I didn’t say it was an older iPad. I said I wanted to keep it as long as I could and asked others how their older iPads were running.

I think battery wear's probably going to be the most annoying particularly if you have just one iPad that gets super heavy use.

With that said, the current slowdown on IPC gains and the release of the iPad 9th gen (A13/3GB) and iPad mini 6 (A15/4GB) with 2-3GB less RAM bodes well for the 2020 iPad's longevity.

Interesting I have the opposite experience. No doubting what you say about your iPad but could it be attributed to some other issue? As you were thinking of giving it away why not try resetting to factory settings, set up as a new iPad, only load the native apps and try again? If you backup first you can always restore to your backup if the problem is fixed.
Thanks for sharing also your experience! Most probably it is combination of how I use the device (most probably I am opening sites that are hungry for RAM and cause this Safari memory management issues) and maybe some specifics around how my iPad is setup.

I have never reset an iOS device so I do need to read a bit on how to do it (including doing backup as you said). However indeed I might try this. It might bring some life to it you know. At least temporarily. Thanks for suggesting it!

Settings and usage are major factors.

My brother and I both had an iPad Air 2 128GB Wi-Fi. My Air 2 is pretty much filled with apps, widgets and data, and only has 20GB free. My brother’s Air 2 only has a few streaming apps installed and has like 100GB free. My Air 2 feels noticeably laggier than his. Also, since he mostly just uses YouTube and Twitch, he doesn’t really experience the frequent hiccups I’d get with Safari.

I was fairly content with the 2017 iPad Pro until I started needing to do multitasking (Excel + Safari) without losing app state. Certain desktop websites such as Best Buy and B&H Photo were also a bit laggy/not particularly responsive on the 2017. Mouse (bluetooth) usage also seems to make things a tad laggier.

Good point about the storage. My iPad is 128 GB and I have 32 GB free. Lots of app installed though - 121. I will see what I do not use and can delete. It might help. At the least it would free some space.

Yeah, I do not even try to do split screen on this iPad. It would force close every 3 minutes and I would use my patience the second time it happens. I am not particularly patient or tolerant with things like that.

I never really use split screen on 10-11” iPads. Display’s just too small for me (feels like 2x iPhones side by side). At least on the 12.9”, split screen feels like 2x 9.7” in portrait side by side.

I have been beta testing my 10.5 pro and the beta itself went very well, the problems started after I quit the beta.
During the beta standby time was amazing and overall good performance. Once 15 released I removed the bet profile and while standby time took a small hit overall performance was and is good. The big, huge, issue is that now it won't update from 15.0 anymore, whatever I do.... And worst of all, it tells me "A new IOS update is now available. Please update from the IOS 15 beta" every single time I unlock the iPad or pull down the curtain. I tried everything, including resetting the iPad completely and even when starting from scratch the message kept coming....I tried restoring an image from another iPad, same... I tried installing a beta profile again. Same... Impossible to update and impossible to get rid of this constant message. It's a nightmare. At this point I really wished I never went through beta...

First-generation 12.9" iPad Pro here (2015). Going strong, still running betas on it. I still don't know when I'll feel the need to replace the thing. Granted, I don't work it very hard, but it handles everything I do without a hitch.

People often blame the OS for everything - after all, it's obvious when an OS is updated. It's not so obvious when a battery ages, some settings/configurations data gets scrambled, their wifi connection/router needs to be reset, etc. Sometimes the changes that come with an OS update make us more mindful of what's happening on the machine, and we notice something that might have been lurking in the background. Sometimes key apps haven't been upgraded by their developers... Lots of possibilities in a complex operating environment.

Memory management/footprint is at least partly due to the OS though. I definitely noticed more reloads (or even outright crashes) going from iOS 12 to 13, and now again from iOS 14 to 15.

As far as battery, to me it seems more or less the same since iOS 12. Noticeably worse standby battery life compared to iOS 10 and iOS 6 though. Guessing that’s due to all the background processing and indexing introduced in later firmware.

I've been threatening to upgrade for some time. I'm still using a 9.7" Pro from 2016. Seems to be running fine. I'm not a very demanding iPad user. I use it a lot but mostly just for routine stuff. There are some features of iPadOS 15 that my iPad doesn't support.

I wasn't saying that the OS is never responsible, but there are far too many people who place the blame on OS with no solid reason why. When someone cites specific reasons/theories (such as you have), it's a different matter.
