1) I prefered the white color
2) when I was buying my Macbook last December, I could get a BlackBook with a 120GB hard drive for $1499, or I could get a mid-range WhiteBook with an aftermarket 160GB hard drive for about $1450.

Tough call, really. Go with the better-speced computer with the color I prefer for less money, or pay more for a color that smudges more, doesn't blend in with other apple stuff, and has a smaller hard drive.

In the summer I'll be buying a fully loaded black MacBook, and, I'm actually glad that it costs a bit more, due to it being slightly more exclusive, than the white. I would prefer if it was about $300 extra to be honest. I know everyone will hate me for that, but it's my opinion. Sorry

I don't hate you for that. I already think it's ridiculous how much more black costs, so I'd never buy one. Increasing the price wouldn't hurt me a bit.

If you really want to show off your money you can always go pro... or wait for the ultraportable which is sure to cost more too.

Yuppie.

:p

Ok just kidding - but really...what's so *exclusive* about it? I think owning a Mac is exlusive. I don't understand why someone would want to pay more just to say they have the same thing I have, just in a different color. But if you ball like that here's an idea: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/pimp-your-macbook-if-you-dare-188992.php (now THAT is exclusive!)

It can't be coffee, it's gotta be Starschmucks, or whatever the heck that company's name is. It's a computer, not a status symbol. just my .02 :D

Agreed! Besides, if the guy wants it to be a status symbol, he's saying "I can't afford a Macbook Pro so I had to get this cheaper black Macbook."

I actually just bought a Black MacBook and it was cheaper and better then the white MacBooks. I got mine refurbished for $1189 Canadian, 2.0Ghz C2D, 120GB HD, 1GB RAM. The middle white MacBook has 160Mhz fast processor but starts at $1400.

So if you're willing to look, colour doesn't have to cost more.:D

***It arrives on Tuesday!!!!***

Key word == refurbished

...and a bigger HD. I swear when I purchased mine there was only $50 difference in the cost of a similarily configed white and black Macbook.

When they first came out and you did the BTO on the white to match specs on the black, it was like $50. Standard configs were more. :D

Perhaps 'the guy' would prefer a MacBook Pro if it wasn't so big, and would buy a 13.3" MacBook Pro/ultraportable in an instant. And you can tell a lot about a person by what computer they have, so I would say a laptop is a status symbol.

And I'm not saying that i don't like the white MacBook, I think it looks great, but i prefer the black one, and i like how it contrasts with both the bright white Apple on the lid and the screen.
And i prefer things that are more exclusive, for example, i like to know that there are only 351 other people in the world with the same watch as me, i like to know that I will probably never see anyone wearing the same trainers as me.
If you prefer the black, it is absolutely worth the extra money, you might be using this laptop almost every day for the next year or so, so you might as well pay a tiny bit more to get the colour you like, because you'll be seeing a lot of it.

If the base model Macbook came in black and was the same price, I would definitely have it gotten it over the white one, as I don't want to deal with the hassle of cleaning it. But there was no such option, and I didn't want to pay hundreds more for the upgrade I didn't need.

Hrmm...from what I understand, the black Mac has an issue with smudges and fingerprints. I don't have such an issue with my white one, as smudges and fingerprints don't stand out as much. :)

I'm not one to adopt the "gotta keep up with the Jones" attitude. Nor do I really care about owning a watch or pair of shoes that no one else has. I bought a black Macbook for the reason you mention in your last paragraph. I liked it. I didn't and don't care what others think about it. I'm the one that is going to use it, so I must be the one that likes it. Is it a status symbol? Certainly not. It's a tool that I use. Perhaps more is read into such things than should be. It just seems that a purchase (shoes, watch, computer, etc) should be based on your admiration for the product, not the fact that only a select few own it.

They do get smudges/fingerprints fairly easily. I have to take a slightly damp cloth and wipe mine down once a week or so. Also helps to wash your hands, especially after eating something like potato chips.

do blackbooks ever get cracks like the white macbooks? i don't think i've ever heard of that problem.
