and it fits the same, very loosely.
This is not a pro drive.

I use a pair of WD3200KS 320GB 16MB HDs as video drives, the OEM 160GB Seagate 7200.9 as boot. The WD are much quieter.

i have a LaCie d2 external HD, and i've had it for about 2 years. no problems whatsoever. very stable and durable.

granted, i bought mine as refurbished and the 1st week i had it, there were some intermittent problems. but after i contacted LaCie and exchanged for new one, it's been all good. their customer support is nice indeed.

no probs with power cable.

btw, i would recommend having both FW and USB for external drives, just in case.
