I wouldn't want Apple to buy Netflix. I doubt Netflix would sell in anyways. They are doing great and kicking blockbuster/redbox to the curb.

Smaller companies are really where the great ideas are born. If you have the money, buy it, even if you don't use it for ten years.

Yeah, I think cover flow came from a small company Apple bought up.

How about this: Apple buys TiVo, Inc.

Now before I get thrown a lot of brickbats, ;) it actually makes sense. It would allow Apple to strike a deal with cable TV companies, DirecTV and Dish Network so you get a very sophisticated DVR box using the Apple TV interface that (in my opinion) essentially uses a cigarette box-sized interface case that slides into the back of the DVR box depending on the provider. When the interface case is provided by the cable company, it would have built-in two-way communications with the cable company for things like program guides and on-demand services AND even support switched digital video (SDV) to accommodate more channels. And of course, such a DVR will include 802.11n support so it could play media files through AirPlay or from any router running 802.11n connected to a computer that has iTunes 10.0 or later running.

Jobs and co. should compete with MS on their own turf. Make a PC (IBM-derived/compatible) OS. :D Windows is MS' strongest/most profitable product, though MS Office ranks highly (IE is free so no real revenue earner). Apple can use its brand to compete. Sign a deal/alliance with one of the top PC makers to have a choice of Windows or an Apple PC OS. this ensures market share to some degree. Apple's strong suit is music players and tablet PCs, so MS cannot immediately compete on Apple's turf. MS is a software company, so an MS rival to the iPad or iPhone would not be necessarily an immediate starter; people would be confused if a software firm makes hardware.

I think that suggestion makes more sense than so many of the dumb rumours going around.

Either something like that, or Netflix, which already dominates the industry and has agreements with films distributers.

It really depends on how much intellectual property comes with the company, and/or whether it's a product or a service. Apple doesn't seem to do as well with services as they do with products. iPod, iPad, etc, even the iTunes and App Stores are products. Services, like Tivo or Netflix, would give them a boost.

Oh, I don't know...

Maybe they could reinstate the dividend that was "temporarily" suspended over 15 years ago back in 1995.

I wish they'd do something really useful. Like becoming the first truly green company.

Apple's physical form factors last longer than many other companies (think of how long the AlBook style stuck around), so it would be easier for them to move to a more sustainable model of computing. At the moment though I think they are prevented from moving to a really aggressive remanufacturing model (like Xerox) by the current standards of how the internal components are made (CPUs, logic boards, etc.). As Apple ventures further into first-party component design (A4 is just the beginning hopefully), this could potentially be corrected down the line.

As for what they should do with their money, my number one request is that they help finance/lobby for regional fiber internet projects. If ISPs continue to consolidate and restrict what people can do with their connections (e.g. data caps, throttling youtube/netflix, etc.), then Apple's devices won't be of much use to the large swaths of the US where this kind of anti-competitive behavior is prevalent.

Maybe they could reinstate the dividend that was "temporarily" suspended over 15 years ago back in 1995.

The stock has had a 4817% return on investment over the past 8 years, and you still want them to provide a dividend?

Maybe TiVo, but I like Netflix as is. I can't wait to see what Apple buys next. :D
