From my experience there are different perspectives and a lot of it is due to people not wanting to embrace change.
This is a lot of people. I empathize with them because I am that way sometimes.

Some of it though is the cost. Like for like carries quite a premium with EV’s when it comes to brand and luxury. So many people drive ICE BMW’s, Mercedes, Audi’s etc and the EV equivalents are rather expensive. My Dad isn’t going to trade his 2021 Audi A6 for a similarly priced Tesla Model Y for example as it would feel like a significant downgrade.
Yeah, right now there’s not a whole lot of choice in the EV market compared to ice vehicles. I think there is crossover to the most common cars, such as Honda Accord, Toyota, Camry, etc.. There’s a few super high-end electric vehicles for people with more money than they know what to do with. I’m not sure if there’s anything comparable to a mid priced luxury vehicle like the Audi A6. Give it time.

There is also the assumptions all your charging needs to be down publicly which is only really the case for 35% of our population. EV’s will only really convince the mass market once they achieve 600+ mile ranges and can be charged quickly and conveniently for those who can’t have home chargers. Most towns and villages still aren’t equipped for that yet.
I don’t think that’s going to be the solution. The problem is people are used to driving around with enough fuel for weeks and then driving somewhere to replenish it. With an EV people need to get in the mindset of your car has a full tank every morning. You don’t need 600 miles of fuel to last two weeks because tomorrow morning, you’re going to start off with a full tank. Carrying a ridiculous amount of batteries to get 600 mile range would reduce efficiency.

Eventually every place you go will have charge points to plug in. It doesn’t need to be super fast because when you stop at the grocery store for 30 minutes, you’ll get 30 miles of power (numbers for example, not accurate). When you’re at work for eight hours your battery will be completely full at the end of the day.

The only time you really need fast charging is if you’re on a road trip.

My point was about people who are unable to charge at home and in my town alone that’s probably about 4k homes. Those sorts of people who fill up with fuel when passing the petrol stations aren’t going to want to drive to a tiny car park behind a pub in town to the 6 chargers we have there, to then leave their cars there for an hour or two to charge. This is a major hurdle in convincing people to go electric, apart from the affordability and limited choice. I can understand these concerns. Fast charging is needed on road trips and in public places where someone needs to charge quickly when they are unable at home. At the moment my town has 6 to 10 public chargers, none are particularly fast. To service parts of the town, we probably need 100 of these chargers and I have no idea where the money would come from to pay for it. There does seem to be a bit of a halt on this sort of investment here at the moment too as the councils can barely afford to collect our rubbish, let alone service the select few who are lucky enough to be trying out EV’s.

So a rather UK non Tesla owner specific question. Do you plan your long trips? I always have and select charging stations based on location, number of chargers etc.
But I’m starting to wonder if I need to bother? So many service stations have them on the motorways it seems like I should just pull in with plenty of spare power so I can make another one if needed.
Thoughts?

Does your i3 OS do route planning including displaying the number of available chargers “x/y free chargers”?

Tesla‘s OS will route you planning which chargers it suggest you use, and for about how long you should stop at each. The route planning doesn’t try to have you to fully charge, it optimizes your stop/charge time, with just enough to get you to the next charger. It plans which chargers you should use based on how busy chargers are.

I am not sure if Tesla is aware of the number of unoccupied non-Tesla chargers. So, route planning will likely take planning if you want to use non-Tesla chargers.

A slight digression…one YouTube video I saw rumors a Sirius xm app is coming to the TM3 and TMY. While I have access to more music than I could ever listen to, the subscription cost is gonna be interesting.

Currently have a Sirius xm satellite subscription for one car and I subscribe to the app on my phone. I’m guessing if there is such a thing it’s going to be more than the app.

Tesla’s streaming services between the native Tesla service and tune in are pretty good. On top of that I have Apple Music and Amazon music.

No it doesn’t. I’ve always used an app called Zapmap to plan my routes before setting off. They have a premium service you can pay for but I don’t use charging on the road more than a few times each year.
I’m aware of what Tesla does, hence the question was for non Tesla owners.

It’s just that chargers in the UK seem so numerous now that I don’t know it’s even necessary to plan your route anymore. Compared to when I started my EV journey a couple of years ago things have improved massively.

RE: route planning, some thoughts for here in the Eastern colonies:

1- 2012 Nissan LEAF. No route planning needed, car was for local errands only given ridiculously short range of the 24kWh battery.
2- 2018 Tesla Model 3. Rigorous route planning needed in 2018, none today given the density of Superchargers. For me, it is just get in and drive.
3- 2023 Hyundai Ioniq5. No route planning needed but for the wrong reasons. Since I have significant CCS charging deserts on any route out of my home for any long trip (>225 miles in one direction), we just take the Tesla. Hopefully this situation improves as the Hyundai is a MUCH better road trip vehicle for us but the charging sitch negates its use.
4- Rental ICE when needed. No route planning needed.

