Thanks for this link! I am checking it out right now. Say, do you know how to put the 'Library' icon back on the bar and also in my home folder? I found out that you have to press 'Command' while in Finder's 'Go' tab, in order to reveal 'Library,' but I don't know how to have the actual icon present where it's usually supposed to be.

Aw, that's disappointing. Well, I don't have a back-up or anything. I don't think you can go back and install an earlier version of ML over a newer version of ML, without wiping everything. Maybe the only thing I can do is upgrade to Mavericks.

EDIT: So I decided to test Mavericks on the machine. The only other HD I had available was my Windows one, and Windows never takes priority - so I wiped it w/o a back-up ;-). I am using it as a test dummy for Mavericks, just to see how the system runs. Apparently there are issues with the 10.9.2 update, but maybe the version of SFOTT I downloaded has already figured that out. Gonna try the combo update on the test dummy and see what happens.

EDIT (again): So I ended up getting the latest version ever of Mavericks up and running on the machine. I found the SFOTT guide on re-patching the system (since update 10.9.2 reverses the patch that makes it bootable on 32-bit EFI Macs), which really helped.... However, Mavericks is acting worse, in terms of the problems that I had stated with Mtn. Lion. I know it sounds stupid, but in addition to slowdowns with loading applications, I have an issue with the following: Minecraft runs at a laggy 15 FPS (at the lowest), when it should be running at around 95 FPS at most. Apparently, many others have had this issue with Mavericks.

Amidst all of these issues, I've decided to roll back to Mtn. Lion. Hopefully none of its updates cause re-patching to be needed, but at least I know how to do so if need-be. Question - I am still afraid of the 10.8.5 update, but I want things to be as up-to-date as possible, without too many updates lingering from within the 'Updates' section of the App store. You said that you were safely on 10.8.3, but what about 10.8.4? Are there any known issues with it? I am just trying to proceed with caution, given that I've been through hell and back with this so far.

Edit: So I ended up rolling back to 10.8.3; I won't try 10.8.5, and not 10.8.4 until I hear back from you about ITS safety. Things are running okay; the largest limitation seems to be the hard drive or something. The 'hiccups' I was referring to seem to happen with applications that haven't been opened for some time, or while the computer is under some CPU load; in said event, any given application will take a bit longer to open. It really bugs me. With an SSD, I am sure everything would be fine, but it's not likely that I'd get one. I actually decided, though, to go with a fresh installation, rather than keeping this old user that was even from an installation of the previous owner's. I'm hoping that there won't be any significant slow-down as the installation sees use, etc. But anyway, so far so good.

Hello. Hope you're enjoying the weekend. I once tried Mountain Lion 10.8.4 for about a week without problems using either the Radeon 5870 Mac version or the Nvidia 285gtx , also the Mac edition. I also have the Nvidia 770gtx and 780gtx, both flashed. The seller of the 780gtx card advised me upgrading to 10.8.5 will "break" the Nvidia driver because the chipset is different with the 770gtx. The 770gtx will work fine in 10.8.5. Though I am not sure, probably the 10.8.4 or 10.8.5 will work fine in your Mac Pro. Best to first clone your original 10.8.3 boot drive so you could easily revert back to 10.8.3 in case of problems. Normally, whenever a new OSX update is released, I would make sure I have a clone copy of my boot disk for safety. I use Carbon Copy Cloner app to clone my HDs.

Same to you!

What made you go back to 10.8.3? I have a current clone (although not Mountain Lion) which I need to move out of the way first. Either that, or I may just have enough space left on it to make a partition. (I use CCC as well; it's a great application.) The current HD I am using, which was my Windows drive, is a little noisy and feels as if it's hindering my Mac's abilities just a bit, but otherwise it's fine. Maybe later on I can get another SSD and put it in this. Needless to say, I did purchase my first SSD months ago and put it in the Mac Pro (in spite of its limitations of SATA II [?]), but I swapped it to my MacBook Pro, which badly needed it. Well, anyway, with that, this thing should be good for some more years. Mountain Lion's obsolescence is imminent, but I hopefully won't be needing applications that require something above. Funny - I don't think I have had Apple's most current OS since I got a new iMac G5 with Panther--possibly Tiger, later on.

I was told that with 10.8.5 ML, certain Nvidia drivers get "broken" for a specific chipset, though I am not sure if this is related to your problem. It's the reason why I am still on 10.8.3. Try to go back to 10.8.3. I normally keep a clone of my previous OS HD so in case of problems after updates, it's easier to revert.

That is a bunch of malarkey. That is what happens when the people flashing the card have no idea how or why it works. 10.8.5 is just fine for a properly flashed GTX780.

That said, I seem to recall that there is no OpenCl for GK110 cards in 10.8 of any version. The GTX780 comes in 2 different device id's. The "1004" ones are usually 3GB and have wider compatibility. The ones that use "1007" are a little more limited in compatibility as they came later.

As far as the 8800GT 1GB he is using, the only real limitation it has is an inability to run VGA displays. Otherwise, it is actually a GTS250 with a rom that is soft-strapped back to 8800GT for the very reason of keeping it working with Apple drivers far into the future. Both the PC BIOS and the EFI had to be modded to accomplish this, as it is a G92b chip, faster and cooler then the G92a that shipped with cMP. Usually these have fan issues but myself and another clever gentleman spent some time getting it perfect.

It will not have any issues with 10.8.4 or 10.8.5 or any OS since then to today. It's a great card that I am very proud of. It is in fact the fastest Nvidia card with a boot screen for 1,1 and 2,1.

There were 780 gtx with either the older chipset A1 or the newer B1. If my memory is correct, the A1 revision chip works fine with ML 10.8.4 or 10.8.5. The B1 chip which was based on the Titan, is the one that may not work with 10.8.4 or 10.8.5 as explained to me. I'll probably try the card with 10.8.5 when I get some free time as for now I am swamped with rush design projects as the client is all over me.

About the 8800GT 1gb, I did not doubt the card's capabilities. It's a good card for the 1,1 or 2,1 Mac Pro and I didn't think it won't work with 10.8.4 or 10.8.5

My weekend was sort of tiring as I had to work on some rush jobs until past 2am. It's fine though as best to be kept busy. It's only now I got the chance to visit the forum. A client of mine told me he had a problem with 10.8.4 using Premiere Pro being too slow. It could be an isolated problem, and for precaution I went back to 10.8.3 Not generalizing that we should just stick to 10.8.3 It's just up to one's personal preference. I used to have a PowerMac G5 with Tiger and Leopard. They ran fine and those were the fun days too.

Oh, I know that you can drag it to the bar; I am probably just being ridiculous, but I wanted to have my 'Library' folder appear in my home folder like it's supposed to.

But these are two different things. You have:

1. HDD/Library
2. HDD/Users/username/Library

What do you exactly mean then by "home folder"?

Sorry about putting another post on this old thread… I know it has been a few months since. However, I am actually considering trying the 10.8.5 update. I now have an ATI Radeon 5770, so no Nvidia issues to worry about. Do you know if I need to re-patch for the 10.8.4 and 10.8.5 updates? I am going to update in order and NOT do the combo update. I know how to re-patch the boot key, as there are simple instructions on how to do so, but I would like to know before diving into it. The process is a bit annoying to go through.

If I get an SSD for this machine, it may be worth trying Mavericks again. If the SFOTT people can Get El Capitan working, that will be another possibility. Mountain Lion (especially 10.8.3) is getting a little old. Being my best machine, I'd like to keep it more up-to-date.
