If you can swing it price wise and have other external storage, I would get the 512SSD. Those are my plans anyway. Not sure other specs would impact me the way I use the computer.

Mine too - hoping for USB 3.1 at the end of this year then I'd jump on an I7 with a 256GB SSD (512 if I can afford it), and an external SSD

I'm one of those poor suckers who bought the low end 27 inch with the 1TB fusion drive. So far it's a very speedy machine and the display is amazing. Not sure why people seem to think this model sucks. Whatever :).
I agree with you.
The problem is that most people think that slower=slow.
It's true that 1Tb FD is a bit slower than 2Tb which is a bit slower than full SSD.
But 1Tb FD is fast enough to have a smooth and pleasant machine without spending too much.
The 1Tb HDD is really slow and I don't recommend it, but 1Tb FD is not a bad choice.
It depends on what you do with you iMac.
If it's for home, multimedia, internet, office ... it's fast enough.

To me, yes at first glance they do seem similar. But, from a cost perspective and longevity, I started to learn (first Mac, ever), and understand quickly that they are rather different. Internally, that is.

For the sake of longevity, I upped to the 2TB drive, with 128GB SSD. Now, if I had the funds, I'd have gone with a custom build, 1TB SSD. Alas, I don't roll like that...

27" i7 3.4GHz 32GB RAM 128/3TB Fusion - Late 2012*!

Can't say for sure how many Macs i've owned - maybe 20-25-30.... starting with an Apple IIe around 1984. I have 3 in the house right now.

*To be fair, I am thinking about going to a late 2015 model - but the specs are similar at first glance, no?

I edit 4K footage. I'm not making money from it, so I figure, meh, who cares? FCPX is plenty fast enough, and when I'm ready to render I just walk away for a bit, heh :)

No doubt the larger fd's and SSD's are faster. It's just that the 1TB fd suits my needs as a consumer, not a pro.

Edit: I'm a bit confused. I see some people saying they have a 3.3GHz model (i5). The late 2015's only had a 3.2GHz i5, yeah? Hm. I could be wrong.

I also edit videos in FCPX, and the small 1Tb FD is not an issue.
All is smooth...
Of course, sometimes, when you run an app that has not be launched for one month it's a bit slower.
But I am not ready to pay 1080€ more just to be sure all my files are on an SSD including files I never read.

1tb ssd. Same as with my previous model. And what the next model will be (unless apple decides to deliver 2tb ssd).

Yep. FWIW when I edit footage I'm using a USB3 external 4TB drive since 1TB is tiny. Thank goodness for those optimized reference files.

Anyone thinking of buying an iMac prior to the 13th June? As others have stated, I doubt there will be an announcement about a newer iMac, but...

I would wait at this point, but I did buy a new 5K recently as I don't see a major CPU and GPU upgrade till 2017.

How's Seattle? I'm in PDX myself.

The only thing that would get me to upgrade having such a new machine already is maybe if they decided to throw Xeon's in there and make it an iMac Pro :p

Do you have an external drive for your 'data'? Curious...
I'll just butt in here, I don't see how he wouldn't.

512 is a good size for a boot drive along with your apps and even some other files, but if you're dealing with any amount of data at all, 512 won't cut it.

There is a strong argument to get the 2tb fusion because you can unfuse it, and then you have 2 tb of internal storage at your disposal.

And I'm sure the speed of running off the 128ssd on its own vs the 512 is virtually indistinguishable.

There's my $.02.

M395 2TB, put in another 16GB of Ram for total 24GB. This is my 2nd iMac, I have a late 2007 7,1 i believe. Turned it into my wife's computer.

I have a Synology NAS with 20TB of storage and also 1TB of iCloud where most of my docs and photos live.
And with Apple Music I don't download and store music anymore, I mean I still have all my previous songs stored but I haven't downloaded a single new song or album since subscribing.
