These iMacs are kinda worthless. May as well get a mini and a better monitor. 629 for mini.
You won’t find a better external monitor, maybe the LG 5K but that costs nearly as much as the iMac. There are simply no external monitors at this pixel density, with this colour accuracy and brightness, except for the LG 5K.

Once you factor in a keyboard, mouse, monitor, webcam, speakers the price will be similar to the iMac.

An M1 desktop config has been available since day 1, the M1 mini.
I meant it in the sense of an AIO, sorry that I was unclear.

Having two machines is a great way to ensure you can survive one of them failing.
I've done that before - mini + laptop.

Even using my NAS to sync the two, it tended to be a bit of a pain at times. I prefer just docking my single MBP. System failure has been incredibly rare over the past couple decades of laptop ownership, and I maintain a proper backup/DR strategy for my files.

The 13" MBP is also split into two tiers of fewer-ports M1 / more-ports Intel.

What is strange about the mini is it is now the value system. It is cheaper than an identically configured M1 iMac. This is not true of the Intel Mini. The 27" iMac is cheaper and faster than an Intel Mac mini with a 27" 5k display and an eGPU.
Yes, I mentioned the MBP two vs four port tiers above.

Prior to M1, the mini was essentially one tier. With Apple Silicon they split it, giving a lower-tier mini -- presumably with a higher tier version yet to come.

Same situation here... I’ve been using a MBP 13 most of my life for both work and personal, working over OneDrive and 90% apps from Mac App Store. Never had an iMac or even 2 computers at the same time. Last year updated to MBP M1 13 and I’m super happy with this machine. I used to go with it everyday from home to Office and back, always with me, working at both places.

Since pandemic I’ve been working from home the whole year and I’m sure there’s still more of it -and when all of is over working from home will be still there. what’s more, due to home office I spend so many hours - more than ever- in front of my MBP (12 h). I even moved to a new house with an extra room to build a proper office.

So now my dilemma is getting the new iMac for my awesome new office and just leave the M1 MBP for those rare days I have to go to the office for some hours or a special meeting -even thinking about leaving it there and not carrying it around anymore. Moreover at home I work with Ethernet so my MBP is actually acting as a desktop.

Bigger screen is gonna be weird for me but I’m sure I’ll love it (and my eyes and back to). Green and 16Mb would be my election... looks pretty cool:

I have a M1 MacBook Pro and will certainly be getting an apple silicon iMac to replace by 2015 27”.

I was undecided whether to go for the 24” or wait for the larger models, but am becoming more sure by the day that I will pull the trigger on Friday.

I need a desktop as one of its purposes is to hold my music and video library for home sharing, so plugging in my MacBook to a monitor doesn’t work. I probably should wait and see what the options are later in the year, but as I want a 2tb model (to get often used items off external spinning drives) I know that whatever they release will be more than I really want to spend. The 24” is gonna be £2,500 as it is. I suspect that the screen on the larger models may be bigger than I really need as well (27” is pretty well perfect for my use, but I think I’d rather go a bit smaller than larger).

It does seem odd getting a desktop with such similar specs to my laptop (I’ll go 16gb rather than the 8 in my laptop, but other than that and the ssd they will have the same specs), but then my MacBook runs rings around my current iMac and I don’t have heavy use, mainly office stuff with some basic picture/video editing.

Writing that, I’m not really sure why I’m still thinking about it. I’ll be surprised if I don’t order one on Friday, I don’t really see the downside (really not bothered what it looks like anyway, so colour, bezels, chin arguments are irrelevant).

Not buying one. I already have windows/linux desktop with 64 GB, 5 TB SSD, RTX 2070 GPU, 9900K CPU, MacBook Air M1, and IPP Pro. I don't see any of these I would replace with the M1 Imac.

What color are you thinking about?

I assume you are on a wind up. :)

Anyway, I'll probably ask my wife if she has a preference, or grab the silver for less risk on resale value.

I probably wouldn't be able to remember what colour it is anyway (I honestly don't remember what colour carpets, walls, doors etc are, and I have no idea what a "pastel colour" is). It really isn't important to me.

I like the new design and the return of colors to the iMac. I do wish that instead of matching peripherals, it were possible to order contrasting colors instead, just to mix things up. Perhaps the next gen MBA, or just plain MB will come in colors as well.

Alas, I currently have an external display, KB, and trackpad setup and it's easy to swap between work and personal laptops. But if I wanted to simplify, one of these, perhaps on a VESA arm to swing it out of the way when not in use, would be a nice setup. Simple, neat, clean, and a little fun.

I feel like my LG Ultrafine 4k 24" looks a lot like the new Imac - but powers my M1 Macbook pro and provides a hub. I love this one-plug two screen setup and wouldn't want an Imac - not as flexible.

I decided to stick with only a MacBook Pro from now on. It just is much more convenient for me to be able to carry my desktop machine with me at any time. Also, having just one machine makes life easier at least for me. I might switch to a 16-inch MBP once that comes out.

I think that is a sensible idea.

Personally, I like to be able to sit at a desk and use a bigger screen. I would probably just plug my MacBook into a monitor if it wasn't for the fact that we also use the desktop as a media server.

One of these days, I expect to be able to take my iPhone, plug it into a hub with KVM and run macOS. Yes, it would take a lot to do that but I can dream.

Super happy with my base M1 MacBook Air.
The M1 is super impressive which has convinced me to replace my loyal 2011 21.5 iMac (treated with 24 GB RAM and an added 750 GB SSD to create a fusion drive with the standard 500 GB HDD).

I use both machines for standard stuff and programming, light video editing and maintaining my iCloud Photo Library. All documents are kept in iCloud Drive.
The iMac serves as a hub for home sharing (music, photos and home videos).

A maxed out M1 iMac is what I will be ordering. Yellow looks great but my wife is not (yet) convinced and wants to see it in person. So no pre ordering for me…