Do people in the UK us ABRP (A Better Routeplanner). Non-Tesla owners (and Tesla owners planning trips using L3/L4 non-Tesla chargers) love it.

I would think it still would be helpful to plan, so you know the number of available chargers, close alternatives if they are occupied on arrival, and for price optimization.

I have 2 lifetime subscriptions to SXM. Both come with streaming accounts for life. After a lawsuit during the pandemic, lifetime accounts are no longer limited in the number of radio transfers. It’s now $35 per transfer from now on. I haven’t paid for SXM since 2010.

I have added SXM via satellite to my TMY (you swap a radio module from your TM3/Y to one from a TMS/X). I exclusively use SXM in my TMY. The swap on a TM3 is slightly more involved, but easily doable.

If SXM does in fact come to Tesla OS, from the rumors it seems it will use a combo of Satellite and Streaming. So if you have a TMS/X with SXM (or swapped radio in a TM3/Y) it seems it would still work, and you use streaming for the streaming only channels. I assume if you don’t have a radio module it would use streaming exclusively (hopefully getting all channels).

Since it is just another streaming device, I assume you would sign in with your streaming account and not have to pay any additional cost (other than if you have to pay for streaming). SXM has never limited the type of streaming devices before (I have it signed in on all my TVs, Alexa devices, phones, iPads, computers).

I agree the infrastructure for people living in apartments or houses that are multifamily dwellings is not good. In bigger cities like New York people live in what they call houses but it’s really a building and you have a slice of it. In less condensed areas in the USA people have separate structures for houses with a garage or driveway adjacent to the house. This makes home charging very easy. I’m not sure if it’s like this in other countries.

As to who is going to pay well, the answer is the the same people that pay for gas pumps everywhere. If you’re waiting for the government to build charging stations or even if they attempt to do something like this, it’s going to be a disaster. This has to be private like gas stations where they want to build them because they’re selling electricity just like gas stations are selling gas.

I’m not sure how I feel about the Sirius radio streaming thing. The reason I would want Sirius is because it’s satellite. Even now there are cellular dead zones in the USA and that’s where satellite radio shines

I agree with the comment about dead zones, however something is better than nothing. TM3 and TMY do not have the hardware and cell service is the only way to go. I know there are ways to put satellite hardware in a car, but I don't want to go back to 2 satellite subscriptions. My next EV will have the hardware. But for now having the app on the screen would be better than nothing.

It’ll be a long time before fuel companies sell off forecourts to be converted into EV charging stations I think. That will come once the majority of motorists go to EV’s, not before and there is the problem. Most of the current public charging facilities are on council owned land and that won’t be sold off to private companies anytime soon. I certainly don’t want my council tax to be used on public chargers as that will direct money away from services that are seriously lacking as it is.

Right now I think the infrastructure is fine for those of us that have EV’s. We aren’t going to see all motorists go electric through in the next 20 years I highly doubt. It’s not a technology that suits everyone and is the reason other types need to be accommodated too.

The rumors I have seen indicate it is for all (So far I’m not aware of any Tesla 3rd party apps specifically for 3/Y vs S/X so it would be a first if they did) and it incorporates both satellite and streaming.

There are a lot of channels that are streaming only (since they bought Pandora) that are likely to become available.

I am hoping the rumors I have seen, are true. I would like a combination of both.

They haven't put a lot of effort into updating the current satellite app. The channel tiles aren’t up to date, the scrolling between favorites doesn’t work (it channels up or down not through favorites). Since I added SXM to my TMY, they did fix a lot of the channel numbers that were off.

Let's remove the S/X from this because these models have the necessary hardware.

Now we know there are multiple applications: netflix, youtube, apple music, amazon music etc. I would think an SXM internet app, would be crafted in the same vein as these other apps. Whether this new SXM app is written by Tesla or Sirius XM under contract to Tesla remains to be seen, but I think the same pattern as the other apps will be followed. And whether a premium subscription would be required. So I don't know if it's correct to call this a 3rd party app, yet. The current SXM app for your mobile device is inexpensive compared the satellite subscription. However, the question is if an SXM internet app for a TM3 or TMY will be the same price, remains to be seen.

Would be great if this happens and if the app is good to great and Sirius XM charges a nominal price would be a best seller, imo. But companies being companies, I'm not holding my breath.

