The 4th gen iPad is 8 years old, isn’t it? I’d say that’s pretty outdated. You could probably get each of them the 8th gen and pay the same as one new Air. Just a suggestion. I guess that might make it less special for your older son, knowing that his little brother got the same iPad. I don’t know anything about rewarding/raising kids. Don’t mind me.
Agreed. Definitely worth considering.

I have a couple of iPad 4s. I kept them on iOS 6 for the longest but eventually updated due to the GPS bug. They’re really slow and being stuck at iOS 10, a lot of new apps don’t work (e.g. Disney+). Normally, I give away old iPads to extended family but I don’t think anyone would take these at this point. I’ll likely trade in to Best Buy and use the proceeds on a Sky Blue Air 4 (pretty much a whimsical buy).

Also please put restrictions on purchases such as Family Sharing and and Ask to Buy. As much as I like chatting here I don’t want to talk to you on the phone when there are unrecognized charges on your credit card

The reason I always go for the newer models is so I can pass them down to my younger child and it not be to outdated in a couple years. And my 10 year old actually takes pretty good care of his phones/iPads.

Same. Around 6months ago, when the 2020 11" iPP came out, I bought a new-in-box 2018 11" iPP at a good discount, and gave my 5yr old daughter my 3yr old 2017 10.5" iPP. She loves it. Before that, she had been using the OG iPad Air, which had definitely been getting slower - the educational apps she uses would take 10secs to load, videos would take forever to load, etc.

I like the idea of kids getting your older tech - still more than good enough for them, they still get the feeling of "getting something new" (to them!), and I think you come out ahead in the "if you were to sell it, you wouldn't get as much for it as having to buy a new lower-end model" (eg. resale value for my 2017 10.5" iPP probably lower than buying a new low-end iPad). Also allows you to more easily justify upgrading yourself :D
