Hi,

I was wondering if any of you guys own a 20/40G iPod AND a Shuffle. I have a 20G 3rd gen iPod and I am thinking of getting a Shuffle. But im not sure if I should. Have those who have recently bought a Shuffle put there previous iPod in a draw (or sold it on ebay)?

For those who have both a Shuffle and an Ipod:
how do you use it? i.e. do u set up special playlists for your Shuffle? When do you primarily use your Shuffle (i.e. at the gym) and when do you primarily use your iPod (i.e. when at work/uni)?

I would image if I had both I would use the Shuffle when Im just going out for the day to the movies or shopping etc... But if I was going to do a big stint in the library I would take my 20G iPod with me so that I have a range of music to listen to throughout the day - you know how it is sometimes when you are studying/working you can only listen to certain songs and other songs drive you mad depending on how you are feeling.

Let me know if I should bother with a Shuffle or just stick with what I have.

Cheers

I ALMOST fit what you are looking for, so I'm going to respond anyways. :) I have a 10gb 2nd generation iPod and a 1gb shuffle. The 10gb I take to work with me and use to help me make it through the day. Also, I help out with the youth group at my church, so if we need either some mood music for quiet times, or some praise and worship music, I have it all there with me.

The shuffle I use when I go to the gym primarily. I bought it for that reason as well as to use as a usb flash drive. So I have my portfolio and résumé on there, as well as any files I may need to transfer from home to work (or vice versa). I use about 750mb for music and the rest for free storage. The playlist I have on it now is just a smartlist with my top 150 most played songs, but I am thinking about switching to something with more of a "gym" flavor, if you will.

I find that both iPods serve totally different needs. I have not regretted the decision to purchase either of them in any way. The iPod, I think, is one of those devices that changes the way you live. Much like they say Tivo changes the way you watch tv, my iPods have changed the way I experience music.

As for whether you should get one...it really depends on what you are looking for. I got a 1gb usb flash drive, that could also keep me motivated at the gym, and all that for (I thought) a low price. You'll have to decide if it's worth it to you. It definitely was for me! :)

They Make A Great Combo...

Again, I don't fit the exact description you're looking for - I have a 5GB 1G iPod and a 1GB iPod Shuffle.

I use the 5GB iPod when I'm just listening to listen... just hanging out, working on projects, or anything that requires a lot of time. Then I have a large pool of different kinds of music to keep me entertained (and that great feeling where you forget about a song and it comes on and you just start singing out loud). I keep that little 5GB iPod almost filled to the brim!

The shuffle serves a whole new purpose for me. When I just bought a new album from iTMS, or ripped a newly purchased CD, I copy it over to the shuffle. I also use the shuffle if I'm going on a short trip or have a little bit of work to do. The shuffle also makes a great "mood player" - where you're just in a certain mood to hear a certain band, a certain style, or a certain era. Just load it up and go!!

I think (at least for me) they make a great complimentary pair, and both serve unique purposes. YMMV.

I use my regular iPod for everyday stuff. Prob the same as what you use it now. Walks to class, studyin, etc. I use the Shuffle when I go running, or when I forget to charge my regular iPod, and the batter goes dead. Running is the main use though. As for the music, I just use Auto-fill, and it randomly selects something for me. I change it every day. I like them both.

I've got a 15gig 3G iPod and a 512 Shuffle. I take the Shuffle with me almost everywhere in case I want some music on the way. The 3G iPod usually comes on long road trips or is used to transfer large files between computers. Although, the battery is going dead on my 3G and I just bought a Lacie external HD so I am afraid that my poor iPod will be seeing less use and a bit more just sitting in it's dock and lookng pretty.

I have a 10GB 2nd Gen iPod and a 1GB Shuffle. I use the Shuffle more actually. I used it on my snowmobile rides this winter, well when I got back from Iraq in the spring. We went to the mountains in Wyoming and I was having so much fun that I bought a brand new 2005 Yamaha RS Rage 4 stroke snowmobile! I love my Mac, but I get a LOT MORE thrill factor from the Yammi! It worked great under my jacket and the ear buds fit under the helmet well. I think for working out, riding bike, or in my case, snowmobiling, the Shuffle is great. I still use my 10GB for times when I want more music, but the Shuffle is a good investment.

