Need I say more? Anybody that thinks this is the optimum display option is a complete idiot, sorry.

Moving that screen 1 inch to the right will make that glare disappear. I can't believe people are purposly positioning their macbooks into direct sunlight, taking a pic and saying how crappy it is. This is a joke.

my .02

Mine is glossy and I love it. The glare has never bothered me and I think people are overstating how bad it is. I don't see why anyone would get a matted, unless there were into taking serious photos.

Because no matter which way I position my PowerBook G4 screen, there is no glare. The glossy screen limits from what angle you can comfortably view the display.

matte is better because things like this dont happen: (attached images)
For a second there, i thought that was a PC laptop. Then i thought it looks too good to be a PC laptop. Then i realised it was a MacBook

I quite like the glossy screen on my MacBook, but I think the Matte screen on the MacBook Pro does look better.
The reflection from the light on my desk is irritating me a bit. The light on my roof doesnt reflect back to me so its all good.
The colours are more vivid and brighter on glossy, but i think if there was a choice, i would go matte.

I like the magic game my MB glossy screen plays with the finger smudges that I tend to coat it with.

Screen on = they vanish
Screen off = they're visible
Screen on = gone again

Yes, I'm easily amused. :)

Have you seen the matte finish that the MacBook Pros have? It's not the same as your G4 PB. IMO (and other reviews have mentioned this too), the angle that the screen looks good at is much smaller.

My vote was for glossy. I absolutely love my 17" glossy, it r0x0rz t3h s0x0rz off of j0e b0x0rz. Yup.

Amen!

i was a big basher/hater of the glossys when they came out on the MB....

then my fiance begged for a blackbook so i caved and got her one...

i have to admit the glossys are brighter and have much less glare/reflection than pc glossys.... i even took it into my office one day with all over head flourescent lighting that is very bright.... with the brightness cranked on the blackbook the screen looks absolutely stunning with no reflection or glare whatsoever!

also when i look at my powerbook g4 matte screen outside it is very washed out and i can barely see it... the glossy MB screen looks fine outside....

im actually thinking about getting a MBP merom with a glossy when they are released.

i was even one of the guys who posted the pics of the blackbook booting with all the glare.... those pics really dont give the new screen justice... it is not as bad as everyone makes them out to be;)

This isn't even close; the glossy screens are SO much nicer. I like to say that this screen is 75% glossy/25% matte because it's definitely not like those super-glossy PC screens. I get no reflection and no glare, ever, and the color and contrast are so rich, so bright, so vibrant.

I really do wonder if those of you who knock the glossy screen have actually used a macbook/macbook pro that has one. Please don't go off of your PC experiences.

(and btw, I'm all too quick to criticize apple about the macbook. I think they have a number of QC and build issues that are just unacceptable. But this screen was a brilliant decision!)

It's nice to see the glossy screens getting such great reviews. I feel a lot of people were to quick to judge them, especially for not even experiencing them firsthand.

I'm at the Apple store in Oakbrook, IL about once a week so I see everything first hand. I did use one for about an hour at the store and I found it completely disgusting. I even asked the Apple Store employee "what do you think of it" and he shook his head and said no comment, to which I responded "I'm not going to buy this thing anyway so you might as well tell me" and he said "I don't know what they're thinking, I guess they're responding to demand - somebody out there must want it" - both he and I are graphic designers.

I thank god that I'm not a graphics designer and am glad that Apple made something that I think looks awesome. :)

Were you sitting down for the hour that you were using the MB, or were you standing up using the display that's at table level? Disgusting? Wow...

After seeing them I have to admit they don't look THAT bad, the reflection isn't really that bad. I still wouldn't buy one though it would just annoy me enough to make me want to bring it back but that's just me.

So, it's to be glare, huh? I can cope with glare.

In order to get better color rendition for photo work.

I don't get this 'no glare' stuff. There is tons of glare on my 17" matte screen, it's just that it's blurry instead of focused as it would be on a glossy screen. It still makes the screen harder to see whether it is matte or glossy.

Actually, one of the main reasons graphic designers don't like the glossy screen is because it throws off color accuracy big time. That's why back in the CRT days, there is/was (still maybe?) a big market for anti-glare coatings, devices, and "covers" for your display.

But you would know that already... for photo work.

But its far worse when it's glossy.

Believe me, glossy screens are the worst thing man ever designed. If only CRT TVs had matte screens then all the TVs at school would actually be viewable at mid-day...

B&O do glossy well though. Maybe it's because it's some special glass but I want to get a B&O TV in my room. Ahhh I love B&O...

I don't think so.

I honestly don't see how anybody cannot understand the glossy problem. True, a matte screen might have a tiny hint of glare (which I don't even know about but its possible) - now the glossy screen will enhance and highlight the glare, as if to say "Here it is! Here is the glare! It's right here! Can you see it?"

It's much brighter and better defined glare.

I can't tell a big difference, but a lot of people must agree with you, because when I went to get my MBP, the salesman said that I was the first to ask for a glossy screen and he would have to put in a special order for it.

Direct light on my matte MBP and PB screen didn't cause as much glare as it did wash the color out on the area of the screen that it was on.

Either way (glare from glossy or dull glare/fade from matte), I couldn't see a photo person working on those lighting conditions.

I despise any glare, so matte is really the only way to go.

If Apple ever decides to go with glossy as standard across all their notebooks I don't know what I'll do! They'd have to leave "matte" as a BTO option, I'd hope at least.

Working with images in photoshop on my friend's glossy screen is impossible for me. I understand that others may like it, but it drives me nuts all that glare!

Not ordered up my Macbook Pro yet (screen choice is partially holding me back), but if the glossy is anything like the x-black screen on my 17" Vaio then I will order glossy. The colours are fantastic and it is the first laptop I have been able to sit outside on a sunny day and still see everything perfectly. Never really had an issue with glare (if it is sideways on and the sun is shining directly on it then I have to angle it about 1/4" and then there is no issue, but I have the same problem on my matt LCD monitors).

Need to find a shop that sells macs near me and have a good look.
