This is a lot of people. I empathize with them because I am that way sometimes. From my experience there are different perspectives and a lot of it is due to people not wanting to embrace change.
Yeah, right now there’s not a whole lot of choice in the EV market compared to ice vehicles. I think there is crossover to the most common cars, such as Honda Accord, Toyota, Camry, etc.. There’s a few super high-end electric vehicles for people with more money than they know what to do with. I’m not sure if there’s anything comparable to a mid priced luxury vehicle like the Audi A6. Give it time. Some of it though is the cost. Like for like carries quite a premium with EV’s when it comes to brand and luxury. So many people drive ICE BMW’s, Mercedes, Audi’s etc and the EV equivalents are rather expensive. My Dad isn’t going to trade his 2021 Audi A6 for a similarly priced Tesla Model Y for example as it would feel like a significant downgrade.
I don’t think that’s going to be the solution. The problem is people are used to driving around with enough fuel for weeks and then driving somewhere to replenish it. With an EV people need to get in the mindset of your car has a full tank every morning. You don’t need 600 miles of fuel to last two weeks because tomorrow morning, you’re going to start off with a full tank. Carrying a ridiculous amount of batteries to get 600 mile range would reduce efficiency. There is also the assumptions all your charging needs to be down publicly which is only really the case for 35% of our population. EV’s will only really convince the mass market once they achieve 600+ mile ranges and can be charged quickly and conveniently for those who can’t have home chargers. Most towns and villages still aren’t equipped for that yet.
Eventually every place you go will have charge points to plug in. It doesn’t need to be super fast because when you stop at the grocery store for 30 minutes, you’ll get 30 miles of power (numbers for example, not accurate). When you’re at work for eight hours your battery will be completely full at the end of the day.
The only time you really need fast charging is if you’re on a road trip.
