I found another weird i hope bug did full restore from icloud backup and phone stopped restore because of overheating never seen that happening in any earlier iphone.
Restore continued after maybe half a minute.

Not sure if this is a new feature at restore but it did a full restore on both iphone and apple watch at the same time.
meaning downloading files and copying files to iphone and watch what it looked like anyway.

Anyway after restore everything works as it should

You will want to do the software update before you do the setup. I did a iPhone to iPhone transfer this time and it worked great, very fast. Everything copied over and everything was placed how it was on the ild phone. It even setup the eSim on my phone, which I thought was very convient. Once you do the software update, do a erase all contents and then transfer over your data form your old phone.

Yeah I did phone to phone last time - just didn’t remember if I updated software first, but must have.

Not sure what you mean about setting up the eSim - I just pulled my SIM from my 12 and put it in my 13 pro before turning it on so I’d have my phone number and stuff rolling (for the first time in a while I did the upgrade on a different number than my own because I still have my 12 and am giving it to my son).

Still curious if, after transferring my Apple ID stuff if I have to totally wipe the phone and start over to transfer my stuff, or if I can still restore from the backup of my 12, or transfer the rest of my stuff without starting over completely.

I purchased a sim free phone, it came without a sim. I decided to try using the eSim instead of a SIM card this time.

On new phone day then I usually set aside half a day to waste on downloading, configuring, authenticating and logging in. This year I did the direct restore and I was up and running fully authenticated within an hour. Best upgrade experience so far.

Always. There are always system code bugs that appear over time to cause annoying glitches, and those bugs get backed up in any system-wide backup file, which then get transferred to new devices. I always do a clean wipe, then just reload the apps I need; file data (docs, notes, photos, etc.) are backed up in the cloud anyway.

Okay y’all I’m at my friend’s updating my 12 to iOS 15 so I can set up my 13. I haven’t had anyone tell me yet if I can somehow transfer the rest of my stuff over from my 12 without restoring the 13 pro to original settings. All I did was transfer iCloud stuff so I could put in my sim and try the phone and camera, but now I’m not sure if I have to empty it and start over or what

Same here just for the heck of it and see how long it would take. It took me about one hour and 10 minutes to fully do a clean re-install. That includes all the updates to my passcode, face ID and junk like that. Wouldn’t want to do it all the time but one time a year it’s OK

So is this just setting up everything from scratch?

I let my phone transfer the Apple ID stuff but nothing else yet because I don’t have enough internet limit to do all that. I wonder if I should just reload apps at this point or start over or what.

Everything from scratch, nothing transferred over.

☝🏼This.

The Apple 'Geniuses' would tell you to back everything up using iCloud backups, do a full reset/restore wipe, then restore from a backup, and no amount of 'Sigh. 🙄 You don't think I've done that? No matter what, the glitches get transferred over. 🤦🏼' will convince them otherwise, which means: yes, full wipe, everything from scratch if you want a clean functioning system.

I'll be doing fresh setup because there are some bugs on my current iOS/phone. The most important info is backed up to iCloud so it'll be there anyway.

Also, someone mentioned earlier, setting up your phone kinda makes it feel like a bigger upgrade. You download your most used apps, skip the ones that you don't use, look for new ones, browse websites, login everywhere and you kinda test your new phone: new screen, speed, etc. You go through all settings, check what's new.

I did a total fresh install. Yeah, it took more time Fri. night, which is perfectly fine.
Honestly I did not want ANYTHING related from my 12 Pro Max on this 13 PM. (Sadly, I did not have a great experience w/ my 12. Battery especially)

Well, I did not do a fresh install. I transferred from my other phone. It took less than 20 minutes. I had to go to a friend’s to do it all because we have crap internet, and limited usage before it slows you down to 1996 dial-up speeds, so I just had to get it done.

But when you all do this, do you have to put in every contact from your phone and stuff like that? Cuz gosh if that’s the case, I will likely never do it. I’ll probably be carrying around iPhone 11 stuff with me when iPhone 27 comes out. ;-p

I always do for the mental placebo of "cleaning the cruft," but this will be the last year unless there is a material issue. All of Apple's devices have become so integrated and there are so many more settings in iOS that I still don't have it set up right. It messed up so many things from automations to Siri commands.

I started a fresh install then gave up and performed a transfer once my esim was not activated through Verizon properly. I was done messing with it.

Direct Transfer has gotten so good that I’ve not had any issues for the past couple of years when upgrading. If I were to have any issues I’d just do a Reset All Settings and that always seems to fix things.

All your contacts, notes, calendars, health data, reminders, mail, messages, safari passwords, bookmarks, home stuff will be there.

I have always restored from the old phone’s backup or directly transferred after iOS 11, I guess the oldest thing in my iPhone may come from the iPhone 3GS.. still working fine in my 13 Pro.

fresh install all the way - but this year I struggled with my WhatsApp backup (stored on iCloud Drive). It was saying that their is no backup on the cloud (which is ******** bc there is a 8gb file) Only way to go was unfortunately a restore from an iCloud backup..