Which Shuffle did you guys go with? The 512MB or the 1GB? Considering you have an iPod is the 1GB necessary?

Cheers

As you can see by my sig, I have multiple iPods. I would recommend the 1gig version simply because you might want to be able to use it as a flash storage drive, too. That way, you can store some pretty big files and still have room for 100-200 songs.

I have both and I use them about the same. If I am walking into University then I use the Shuffle as it only takes 20 minutes or so and when I am there I can use it as a flash drive which is a life saver. Fantastic feature. Anyway I also use my 20GB 3rd Gen iPod when I am on the train or doing something that does not require me to carry it around. They are both fantastic. For my iPod shuffle I have created a folder that has all of my songs that are 4-starts or more and then just random fill from that. Easy and great fun (although when am usng it I am often thinking - "I gave THAT 4-stars!").

Like mostly everyone else i use my shuffle for the gym and for running. I have 3g 20 gig and a .5 gig shuffle. Autofill is a god send. I used to take my 3g with me everywhere, i have spare chargers for my car and my gf's house. I used to go running with it 4 nights a week, but a nasty spill at the park forced me to think about the shuffle. I ate it hard, the ipod even harder. It survived momentarily, a week later the HD failed. But best buy has(had) a good warranty, and i got a new one. The shuffle eats it all the time and always comes back swinging. 100 bucks is a great investment compared to 300 for new ipod every 2 months or so(the way i was going).

You have to admire apple's business model that cultivates such desire.

It boggles the mind. People owning more than one ipod based on the difference in physical size. If you told someone 5 years ago when you could probably get a cd player for about $40 that Apple is going to sell people a music player about half the size of a cd player for over $200, and those buyers will then buy another player half of that size for another $100 you would be considered crazy.

20 GB 4G iPod
1 GB Shuffle

As most have already said the Shuffle is great for walks, runs or working out at the gym. I use my big iPod with my iTrip in the car and throughout most of my workday. The big one is great at work as I have my entire music collection and can pick out whatever song, album or playlist I want to listen to. I usually load up my Shuffle with my newest music, current favorites or music to suit my current mood before I go for walks or work out - it's so light and small you barely notice it. The big iPod was just too clunky for working out, even on walks it was a bit too big/heavy. The iPod mini would probably be a good compromise for both types of usage.

If you get a shuffle I would go for the 1GB. The way I figure it, you spend $50 more and you get to have 240 rather than 120 songs. That's like 10 albums or 20, seems a significant difference in my mind - especially if you are going to reserve space for data.

In the 80's people owned boom-boxes and walkmans, no? Granted they could be had for cheaper then but these devices have more storage and more functionality - and there is always inflation.

I have a new 4 GB Mini, my dad has a 40 GB iPod, and my sister has a 512 shuffle. I have used all of them frequently, and I really would recommend getting a shuffle just because it takes some of the nervousness out of regular iPod use. Shuffles are just harder to break and easier to replace if stolen. On kind of a similar note, three days ago my sister put her shuffle through part of a wash cycle before realizing she'd left it in her pocket. Upon taking it out and seeing it not light up or play music, she panicked and plugged it into our Airport Express (to recharge it) without letting it dry. We were all fairly sure she'd fried it, but last night it started working again, good as new (hopefully…). They really are tough little pieces of hardware.

30GB 3G ipod
1GB Shuffle

Must say i went through the exact same thing you did before i bought it. I've had mine now since 3rd April and have to admit that i haven't used my 3G ipod once! Why? Well it a combination of factors really.

First off the shuffle is so damn light that i don't even know i'm carrying it(30GB would always be a weight in my pocket). This is a plus not only for college and walking round town but the solid state memory is important for gym work, running, jogging etc.

Second is the battery life. Sure i haven't been playing it non stop but after charging it when i got it nearly a month ago it's still going strong ie.green led(please consider of course the odd sync to change playlist). I had used my 3G in the same manner and after 2-3 days the battery would be empty.

Next up is the memory size. I was always a bigger is better type(still am since i bought the 1GB over 512MB) which is why i got the 30GB ipod. 7500 songs in your pocket must be the way to go i thought. Fact is i was carrying round 7500 songs but was too lazy to experiment with new songs, so just listened to bout 50-60 favourites. Truth is 1GB really is enough(i split mine 512 for music and 512 for data by the way)
Now i just make playlists which reflect my mood such as gym, classical, favourites and experimental and just sync my shuffle when i feel like a change. With my current configuration i keep bout 100+ songs on it at any time and thats more than enough for me, to my surprise at times.

