iOS 15.x devices should have no problem with app compatibility until probably 2028?

64GB storage should be good enough...
No device that is already cut off from new updates is a good suggestion.

I just bought a mint condition SE2022 64GB with AppleCare+ until April 2024 ✌️🥳 . Red colour (exactly what I was looking for), not a single mark on it, kept in case with a screen protector for day one. The battery still shows 100% and I paid 60% of the cost of a new one from the store right now. I am happy and my niece is going to love the phone. Now I have to learn how to set up the Parental supervision on the phone.

On a side note, this little SE2022 is a performance sleeper. It has exactly the same chip as my 13 mini, but it has about 2.5 times less pixels to push on the display. The SE2022 is going to age better than my 13 mini, 2.5 times less, is a lot in terms of GPU power. I have never looked into the SE models so far, but a recent SE model can easily last 5 -7 years and not slow down significantly. This is the perfect phone for a kid or a teenager (if they don't destroy it) and a slightly larger model would be a very good phone for a senior (My parents don't like the gestures, they want the touch id button with a large screen).

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Mission completed.

The one you have money to fix the screen :)
Ha. That was exactly my thought too :) .
The SE2022 is decent, but with AppleCare+, the screen change deductible is $29 CAD ... not bad. I'll put it in a heavy duty case with a glass screen protector and the problem is solved for now. If my niece abuses it, no problem, she has ca$h in her piggy bank, she will have to finance the repair and also learn a little lesson about responsibilities and consequences 😁.

Yea, and not getting security updates…

Interesting. We haven't decided yet, but I was thinking of not getting my daughter a cell plan, and only providing her a data plan (ie. tablet plan). That way iMessage works (and if necessary WhatsApp messaging), as well as FaceTime. No SMS.
The reason for no data plan is because we don't want to encourage online media consumption, especially when not at home. iMessage won't work, but regular texting will and so will regular calls. Social media will be banned from the device for now and Whatsapp is on the fringe of that but will also be disabled since it is not necessary.

Doesn't her school have WiFi?

No phones are allowed in the class. Phones should be off and in the backpack. School policy, strictly enforced. It gets the job done.
At my kids' school, no phones are allowed in class, but phones are allowed outside of class at school for the older students. Does your niece's school also ban phones outside the classes while they're physically at the school?
