Which mail provider is the best?

hey guys,

Currently I’m on Yahoo but push doesn’t work and sometimes my mails are shown 15 minutes after they arrived and sometimes even one day if I don’t update manually.
Besides yahoo has massive data security issues. So I want to change.

Which provider can you recommend for iOS?

I don’t want to use their app anyway just the stock iOS mail app.

Gmail works fine in the stock mail app on iOS/MacOS but I don't believe there's any push. I haven't noticed any delays though, and you can always use the web interface.

Well you did say in your original post that push doesn't work in Yahoo so I assumed you knew, however if you Google gmail push there are reports that, if true, make this a moot point. As I said, I've never noticed any delays that make me think that push isn't working but it's often a complaint on forums.

Yeah but how come that it doesn’t have push and/or push doesn’t really work?

Have been using Gmail and its iOS app forever, no issues at all, emails instantly popping up as app red bubbles, banners, etc., depending on how you configure it. The advantage of using a dedicated app is that you can sort all the incoming mail into folders (called "labels" by Google) straight away and I find it is much better optimised for touch control and readability on the phones and tablets.

I use Outlook. It works with ActiveSync on iOS devices and uses standard IMAP protocols, unlike Google's version with a confusing distinction between labels and folders.

"Best" is tough. I like a lot of flexibility Gmail has, and extensions you can use, but not how it performs on mobile devices. It is completely hit or miss sometimes in Apple Mail (yes I know 3rd party and I beta test for a lot of those companies, but your shouldn't HAVE to use 3rd party).

Yes, that's an Apple problem because of their fight with Google not implementing IMAP IDLE; but sucks nonetheless.

Im also clinging onto my free Google Apps account from back in the day for my domain/small business. Outlook.com Premium to use your own domain is very compelling at $19/year, but then 2nd year and on is $50 which is a huge price hike. For $2/month even I would bite long term.

Been using Gmail client for over 10 years, works flawlessly, receive emails perfectly, and very glad I have never had issues as some seem to have with other providers. I use the Gmail app which I have no issues with whatsoever. Used the default Mail app for about 5 weeks back with iOS 7 but kept getting headaches due to the design/interface. Very happy with the Gmail app. Notifications come through immediately as well, and the predictive response is more helpful than I would have thought.

Gmail here as well. Notifications are instant and it successfully sorts my mails. Very happy overall.

Actually I was thinking about getting gmail. Why did you move?

The reason being is that I recently got a Lenovo ThinkPad T470s that came with windows 10 pro and 1TB of Microsoft one drive included and since outlook Microsoft now offers a similar package as google drive and storing of personal information I’m giving them a try. Outlook 2016 I was not able to set up my gmail account, but it worked flawlessly with outlook email, so I migrated all contact, calendar entries and eventually my cloud info to OneDrive and outlook for now. Google charges for the same 1TB of storage $9.99/mo and with my new ThinkPad T470s I’m getting all these services for free pretty much.

Gmail only support push on iOS mail built-in mail client for paid accounts. So I would not recommend that as a new user. Personally I have shadow iCloud account (iOS support more than one iCloud account) I forward all my mail to. That works well. The outgoing server is setup for Google, so it works seamless and recipients will not know. Only disadvantage is that read/flags etc. Are not syncronized between my shadow iCloud account and Google account.

If you like security ProtonMail and Tutanota seem to be the best ones. But there is no IMAP/POP3 (yet). At least for ProtonMail there was an IMAP beta test a while ago but it might never happen because their security model doesn't make much sense then anymore.

Both have mobile apps and otherwise only work in a browser.

Me too...but I have been using it since 2004. Love it. I send a lot of email and haven't had any issues.

Switched to outlook from gmail when MS started with @outlook. Mostly did it cause I was quick and got my full name without any special characters compared to my gmail account. Been using it ever since on my iPhone with the default mail app and push has always worked. MS had some issues with outlook (even hotmail I think) maybe a year ago where people (inducing me) had problems with receiving and sending mail. This lasted for a week or two intermittently. Apart from that it has worked perfectly.

An excellent option for push and live syncing of new items, edits, read status, deletes in the native Mail app on iOS and macOS is Fastmail.

I had been jumping around between paid google apps and office 365 accounts for years before stumbling across Fastmail. So happy I did.