Another big plus for me was the ability to use it as a memory key. 512 MB is more than enough for my college data and instead of carrying a heavy 3G ipod and a memory key, i've now combined the two into a neat little package.

At first, i wasn't sure bout the lack of a screen and menu system but having gotten used to it i don't miss it at all. I've never had a need to see song names cos i use my shuffle in "play directly through playlist" so if something new comes up, i just check it in itunes that night. Hate to buy into apple advertising but i'm enjoying the "life is random" thing :)

So anything else? Well right now i feel kinda guilty when i see my 30GB just sitting in its dock unused but it was the best i could buy nearly two years ago and i enjoyed having it. Will i sell it? No, since it has doubled as an external hard drive for when i do clean reinstalls which means i'm going to keep it.

Buying the shuffle was the best thing i've done in a while. While my 3G was great, it was heavy and cumbersome at the same time so i would often leave it at home. Since buying a shuffle i've listened to a heck of alot of music because i take it everywhere with me(i didn't even do this when i first got my 3G). As a result I actually feel more attached to my shuffle than my 3G. Don't get me wrong, the 30GB is great if your on the plane, train, sitting in a library but if you are going to be up and about i want something that is light and much more resilient to bumps and knocks.
I say get yourself a 1GB Shuffle and that way you have ample room for not only music but data too.
Crikey that was a long post. Hope all that waffle was of some help.

I have a 4G 20 gig iPod for general use and in the car. I also have a 512 MB Shuffle that I only use at the gym. It's perfect for when I'm running on the treadmill.

i have an ipod Shuffle and an ipod G3, i only use the shuffle now, and i'm probably going to sell the G3. i have a friend who's willing to pay about $150 canadian for it....i think this is a good deal considering i think it needs a new battery and its scratched up so bad

i havea 3G 15GB ipod and a 1GB shuffle... which i got about a week ago and havent used my 15gigger since then lol. i love the shuffle. i didnt think icould live without a screen or without my whole library. the great thing about the shuffle is that every song on there is gonna be a song you love. so every song that comes on doesnt matter.. and thus i dont really need a screen.. if i want to find a specific song i dont put it in shuffle mode and since the songs are in order of artist they are easy to find.

anywase i like the shuffle becuase it is convenient and soooo light.. wow..

but on the other hand i would never replace my ipod with it.. the shuffle is good for hte gym and as you said times when you just wanna quickly take it for some music.. i love it.. and having a shuffle and an ipod is a GREAT combination

I have a 10GB 3G iPod and 512 Shuffle

I like having some tunes while mowing the grass, and the Shuffle is nice because it is barely noticeable while carrying it in my pocket.

Plus, if traveling, I won't feel as bad if I lose my 512 MB Shuffle rather than a $349 iPod.

i have the exact same things, but i DO feel that the shuffle could replace my 3G, i never use it anymore, its too big now, the only way i'll ever get another 'normal' ipod is if they get video and colour standard, as well as BT, or if i win one :)

I have a 20GB 3G iPod and a 1GB Shuffle. I use my shuffle for when I'm mountain biking or skiing, or when I don't want to carry around the 3G (going for a walk, washing or working on my car). I use my 3G in my car all the time (it's hardwired, SOOOO much better than having a car full of CD's), but I also use it when I want to listen to specific tunes. I look at my Shuffle as a companion to my 3G...it's great to have both, but just having a Shuffle wouldn't do it for me.

Hey,

I've got a 20gig iPod, and a shuffle, purely for a simple reason, I can take my shuffle into town on a friday night, and if I get attacked, or if I simply loose my trousers then I've lost significantly less than if I had lost my 20gb, that, and also, its alot easier to carry around something so small in comparison.

Ensign

yep, like others in this thread I have a 20GB iPod and then got a 1GB shuffle. I got the shuffle for gym use, at the beach, etc. Since having the shuffle, I've rarely used the 20GB iPod. I almost always used shuffle mode anyway and the shuffle device is so much lighter, smaller, etc.
