yeah i am using the headphones that come with my iphone3G, and they sound pretty good for freebie buds. For serious listening i use my Shure SE530 and have previously used Ety 4P's and 6i's which i liked but preferred the SE530's for the bass! Seriously i think for casual listening the ipod buds sound more than adequate, find them fairly comfortable too. As for the audio quality of the ipod, i rip at a minimum of 320 or lossless and I can't imagine any other device sounding so good and at the same time so portable (160gb) especially if you use headphones of the quality of Shure's, Ety's or UE'S amongst others.

I hate the iPod Phones, for packins theyre second only to Sony, but i hate in ear headphones, either earcanal seal, or over ear. I Chose over ear, with some Sennheisser HD 205's.

I have used tons of different kinds of headphones, i have always had multiple pairs. Anything from recording studio cans, and noise canceling. I am a music major at college right now. I record all of my own music at home. I need quality that is portable.

I have never heard worse headphones. Ever.

The point of this being, is I wanted to know if the iPod world ACTUALLY puts up with such poor quality.

Well, you are a music major, and your stated range of headphones is from "recording studio cans" to "noise canceling". You don't sound exactly typical, and you sound as though you would even be unlikely to consider very cheap phones, as you undoubtedly do have a higher standard than average, and are probably aware of it.

As far as very cheap phones are concerned, the included buds are nowhere near the worst, in my experience. I in fact have two worse-sounding (although more comfortable) pair right now I'd be happy to let you listen to.
I do believe you when you say you have never heard worse because you wouldn't normally even consider cheap phones.

That is most definitely true. I would love to have a listen to your headphones though. :D Assuming they are not broken or blown out.

Received my Sennheiser MM50 iPhone earphones today, and apart from them being 10x more comfortable than apples earphones, i haven't noticed much difference in the sound quality TBH. Id be perfectly happy with apple earphones as regards to sound quality, but they are just a little uncomfortable.

Who actually uses the headphones that come with your ipod? Because if you do I do not think you deserve to have an iPod.

I have NEVER heard worse quality headphones than that. In fact, in all of the blown out car systems, and trashed speakers, and horrible screechy drive through speakers, i have heard, i have never heard anything worse!!!

Is there are reason why Apple gives out such horrible headphones? Is that cuz they figure that you will just buy new headphones anyways?

I think your just a pretentious douche quite frankly, I used to use my ipod headphones all the time and they sounded fine to me.

Quite the intelligent lingo. Think what you want though, your opinion is as valid as mine. :)

As I said before the iPod earphones sound perfectly OK to me too. They fit me OK, unlike many other people who complained of bad sound, so there's no particular impediment to me putting them on apart from the fact that I prefer isolated earphones.

However, *as* a debatably pretentious but a confirmed douche I'd never be caught dead with them on. I have never, ever worn a pair in regular use to be at one with the iPodders - even back in the misty mists of time when it was a fashion accessory.

Surely you guys bought into the Macintosh thing because of the image? They're certainly no ******* good for anything else. And image-wise, sporting iPod earphones in public is so over, now more than ever. It means for a start you're devoid of imagination.

- worst headphones invented
- worst sound quality
- uncomfortable
- white? lol
all they care about is flying the apple flag and showing the world "oi look
at me, im so cool , ive got an ipod, im cool" (ive met these people)
- i hate all people who choose to wear the white apple phones.
- i tried them for like 3 secs........and i have never used again.

- one word. SONY

VERY GOOD SOUND QUALITY. LONG LASTING. black so dont stand out.
legendary company and brand when it comes to walkmans etc.

apple need to team up with sony....sony should make the earphone for apple ipods.

good thread. i thought i was the only one who thought this....realised this.

If Apple and Sony became one company, I would stop buying Apple's products. I hate Sony and their disgustingly terrible products with a passion, and have not bought one in ten years.

Edit: This doesn't include Sony products inside other products, such as batteries.

I've stated in this thread why I use them. Because while as a musician, I disown them, as a consumer, I have no need for anything else. They're comfortable to me, and they don't sound terrible. This DOESN'T mean I think they're the best headphones ever, I just have no reason to buy other headphones for listening to my iPod.

Also, as a musician who most likely knows more about "sound quality and comfort" than you, I take a lot of offence to your rantings.

dude..........i found it SO HARD to switch from sony tape walkmans to the ipod.......i really struggled with it. one of the toughest deciscion ive ever had to make. im happy now.

but sony RULE the personal stereo market.....not now obviously, but they are the fathers.....the daddys..........i doubt apple ipod would exist if not for sony walkman craze........they are the originators.

im loyal to sony as a brand, when it comes to earphones.
it the only ones i buy.

The day that some earphones come out with a Mic / remote as awesome as the iPhone ones, is the day I shall use some new earphones with my iPhone.

I know the sound quality isn't amazing, but I really couldn't live without that damn mic thingy.

A lot of people like Sony products. I hate them, think they're terrible, and boycott them in every way I can.

If you like Sony's products, I don't care, but your post was just "lol only fanbois use those headphones. They know nothing abut qualty and are stupd. Sony is the best and shuld make there prudicts." Hell, I like Creative more than Sony, even after they screwed me every time I bought a Zen.

I bet you it would. Not that the iPod was a completely original idea, but it was based on the mp3 players that were out at the time, and even if Sony never made an mp3 player, someone else would have came up with the idea of carrying your music on a small device in your pocket.

