I have the exact same thing as you: a 3G 20 GB iPod and wanted a shuffle. I wanted it for its music capabilities, but also as a USB flash drive.
I got the 1 GB version, and it is SO worth it. First of all, I allocated 50 MB for files and let the rest of the 950 MB for music. It is awesome. I have all my favorite CDs preloaded and then autofill fills the "gaps." I discovered so much music.
Once you get your shuffle, hear the amazing quality and feel how light it is, you will want that as your primary iPod.
I use it walking, at the gym, on the bus, everywhere. 12 hours of battery life is advertised, but thats not the case. It has been, for me, over 17 hours of play - I got it in Mid-April and never charged it yet (not even from the box - it comes fully charged) I'm listening to it right now.
The 20 GB is great but the shuffle is so much easier - just flip a switch and its on! And, I just flip the same switch and its off, I dont have to wait 3 seconds holding down the play/pause button which sometimes doesnt work.
GET THE SHUFFLE.
