You mean like going out and buying Windows XP from Microsoft

At some point software companies drop software from their offerings and Apple (at times) chooses a fairly aggressive time line, but they're not alone.

People have alternatives, such as buying it on eBay.
Comparing Mavericks to Windows XP?? Windows XP was released in 2001, fifteen years ago. Mavericks was released less than three years ago. Hardly comparable.

That said, you can still buy Windows XP, arguably from more places than Mavericks.

Apple has that,... its local recovery.... every mac sold can only be installed the current OS that came with that Mac, u cannot install an older version because hardware support doesn't exist in older OS's

and local recovery in any case is bootable, and is updated with any OS X upgrades too.

Yes but that isn't going to help if the drive is faulty...

External install media is safer option.

I have never been able to upgrade OS X from recovery without it stalling, corrupting the data on the main partition, and installing OS X Lion's version of Recovery. And that's now the case with both a 2010 MacBook Pro that didn't even ship with Lion, and my 2011. And it's every time - Upgrade to Mavericks? Here's Lion instead! Upgrade to Yosemite? How about Lion? El Capitan? Why not Lion?

And it's even my least favorite version of OS X, which doesn't help things!

I manage a USB drive with a reinstaller for both Yosemite and El Capitan, but it shouldn't be that way, especially when you have to deal with certificates expiring and having to waste the time re-downloading them and writing them to the disk again.

Are you me? I've spent the last two days doing this.

Yeah, I know the recovery is updated with software updates. I've probably reinstalled the current version of an OS X cycle twice in the last ten years though, so I couldn't tell you the reliability of those in comparison.

If Apple doesn't want to provide updates or support for older system software, that's reasonable. However, it can't be that big of a workload to just have the older versions available for download. Hardware does get fouled up at times, even theirs.