I buy products from whatever company offers me what I feel is the best deal.

dude, sony are good quality products. good prices also. and no baggage or "cool" branding or image attached. functional trustworthy earphones. no messing about. good product for good price. forget sonys other products. just look at the earphones. i aint got a clue what sony makes aparts from earphones, i dont care. their earphone DO IT for me.

sony may not be the best. but they are the most respected. they got a good history and reputation.

sony made mp3 player before ipod?

im basing my opinion on over 10 years of buying theri walkmans and earphones. even tho they break after coupla years or more of intense useage. i even bought a sony walkman off ebay 2 years ago cause they were discontinued in shops. i couldnt let go.

analogue tape is also better than digital mp3........in some respects.

To be honest, I was impressed with the quality of the Apple earbuds. I expected something crappier, given that good headphones, (even if earbuds) go for between $100 and $200. That's an iPod nano right there. I'm sure it costs less than $5 to make the headphones - maybe less than $1. Still, consumers don't want to pay any more for an iPod. Most people think iPods are expensive as they are. If Apple were to throw in earbuds that cost $10 to make but adds that much more to the price, consumers will whine that they don't need 'em. Especially hardcore audiophiles who will go out and buy a pair of $200 Shure ones anyway.

Are they the best? Of course not.
Are they appropriate? I think so.

Especially true for me, since usually I'm listening to them on a train or bus and the surrounding ambience is killing all the nuances of the music anyway.
And that's my one qualm with the earbuds is they don't fit snugly enough into your ears to block out external noise, so a lot of the low end never makes it to your ear canal. Then I find myself turning the volume up louder to compensate, which can't be good for my hearing.
In the end they've still exceeded my expectations though.

well said.
but the price we pay for ipods........should get better earphones. better design, better sound.....its like buying a ferrari.....with old worn out almost flat tyres....or trying to use coca cola for fuel.......

sony earphones my friend. sony.......

Good points, and logic.

Although, Apple sells these headphones for 30 dollars. If for 30 dollars a person can buy headphones that are superior in quality, (according to people here across the board admitting that these headphones are sub-par in quality compared to others in the 30 dollar range.) Then why are we stuck with these headphones coming with our iPods?

Here is a thought experiment. If you could buy an ipod without headphones, and apple would give you 30 dollars in credit to purchase headphones, would you buy apple's headphones?

I use all my apple headphones with any ipod/iphone I buy. I had a ipod mini, and used the apple headphones, had an ipod touch and used the same ones too, now I have an iPhone and use the apple ones as well. I don't really have a problem with them, and would rather not spend $100 on another pair.....but that's just me.

You do have a good point there in terms of what else is available. The Sony NWZA728 8Gb player is $150 street, while the equivalent Nano is $200. First of all the Sony is better hardware all round, albeit lacking the iTunes integration - which to me is important. The pack-in earphones with the Sony also blows the Apple articles away in terms of fit and usability, as well as offering better sound quality (as well as far more bass, for those who care about that sort of thing).

when i see someone using apple ipod earphone ..........feel complete disdain.

ive never used that word, so maybe im using it wrong. i apologise.

but the sound quality is just not good.
and they are not comfortable. dont fit.
how can that shape fit in a human ear?
it really is a disgrace.

to be fair.

sony earphones = mmm

I use the ones that come with my iPhone. Why?
- inline mic is convenient
- only thing that fits in the recessed headphone jack

However, not long after supergluing the speakers with the shells, they are starting to fall apart again. Plus they look like they have been chewed by a dog :( so I want a decent replacement. I'm looking at the Monster or Griffin in-line mics so I can use my own headphones again…lol

No matter how much you keep repeating that Sony makes good quality products, it's not going to make it true. I don't give a **** about their headphones, because I've chosen to boycott them and buying their products would eliminate the purpose of that. The only person who's ever said something almost convincing enough to make me buy a Sony product was Sesshi, talking about his ultra-portable laptop. Sony seems to me like a very high-end PC manufacturer, though I still would not buy one of their computers.

Who cares? Every single product you buy has branding attached, and if you buy your stuff based on the image or lack of image it conveys, you're pretty shallow. I didn't purchase a Macbook because I wanted to be cool, I bought it because I find OS X to be the most efficient OS for me to use. So, you can blabber all you want about your "image," while I'm here, getting real work done.

As I said, if you want to buy their headphones, buy them. I don't care what you buy. All I said was, I think they make a terrible product (ESPECIALLY their gaming systems *shudder*) and, I don't want to buy them.

I wouldn't say they are the most respected, though they are well known.

Again, that's great...I'm sure their walkmans are fine. I still don't want to buy one.

I'm curious as to what aspects these are..?

disdain |disˈdān|
noun
the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect; contempt

When I see someone who is completely cynical and hypocritical, who judges people based on the electronics they use, while at the same time insulting people who do the same thing, I feel complete disdain.

Also, this is how they fit in a human ear:

When are you going to get it through your head that insulting people who use the headphones doesn't make them bad headphones? Everyone has already agreed with you that they are not amazing, but they aren't the crappiest, and you saying they are doesn't make them. Hell, even Sesshi has said they're not the worst headphones ever, and Sesshi doesn't even like his bajillion Macs. He's certainly not afraid to tell the truth.

Sennheiser earphones = Mmmm.
