You spent more than US $2000 on a new computer, it has a defect, and you're not going to return it for an exchange?

No wonder western civilization is going down the drain... :D

I'm not even convinced there is a yellow tinge. I'm perfectly happy with my Mac. My 24" developed a shadowing thing on the screen after almost a year, the genius bar replaced the screen for me without question. I have no doubt that IF my Mac has a problem, then I'll be able to get the screen replaced at a later date.

Right now I have a quiet hard drive, no dead pixels, no chips or marks, no flicker or black outs, and a very very very very very very very subtle change in colour at the bottom of the screen that's so subtle I'm not sure it's there. So no, I'm not planning on returning my computer. If it turns into something obviously wrong then I'll get the screen replaced. Otherwise, I'm going to stop looking for problems that probably aren't there.

Apple most likely purchased the screens all in one "batch" so the possibility of "bad batches" seems unlikely to me. I feel LG made these solely for Apple, as info regarding these screens doesn't even exist, even with a model # search. I also doubt Apple cared enough about the issue to scrap the first order and demand a second revision out of LG. ($$$)

Thus, I feel that anyone claiming a perfect screen needs to find someone in person who can tell the difference and have them look, too. Otherwise I will consider it a false negative until otherwise proven (pics, video?). Now, in the OP's case, "another guy in our college" means that you have SEEN the yellowing yourself or is it just by word of mouth? If it's the former then I'll ask you to look REALLY hard at yours again, or have him look for you. If it's the latter, then I can't trust that yours is actually fine at all.

Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I find it more likely that they all exhibit this issue (to some extent), than 90% DO, and 10% magically DO NOT... I feel that maybe the "DO NOT" are just false negatives.

Despite my cynicism, I'm keeping this for now, and will ask for a screen replacement when I finally see a 27" with my own eyes that does NOT exhibit the yellowing. I haven't yet, and I don't know if I will until Apple orders a new batch. I lucked out in every other regard, no DOA, no messed up power button, no cracks, no dust, no dead pixels, no flickering, no excessive HDD noise... and all of these issues are far less acceptable to me than a slight yellow hue, so I'm not going to be stupid and gamble for a replacement.

i saw it. in fact he didn't notice, i only noticed it after seeing in these forums but mine doesn't have it

My new i5 27" arrived yesterday at night, went late to sleep installing all my stuff and I didnt know anything related a yellow screen until now at this forum, later at home will look for the yellow band but I am almost sure mine its perfect.

by the way... how do you know the week it was made?

If it's there it's not noticeable

i5, week 46. No yellow tinge that I can see....but I'll keep my eye on it - and would probably take it to Genius Bar if/when I notice anything!

I believe the week is in the serial number...that's where I took mine from.

by the way... how do you know the week it was made?

click the "apple" on the left of menu bar,
click "about this mac"
click the greyed out version number below "Mac OS X" twice,
then you will get the serial number of your imac which looks like W89??......

the ?? there is the week your imac built.

i7 iMac, arrived earlier than scheduled and without any problems.

Serial Number W89474Y.....

...the ?? there is the week your imac built.

Week 45 then...

I did the grey test searching the yellow band and I cant find it (yeah!)...but...

There is a dark spot (like dirt in a digital camera sensor) that changes from dark to bright when you change the place you look at it...small but is there...so its not perfect, but I really love my i5, that big screen is awsome. :D

Reading the handprint thread I now realize that the spot might be a finger print inside the glass...I read you can easily take the glass off and clean it but I wont do it, wont risk the glass for such a small spot.

everything above that is a perfect i5 and I´m glad I buyed it!

Sorry but this made me giggle a bit. There are some serious generalizations and 'opinion' going on in your rant / post.

Phrases like "Apple most likely purchased...", "I feel LG made these solely for Apple..." and "I also doubt Apple cared enough..." leaves me not wanting to trust or listen to anything you say.

I took delivery of a new 27" i7 yesterday and was disappointed to discover the warming tone at the bottom of my screen. Agreed, it isn’t going to be a major issue for most 'normal' users but this is irrelevant. The facts of the matter are; this is a fault! Fact! When you pay £1800+ for a new computer you don’t want to have to settle for faulty goods.

Further to this, the yellow tinge issue would definitely pose more technical problems for me; a CGI artist producing images and animations for games developers and car manufactures.

There is absolutely no way that this yellow tinge is supposed to exist or that we are expected to live with it!!

Also, I have noticed people talking about being without a machine whilst they wait for a replacement? Apple will arrange a replacement to be delivered to you ASAP and then arrange collection of the faulty machine at a convenient time for you. There is no “risk” about it

I am certainly not trying to cause waves here but I think that calling people “stupid” for not putting up with faulty goods is a bit much!

If you’re happy with your £1800+ computer with a faulty screen that’s great..

Signed,

A slightly disappointed Apple customer :(

Funny you call my post a rant and then continue to do the same. Whereas I am happy with my purchase and was doing no ranting. I am however skeptical that there are ANY iMacs without this problem, so I was pointing out that a thread like this is useless without images and/or video of these "perfect" iMacs in action.

As for my "generalizations"... Do you think Apple orders one screen at a time? You're stupid then. Do you think they would scrap an entire order because of some yellowing, only to lose tens of thousands of dollars to replace another order? You're stupid then. Have you seen a 27" 2560 x 1440 screen in any other product other than the iMac? NO, therefore it can probably be said that LG made these specifically for Apple. Please prove to me otherwise.

For anyone else who may be interested to know; I have arranged to have a replacement sent for my 27” iMac which I can expect to arrive early next week. Apple have also agreed to allow me to hold onto the current one until the new one has arrived and I am happy that it is fault free!

I will certainly report back once the new one arrives and let you guys know if it has the same issue or is indeed fine...

Also, if it may prove useful, I could potentially turn both machines on side by side and take a few photographs (if the new machine is fault free).

Many Thanks
