So I returned my 16 512 MBP for refund, due to a couple of issues (UK consumer law.)

Man, do I miss it!

However, I simply refuse to buy a replacement right now, as the new machines could arrive at any time (I’m guessing it will still be a few months, though.) Therefore, I’m using my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard until the new models launch.

I’m not a “pro” user, so my iPad with MKB is doing a suitable job for me. I’m actually liking the fact that I’m finally getting to us my MKB, as I never used it before. Much preferred to use my iPad as a tablet beforehand, thus just kept it in one of Apple’s folios.

Anyway, what about you … are you holding out for the new MBPs?

I am. I sold my m1 air when I got my new 12.9” m1 iPad and magic keyboard because I thought I wouldn’t miss having a laptop but I do. I am so tempted to grab another air until the new pros arrive but I hate buying something I already had and sold, and the pros surely can’t be too far away. I don’t know what to do :(

* Well I caved, picking up another m1 air this afternoon. Will sell it when the new pros are released.

I'm not too hot about buying the first generation of anything so I'll probably wait for the M2X machines at the earliest to give it a shot. May even end up holding out for the 3nm chips. My laptop still does its job, although my workflow has increased since I got it so it's struggling a bit at times, but nothing that warrants an urgent upgrade. Plus, there's no eGPU support for these machines so I'm hoping that by the time I get one of them, the graphics are good enough for me not to need it.

I’m waiting for either the 16” or the big iMac. My 2011 MBP has done well for nearly 10 years - it’ll be fine to keep it going for a few more months!

I’m definitely waiting on the new MBPs. More interested in the new 14” as I travel often (pre pandemic).

The fact that it will be an M1x variant and not M2 is a bummer but Apple did a tremendous job with the M1, so it’s more FOMO than real pain.

The new screen and form factor are a plus. My 5-year 2016 MBP is the driving force behind timing. It’s really on its last legs. I will keep it as a backup, home computer.

My current laptop is a 2013 13” MacBook Pro so it’s done well! It still gets used but mainly by my wife these days. I stick to my iMac Pro and my 2017 iPad Pro for day to day stuff. However, a few weeks ago I dropped the iPad Pro (idiot!) and the screen now has a crack in it. It’s not a terrible crack (I’m typing this post on the device) but it still got me thinking. Much as I like the iPad for surfing and reading, you can’t beat a laptop with a full desktop class OS to be productive. In my opinion. So I almost ALMOST pulled the trigger on an M1 MacBook Air.

But then I realised that the new MacBook Pros will be along soon so I’m waiting. I‘m slightly concerned about buying a first generation model. Let’s face it Apple have a poor track record with recent laptop designs (specifically keyboard) but I’m going to risk it. A 14” new MBP with mini LED, ports and magsafe (my 2013 MBP has magsafe and I’d miss it) is a tempting prospect and it might mean I can start to do some of my work away from the iMac Pro in my home office. Sit in the lounge or the garden for a change!

TBH I can probably live without my iPad Pro when the crack gets worse, or I’ll just get a cheap basic iPad for the odd times I want a tablet for reading a book.

My guess is October. Sounds a long way off, but it’ll be here soon enough.

My main laptop is a 2014 MacBook Pro 15 base model. My backup is a 2015 MacBook Pro 15 2.5 Ghz/AMD though I sometimes use my backup as a desktop. My 2014 is on loan to my son while he is waiting for a new laptop from his office - he's likely getting a 2019 16 MBP Intel. I bought the 2015 used and it's pretty banged up but it was really cheap. I skipped the butterfly and I skipped the 16 because of the reports here of thermal issues. I love the concept of the Air but I'd want a larger screen. I would be somewhat annoyed if I bought an M1X 16 and they came out with a 16 Air in March.

What need did you find unfulfilled with the existing M1 systems which you expect to next batch of systems to fulfill in a few months?

One could argue that the first batch of M1 system releases were a new(ish) chip/SOC in an established existing chassis, and the next round will be another new(ish) SOC now in a new chassis... :D

I'd guess that there are a lot of people with Retinas waiting for the M1X.

One of the reasons I bought the M1 MacBook Air on day one was to avoid this dilemma. I’ve used it everyday for 9 months. When Apple releases the next gen MacBooks I’ll feel that I’ve gotten my money’s worth with the M1 MBA already. I can upgrade or not based on the enhancements while selling this Air.

I‘d like to replace my 2016 MBP. They keyboard often sticks, it has a crappy CPU and I really want to find out what the M1 hype is all about.
Since I use a lot of docker containers I didn‘t want to get one with 16 GB even if it would handle my workflows well (by swapping a lot). Rather avoid that if I can.

Waiting, but patiently. Would still be using my 2012 13” if it had had 16GB; needed the extra RAM so bought a stopgap 2019 MBA (with similar performance profile to the 2012 MBP ?) 18 mo ago, knowing there were rumors of a platform switch.

Hoping the 2022 14” model (so second gen, and hopefully 32GB) will be the next computer to last me 6-8 years.

I tend to keep my computers a long time. I want a minimum of 16 gigs RAM and multiple ports, so I'm waiting to see what they offer.

I wish I could get a refund. I bought 16inch on release date in the UK and would prefer an M1

I'm on the fence. I still love the larger display, the better speakers, and the GPU performance is generally better with the 5500/5600M options, and the i7 and i9 still perform quite well. Mostly I want something quieter and with better battery life. I could probably be OK with M1. I don't game as much as I used to, but I'm not sure about going back to a 13" display.

Can’t wait to ditch my 2016 mbp. While it’s been a good workhorse, the M chips have me salivating.

Also the battery drain has gotten unbearable.

Yes one could, hence me mentioning the M2X or 3nm chips which would be the second or third versions of both the chips and chassis. Doesn't mean they won't come with their issues. Doesn't mean this generation will have any issues even, it's been great so far apparently. But if I can afford it, I'd rather give engineers time to refine their work when it comes to technology.

The 2012 was trivially easy to upgrade - if memory was the problem was there any reason you didn’t just put a couple of 8GB RAM sticks into it? A lot cheaper than a new MBA!
