I was about to ask about this for my next iPad purchase. I have a 10.5 at the moment, and as you say on movies the black bars are quite big.

Do you have a pic of the comparison in the black bar on a 10.5 and 11 so I can compare? How big is the difference?

Thanks

Here's a comparison I found.

Remember that iPads are far taller than a 16:9 aspect ratio, so all HD content will have large black bars. This, along with other things made the 12.9 the better option.

Well, the 12.9" has the same 4:3 screen aspect ratio as the 10.5" iPad Pro, and thus the 12.9" will have large black bars on 16:9 material. The most efficient use of the screen real estate is on the 11". While the image on the 12.9" will be larger, it will be less efficient in using the screen space due to the shape of the screen.

The 12.9" iPad Pro is 2732x2048. For 16:9 material, it is 2732x1536 = 4.20 Megapixels.
The 11" iPad Pro is 2388x1668. For 16:9 material, it is 2388x1343 = 3.21 Megapixels.

The screen size of the 12.9" iPad Pro is about 40% larger than the screen size of the 11" iPad Pro, but the 16:9 image size is about 30% larger.

Yeh I wouldn’t want the 12.9” one as too large. Have the 1G now for wife, and I know it’s physically smaller but my 10.5” is better size.

I’m just thinking of next iPad purchase, which is best as my 10.5” with 16:9 films the black bars seems huge and wondered if 11” was any better. So looking at above it is, and even better (for smaller black bars) than the 12.9” to.

"Media consumption" is not just 16:9 video material . It can also be books, comics, PDFs, newspapers or magazine websites, or even your collection of old TV shows. Can be many things.

That's why I mentioned different aspect ratios of course. In fact, I specifically mentioned old 4:3 TV shows in my other post, and how the 11" offers no screen real estate advantage over the 10.5" with that sort of content.

Do you really need a pro version for media consumption?
Well, depends on your disposable income you can spend on one of these, but there are several advantages to the iPad Pro line including.

1. Quad speakers
2. Wide colour gamut
3. Larger screen
4. Higher brightness screen
5. True Tone
6. Laminated display with anti-reflective coating
7. ProMotion

Many of those features are in the iPad Air 3, but not all of them, and the iPad Air 3 isn't exactly cheap when compared to the 10.5" iPad Pro.

Unlikely that one needs it, but just like EugW pointed out there are some cool advantages over other models. The OP is also not asking for the newest one but the best bang for your buck.

I had a pro 10.5 before it developed the famous white spot issue. I now have a iPad 7. Only thing I miss from the pro are the quad speakers (not that the speakers on the 7 are bad).

USB-C port means it can drive a 4K or 4K external display, and at full speed.

I suspect that the higher mic quality on the 2020 means that there may be other advantages that show up later...
