Can I ask - do you use iCloud storage? What will your main use Case be? Any content creation?

I use a little iCloud, a TON of Google, and a LOT of MS 365. I do Google Classroom, OneNote, presentations on both platforms. I use my iPad mostly for content creation. (I'm dying for Google to do an iOS app for Sites.)

Cool , so it sounds like you heavily rely on the cloud.
That’s pretty much where I am. Hmm..

On my phone, I realized the majority of what I had was photos. Same thing. Even 64GB will cover a "metric crap ton" of photos. 64GB is plenty.

My son, OTOH, maxes out because he keeps a lot of music on his phone. He has a long commute between Brooklyn and the city to work. If it were me, I'd be using iBooks, and still not needing the space.

I think 64 is the new 16. Even with cloud storage, it should be dropped. Apps are taking up more and more space. And people aren’t always connected to the cloud. Not saying people can’t get by with 64. They can & do. I just see it as being too restrictive on an iPad Pro even for a casual user. And I was surprised Apple used it as their base on the new pros.

But then, I travel a lot and I like to edit photos & videos, so perhaps I am biased for more space. Still, I think it’s only a matter of time before 128 is the new 64.

Having said that, I probably would have gone with 512 if it weren’t for the fact that only the 1 TB models are getting 6 gigs of ram. Or so it seems. Still waiting on official confirmation before I order mine. But it looks like I’m gonna be paying up for the ram. Doh!

Unlike my iPhones, I tend to keep my iPads for a long time before upgrading. So I want to future proof this iPad Pro purchase as much as I can. Gonna hurt my wallet in the short term, but sometimes you gotta bite the bullet, and I know this purchase will pay for itself within the first year, so I don’t mind.

Be interesting to see if external drives are actually an option now that the iPad has usb-c

Cloud storage costs money for storage, and data plan costs to transfer, and time to download that data. One doesn’t replace the other.
Not until Apple allows file system access. That's the sticking point. Theoretically, even older iPads can read USB mass storage with the USB camera adapter. However, software only allows access to Photos.

Also, given DRM and piracy concerns, will apps like comiXology even allow storing downloaded content to external USB storage?

Doesn’t need access to the file system per se, just an external storage provider in the files app.

So, pardon this question, but can anyone tell me what sort of proven benefits we've seen to having the 6GB of RAM compared to 4GB on an iPad? Before anyone starts in with the ridiculous responses about how RAM works, I already know that part. The iPad isn't exactly a multi-tasking powerhouse like a Mac or PC where you have 8-10 programs open and running simultaneously. And yes, sure, you can get photoshop files and movie projects that are significantly larger than 4GB, but typically if they are larger than 4GB, there is a pretty good chance it's larger than 6GB too, in which case you are still swapping to flash memory. But, with the speed of flash memory, is this a huge deal? I mean, I see lots of wringing or hands and gnashing of teeth on the forum here...but in day to day use, for 99% of people, is this 2GB of RAM going to make a huge difference? And before you say "YES OF COURSE YOU IDIOT" I'd challenge you to provide some iPad Pro 2018 benchmarks to prove it...

True. As of now though, they haven't added it to iOS yet.

Mind, I tend to use tablets in a more mobile way (while standing, walking around, etc) so having HDD hanging off of it isn't always a possibility. Still, would be nice being able to carry a 4TB HDD to copy content to/from directly with the iPad instead of needing a laptop as go-between.

That's a good point too. I resell every year so definitely something to think about. I really don't expect any used iPad to sell for more than $600-$800. I just sold my 256 10.5 for $600. $200 off what I paid.
Wow, you found a good buyer. I snagged up a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” 256GB WiFi + cellular with ASK and pencil for $500 at the beginning of September. No AC+, but it was only 4 months old when I got it so it still has original warranty coverage until next year.

Synology NAS supposedly has a Files app plugin to let you work with their storage products.

There are apps that plug in to files to give NAS and file server access, like FileBrowser.

We need one for external storage.

Thumb drives are getting smaller and cheaper

Oh yes. I have a 256GB Samsung FIT ($60) that's around the size of my thumbnail. Still smaller than what I tend to travel with, though. :p

Note, got a 20TB server at home (planning on upgrading the HDDs to 8-10TB this Black Friday). Long trips, I take a laptop + 4TB portable HDD (with smaller encoded videos) for use as a portable Plex Media Server. I'm not going to view all that content but I do want a good-size selection to cover whatever genre might catch my fancy. Never know when you're going to get stuck in your room for days due to inclement weather.

I love all the comments in this thread and others where people say, "Why does anybody need !TB of storage on an iPad". I've been in these forums long enough to remember when everyone was constantly saying, "Why doesn't Apple give us more options for greater storage capacity on the iPhones and iPads!!!!!!". It's one of the things I love most about the Macrumours forums. If you hang around long enough you get to see the same people complain about both sides of the same issue. :p:p:p

I plan on getting the 1Tb, 12.9'' by the way.

Well that's because the people complaining about Apple not increasing storage are NOT the same asking about why people need 1TB storage... which I would not characterize as "complaining".

Oh it's definitely complaining.

Where/how do you resell, ebay? Your strategy sounds reasonable but I've always avoided it because I could never figure out how to get a decent resale price without wasting a lot of time. And time is $$. For my 10.5 IPad pro (also 256, wifi) I looked at the major websites I'd heard of (gazelle, swappa) and there didn't seem to be an option to sell it with the accessories (smart keyboard and pencil). Don't really want to sell off each of these separately.

It’s kind of a pain, but I’ve used Facebook marketplace the last 2 years. I’ve run throw my fiancées account. You gotta put it up early though.

Getting a 1TB 12.9" cellular model.

I have two use cases for my iPad: work/productivity, and entertainment.

The first, I don't honestly need that much. A few pro apps aside, document sizes for the kinds of things I'm doing don't add up to a lot.

The second is where all of this storage goes. I travel a lot for work, so it's nice to have a large collection of media. I remember the days of smaller capacity iPhones where I would need to pick and choose which parts of my music collection to load … just having most (although not all, I guess) of my media collection available is surprisingly valuable when you're on a 15 hour flight, or spending a few weeks in another country with a crappy temporary cellular plan and little access to anything else. I can easily eat 512GB on my synced Plex library alone … add in my Comixology collection, music collection, my photo library, plenty of mobile games and it's not hard to find a use for it. It means that when I'm sitting on a plane, waiting in an airport, chilling out in an airbnb during work travel, I can for the most part peruse my media library the same way I would when I'm at home … instead of having to plan ahead every single time and manually manage an ongoing selection of things to sync.

Do I "need" any of this? Not at all. But who really needs any of this stuff. We like our shiny things ‍♀️

I sprung for the 1TB. Don't need the space now but who knows about the future. The extra memory was a plus. I have the original smaller IPP (9.7) that will go to She Who Must Be Obeyed.

I do a lot of international travel so a cloud solution doesn't always work. Plus I hope to use it as my traveling computer instead of my MBP -- at least for shorter (< 3 weeks) trips. I can do most of what I need to do these days with the IPP -- except Xcode and my apps are fairly stable so usually anything that crops up can wait a week or two. Three weeks is pushing it though, so I'll still probably take the MBP on longer trips.

I just can't use that much storage on an iPad. For a computer absolutely. Personally for a mobile device, I can't go past 256gb. the only way I would go to a 512 is if 256 wasn't offered. I'm considering a 256gb for future proofing. I'm not a cloud user, and when you stream things and internet is down then its useless.

Curious where u sold your 10.5

To answer the question: Yes I will go for it!

And then within 14 days return it!

You all didn't specify if I have to keep it, right? :p
