People here have decided that Apple can only release Mac Pro updates when Intel updates their chips.

Apparently somewhere along the way, Apple signed over their rights to update their Mac line to Intel. But I've already been around and around with people here about that.

If Apple updates their Mac Pro line this year I plan to hand out some crow. :)

Of course Apple can upgrade the Mac Pro this summer, but as I understand it will mostly be about TB. They may get their hands on the new chip-sets late this year, so there might just be a chance for something big before christmas? And since they'll not upgrade MP twice a year, it'll be one or the other.

Major upgrade, minor upgrade, it's a grey area.

Ofc Apple can redesign the current chassis and insert a TB port up it's arse but that along with the current CPU type isn't a major upgrade, it's a minor.
Mac Pro users on this forum are expecting Sandy Bridge Xeons in their Xmas stockings and that is the major upgrade they are waiting for.

AMD server chips in a Mac Pro? Hmm not likely I reckon, but stranger things have happened. Bring on the Bulldozer and let battle commence!

IBM server chips in a Mac Pro? Hey Doc! Crank up the Delorean we need to get back to 2003!

It's to do with the economy of scale, and you've seemed to discount/ignore this point.

If the MP's sales numbers were extremely high, they could opt to make mid-year changes (not dependent on the CPU). But that's not happening with this particular product, so the logical conclusion is that they aren't selling enough units to do this, and all that's left is using Intel's cycles as a means of creating new systems (add in other changes simultaneously to keep such costs as low as possible). It all boils down to the development costs, and if it's divided by too few systems, it's not profitable.

And we both know Apple is about keeping their margins high. ;)

See above. ;)

That goes both ways... So when what you expect doesn't happen, I hope you'll have your knife and fork ready. :D :p

There aren't any new chipsets for the LGA1366 sockets, nor will there be.

Even the X79, which is designed to accompany the LGA2011 sockets, does not have TB built-in. TB will still be a separate component; whether they use an embedded GPU and solder it to the logic board, or place it on a PCIe card (either a separate card + means of getting the DisplayPort signal to the TB chip, or include it on the graphics card).

Can we mutually agree we're allowed to have sriracha sauce? :p
Depends on how hot it is.

Not sure what goes good with Crow, but presume as it's a form of foul, lots of things could go nicely. Perhaps a nice pesto with some cheese would make it tastey. :D :p

Oooo that might go well with crow.

Of course if a Mac Pro shows up in November I think we could both declare victory. :p

No, your premise is that the Mac Pro can be updated without an Intel processor update.
If the new Mac Pro comes out in November with a Sandy Bridge processor, you lose.
.

Depends. ;)

November would almost certainly be an announcement only, not shipped product. But more imporantly, the CPU it uses is the defining characteristic (anything other than a Sandy Bridge + TB, and you nailed it; Sandy Bridge, even if there' no TB, I do = I hope you're hungry :p).
