Techradar reporting that potentially only the 15 Pro & Pro Max with the more powerful A17 Pro chip will get full on device AI features (obviously the 16 series debuting with iOS 18) Even the A16 devices, 15 & 14 Pro series may have restrictions.

“Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested in his latest Power On newsletter that iOS 18's new AI features – which could include a more natural Siri and voice memo transcriptions – may be restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, plus the new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro series.

Referring to the new AI features, Gurman stated that "most of the on-device features will be supported by iPhone, iPad and Mac chips released in the last year or so." For the iPhone, that would mean the A17 Pro, which landed in September 2023, but probably excludes the A16 Bionic, which arrived in September 2022”

Arcticle here -

Sounds about right. A17 Pro, A17, and M3. Maybe limited features on M2 since iPad Air just came out with it.

Apple's goal is to sell new iPhones and iPads, not give away new features to old devices.

Anyone know what AI capabilities will be available on Android phones?

If it's baked into the OS and available to Galaxys and Pixels, Apple might be less restrictive on what iPhones will get AI.

With Apple, it's always "well we need the latest device"

as a 15 Pro owner, that would bother me.

It will probably include 15 Pro/Max since it has A17. More importantly, Apple needs devs to test it with available hardware after WWDC.

Hey Siri - write a best selling novel that will make me rich
Siri?
Siri??

Tom starts to swear and Siri plays #$^& the Police by Ice-T and Body Count.

I hold out hope for something that will not call the police, try to AI generate inappropriate messages/images or have me interacting with law enforcement 🤪

Tom

As expected, "Many of the on-device AI capabilities will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later to work. Macs and iPads, meanwhile, will need at least an M1 chip."

Looks like they were generous on the M-series.

Some people are gonna be really peeved off if this is the case, especially those who got the 15/15 Plus that doesn’t look like it’s aging well.

Anyone bothered by this iOS 18 and new AI features will be forced to upgrade their device early.

All speculation at this point though.

So i'll be glad to buy the “inferior” iPhone 15 that can’t support AI features at a nice discount.

Apparently only the 16 Pro series will get the full AI experience even the 15 Pro series will be more limited. Got to sell those new models.

Apple has always sold the iPhone 14/15 as last year's model though. It uses n-1 chip.

Apple further signals n-1 by giving it last year's features:

iPhone 14: Uses notch. Lacks Dynamic Island.
iPhone 15: Lacks Action Button.
iPhone 16: Uses smaller 6.1-inch instead of 6.3-inch display.

Rumors suggest A17 Pro devices will get the full experience as well as the new 16/16Pro's

Seems doubtful to me. Due to the fact the latest rumours are saying that the neural engine is meant to be substantial improved over the A17 on the new chips.

Are you suggesting they wouldn't have developers testing new features until the 16 series is released in September? iOS18 is launching next week and not having a device capable of testing features that are the showpiece of the new operating system would be a complete 180 from what Apple has consistently done in the past. Also the just released M4 has 38TOPS compared to the A17's 35TOPS so I'd say the A17 Pro is more likely than not getting the full experience

Or they could simply announce the AI features and mark it as coming soon. They release point updates with AI features that exclusive to iPhone 16 Pro.

That’s how Apple generate second waves of demand on new iPhone 16 Pro after initial release.

It'll be iPhone 16 only.

iPhone sales are in decline. Apple is known to ration the camera features - remember how iPhone 14 got Photonic Engine but iPhone 13 doesn't? Both are based on A15. Even stuff like 80% charging limit is artificially limited to new devices.

There's no doubt in my mind on-device AI will be limited to iPhone 16. It's a bigger selling point than camera features.
Makes a lot of sense put this way

But rumours point towards at least 15 Pro series receiving a good chunk of the AI features

That's probably accurate. 90% of the features will available for iPhone 15 Pro/Max. Apple will leave remaining 10% unique for iPhone 16 series.

Not sure, but I am more curious about what unique AI functionality the iPhone 16 will have.

True. Also I think the M4 chips neural engine also tells us that the A18 Pro neural engine won’t be that much of a jump from A17 Pro.
A18 pro / M5 might get a new gen neural engine.

Not really, A17 Pro Neural Engine is a lot better than M3 and only slightly behind M4 and was released in a similar time frame, I expect A18 Pro to have a substantially better Neural Engine than M4.

But I expect A17 Pro to get the same AI features as the new M4 iPad.

Its nothing to do with the A17 chips, Tensor runs gemini fine.

It's all about the RAM and Apple has skimped on it for YEARS, now they're playing catch up and its come to bite them in the butt for being so cheap.

ALL new pixels have 8GB of RAM, even the $499/£449 Pixel 8a so it can handle some gemini nano stuff.

Only the iPhone 15 Pros have 8GB RAM which is embarrassing and means everyone else will miss out.
