I want the 24" - she thinks that the 20" will be more practical. I've been reduced to a pair of scissors, a piece of cardboard, and some tape. I've seen this thread go unanswered on other posts, so anyone who feels like helping me scrape together some testosterone, can you please send me the dimensions of the new 24" imac without the stand? I'm not looking for the viewable dimensions, but the dimensions of the imac as a whole without the stand. Thanks!

Apple's website has the dimensions WITH the stand - if I mock it up as a square using those dimensions I can kiss the 24" goodbye...

Go for the 20 iMac, with an external 20 inch ACD. :)

Who knows, maybe take her to a store that has them on display so she can see them first hand.

We did go to the store, but she needs to see it on the desk before she can make her decision. Those that are married will understand. I can't believe that there isn't a mac addict with a tape measure. If it helps, while I've always liked macs, this will be my first personal Mac - switching from a Dell and Windows XP.

Take a tape measure with you to the store. If I had a new 24 inch iMac I'd measure for you, but I have the last model 20 inch.

Um... I can't believe you didn't take a tape measure with you to the store! ;)

Do you plan not to use the stand? I think if you don't get a response from someone who has one and physically measured it, then just use Apple web site dimensions subtracting about 6" from the height.

It's 22 inches wide and 18 inches tall - the computer alone and not the stand. I didn't measure depth, but for a computer this skinny, if depth is a problem you might as well throw in the towel.

Also make sure that you take into account the factor of getting used to it. That sounds kinda strange but these 24"ers look huge for about 2 days after you get them then your mind adjusts and then everything else seems small.

Thanks! That's all I needed - can't believe it isn't out there...

Holy crap, I can't believe you need to get permission... If it is your computer then shouldn't you make the choice? (If it was about money I could understand, but this sounds like it is just about size)

Does she have to ask you for permission before she buys a purse? I bet she does have to cut out the dimensions of the purse in cardboard before she buys it.

Just tell her it is something that is important to you and that you want the 24".

I'm guessing her average purse might not cost ~$2K. Nor does he have to see it on the desk/ table everyday.

Besides, it's not like the OP said she'd flat out refuse, she wants to get a feel for it. And the OP is compromising. I fail to see the harm in that.

I take it you aren't married?;)

Just thinking what you thought would put the kibosh on the whole deal.

You must not be married. All she asked is that I mock it up first, which I did (thanks to the help of everyone from MacRumors) and she saw it and said sure. Now I have a willing partner on the 24" Mac - which means that I get to enjoy her AND the mac. If I just do it, every time she would have seen that lovely computer on my desk she would have cursed my name.

I'll get a pic on tonight - just so you can see my handiwork.

I wouldn't speak so fast... I can't believe how much they are charging for those bags these days...

Nope not married, but if I was I wouldn't ask permission to get something like an iMac (As long as money was not an issue. If we were tight on money that would be a completely different story)

I don't know you or your wife, but I am just saying I wouldn't submit to being that whipped.

I hope you used an old Gateway box for the mock-up. No WAIT - they'll be collectors items soon enough... :D

Your going to mockup an iMac out of cardboard. Haha, I just find that funny. Good luck man!

Let's get some pics of this thing too.

If you've been to the store and she can't tell by actually looking at the 24" iMac in person, what is the mock up really going to achieve? Except possibly seeing how many hoops you'll jump through to own a 24" iMac :D

I'd never become that whipped. You must be a complete pushover. Grow a sack.

Just kidding.. lol. When ya get married you can have it one of two ways, her way or death by 1000 guilt trips, nags, and worse of all, the subtle reminders of *insert whatever petty violation of her sensibilities/emotions* for the rest of time whenever she wants something you have issues with.

WOW!!!!

I can't believe it...this many replies and no "tell her bigger is better," "size matters," etc. jokes! I'm impressed!!

not married, so anything I then say onwards from that point about what I would do is totally irrelevant.

I'm in EXACTLY this position. I would like my missus to say sure the 24" is the one, but she will always ask if it's really necessary - which of course it's not. not in real world terms. but nonetheless, I do *need* the 24. So I'm gonna do this too!

Cheers guys, what a great idea!
