i think 9.7 could become the lower cost model..i think 10.5 would be a sweat spot for many people not too big and not too smallI still don't see a 10" ipad happening. It doesn't make sense to me to add a new size that is that close to the 9.7". The only way I can maybe see it happening is if they were to make it a 16:9 screen aimed more at movie/TV consumption.
My intent right now is to upgrade from my 9.7" iPad 4th gen to a 12.9" iPad Pro 2nd gen.

They won't necessarily drop the price of the Pro and discontinue the Air 2. They might keep the Air 2 around at the same price and discontinue the Pro. It wouldn't be the first or even second time they've done something similar.I think the lower cost model will be the 2016 model 9.7" iPad Pro, which will get a $100 price cut, just like they have done with every other new release (the Air 2 will be discontinued).
Same with the 12.9" iPad Pro, they will have a new 2017 model and the 2016 model will get a price cut.
They also did it with the iPad mini 3 and, while not really the same scenario, the iPad 5s. If Apple wants a low cost iPad, what better iPad to sell than the one they already have for really cheap that still performs really well?True they have done it before. When the iPad 4th gen came out they scrapped the 3rd gen and kept the 2nd gen, but the iPad 2nd Gen was only about 1.5 years old, and the 3rd Gen was kind of a misfit.
The iPad Air 2 will be 2.5 years old if we are talking about a spring release. Then to keep selling that for another year or more, I don't think Apple will do that.
