my camera is the D610.
Most specs and functions have been explained on here.
Both the D800 and D610 are awesome.
The weatherproofing is the same (look up: youtube "chasing the light") and the D610 is lighter.
The D610 is also easier to repair because of its plastic parts.
If the magnesium body of the D800 cracks Nikon will likely not replace it.
You should not use the HDR feature in camera if you are serious. Expose yourself on a tripod and use photoshop.
The D610 is a pro body and i can recommend it highly!

You have many primes in Nikon?
If you do, get the Nikon D600 or D610.
If you dont have Nikon lenses, move to Canon and get the 6D. And if you have lot's of money, get the 5D mark III.
Just a quick reference:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/6d.htm

My father is pro photographer, and He is and always have been Nikon (D200, D300, D800 and now D610). And the D610 is a really good camera (1.5 years newer than the D800).
Anyway, my 6D regularly get's better results.

The photographer is not the camera.

Are you seriously quoting Ken Rockwell ..... ? ......... :D. :D

Why not? easy to read, good insight!
And I really think the D610 is a better choice over the D800.
(but the 5d/6d is a better choice over both, and the Fuji X100s is a really good choice to)
At the end, the gear doesn't take pictures.

Well Ken Rockwell does have a certain questionable reputation and his page is supposed to be comedic fiction according to his own words. Some photo forums will actually ban you for linking to it :D its good that this isnt a real photography forum.

You are right: its all about the photgrapher.
Go to youtube and search for "chasing the light"
Its obviously advertisment for nikon but still amazing what they did with just the D600.

There is no point in arguing about camera brands because they all make excellent cameras.
I did go for the D610 because its an allround pro camera.
But i wouldnt say its better or worse then the D800 or even D4 because those cameras are more spezialized.

I think the 5dIII is overpriced and a bit outdated.
Canon has shown a lot of invention with its 70d af system. Im looking forward to the 5d IV
Still i got the D610 for video after comparing it with the canons.
Even though canon has a reputation in this field i found the video quality in the D610 better.
The 5d and 6d seemed to soft and not sharp enough.
(Again look at movies and shows filmed with the D610)

This is just my personal opinion and at the end of the day the differences are marginal.

I have absolutely loved my D200, but I really think that half frame 10 megapixel sensor just isn't cutting the mustard anymore.

The D300 seems very overpriced for what it is, so thats narrowing me down to a D610 or a D800, but there's quite a price disparity for them.
...
How is it not cutting the mustard?

Here is what Thom Hogan has to say about upgrading from a D200 it's a little dated but still something worth reading.

Remember going from a DX to FX sensor means you may need a different selection of lenses to cover the same effective focal range.

I am still using a D200 and would right now probably get a D300s if I had to replace it.

The quality of images is no longer comparable to other images from more modern camera.

Thats the least informative link I've ever seen.

While the link may have been short of information, it does give you a couple of points to think about.

I think it being "A long stretch" and "that I'll need to change lenses" is a bit obvious, but thanks for the link anyway

Got my camera today finally, went for the Nikon d800, with the 24-70 f2.8. Taken a quick couple of shots in my bedroom, but I'm leaving it on charge and if the weather is nice tomorrow I'm going to go for a walk with it. :D

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Welcome to the D800 club. You won't regret your purchase. I was looking at some images I made last night at dusk, with the 14-24 on a tripod, ISO 100, 6-8 second exposures of a Zen garden I'm building and the detail was just astonishing. You'll find the same thing.

I also went from D200 to D7000 when the D7K came out. But recently, I wanted to move up to FX since most of my glass are suitable. So I went into the shop with the intention of buying a D610, but came out with a Df :)

Needless to say, I am pretty happy with it. Kind of reminds me my FM2n and I can use my AIS lenses as well.

So, if you have the glass, go for FX and if your budget allows Df is just excellent.

Congrats on the purchase! I recently just sold all my Canon gear to go with the D800. I haven't regretted the decision one bit!