1. I think they all have Apple CarPlay except Tesla.
2. So given how hybrids are the most likely to catch fire, followed by ICE vehicle then the safest are EV’s I assume you will never use any car?
3. Not ever likely to happen. An EV that is the same Spec as an ICE car would never be cheaper to buy. But when you factor in the lower running costs they can be cheaper to run/own.

What does “same spec” mean? A dual motor TM3 with performance boost can get to 60 in about 3.6 seconds. How much does one have to spend on an ice car to get that performance?

If you are talking size/interior space, obviously you can get an ICE car that is less expensive than a dual motor TM3 but maybe not by much.(Including tax credits)

If you are discussing luxury and bells and whistles that is very subjective.

Bottom line I think it’s difficult to figure out parity between ICE and EV In todays market.

I mean like a car that comes in both an ICE variant and a EV variant.
For example you can buy a mini as both an EV or petrol.
Nothing to do with Tesla as obviously that wouldn’t apply as they only make BEV’s.

Cross shopping is difficult. At least for me I don’t cross shop an bmw 5 series with a bmw i5 m60. I might look at cars in the 5 series class other German makes, some of the luxury American makes and that may include electric vehicles.

And while the bev equalities to ice may be more expensive. Comparing a BM3 m badge to TM3P the TM3P is less expensive by thousands for maybe the same or better performance.

I see them building one app for all, like all the other apps (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Music, Apple Music, …). This would be across all Teslas. They would eventually stop including SXM radio modules and antennas in the TMS/X for a cost savings. But in the meantime, it would incorporate both satellite and streaming.

SXM does not charge based on streaming device, they haven’t for all the years I have had them (going back to early 2000’s both Sirius and XM). They only have charged to stream, and early on additional if you want Howard or O&A. You pay for streaming itself. In my case, or others with lifetime accounts, we have streaming free per lifetime account. The catch is you can only actively stream on one device at a time per sign in. I my case with 2 lifetime accounts I have 2 separate streaming accounts.

This is what I assume. But I see no reason SXM will charge any more for Tesla streaming vs any other stream (phone/computer/echo/tv brands/…). It would be the first time ever…

There are posts in TMC in the TMY retrofit thread (where I posted) where the theories are being discussed.

Here is a picture of my 2021 TMY with SXM running.

The problem with that is, you are limiting yourself to ICE cars that have been modified to work as an EV. A proper electric vehicle has been designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle and does not have an ICE counterpart. Some manufacturers reuse names, but it’s not the same vehicle. A good example is the Ford Mustang versus Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Right now, the electric vehicle market is a bit sparse in the USA. We are in an early transition phase. Unless something changes drastically, I’d say it’s going to be at least ten years before there is progress.. I’m only speaking of the USA because that’s where I live and know about. I know other countries are way ahead of us when it comes to this. If you live in another country, your situation might be different.

The reason someone should buy an electric vehicle isn’t because it’s cheaper. you can buy a used Toyota Corolla and it’ll last forever with some very basic maintenance. The reason you buy an electric vehicle is because it’s better. <—- this paragraph is only my opinion and not a “fact”. I know someone’s going to disagree.

Here are the things I feel that made my EV purchase worth it. These may not be relevant to you. Everyone has different wants and needs.

Not having to deal with engine noise. No more jerky and weak acceleration. No more getting into a hot car after work. No more stopping to get gas ever! Not having to worry about maintenance other than tire rotations and washer fluid. I could come up with some lesser reasons, but I feel it would be nitpicky at that point. These reasons alone make it more than worth it for me.

The S and X are premium cars and I don’t see Tesla removing the hardware as it’s more reliable than cell service even the expense of bandwidth. And whether or not this rumored sxm app will be installable on the S and X is of course part of this hypothetical discussion.

In my case, or others with lifetime accounts, we have streaming free per lifetime account. The catch is you can only actively stream on one device at a time per sign in. I my case with 2 lifetime accounts I have 2 separate streaming accounts.
You’re right you pay for a streaming license, I have two.
This is what I assume. But I see no reason SXM will charge any more for Tesla streaming vs any other stream (phone/computer/echo/tv brands/…). It would be the first time ever…
Right. Theoretically it should hook up to your account.
There are posts in TMC in the TMY retrofit thread (where I posted) where the theories are being discussed.
Yep. We will see.

I think most car manufacturers these days are building cars designed to accept either an EV or ICE drive train.

I agree with your reasons for buying an EV. I would add
Better for the environment
Cheaper to drive
No issues with clean air zones (that might be UK specific).
