The negative news articles about the iPhone seem too coordinated to be random criticisms. I really suspect some systemic forces are at work here against Apple.
Just to stoke the flames of suspicion:
Apple’s competitors, by contrast, find the prospect of the iPhone terrifying. "The entire ****ing Western world hopes that it’s a case of imperial overstretch," says the CEO of one of the planet's largest communications companies. "But everybody is quietly saying, er, what if people want to buy a $500 phone? What if, er, people have been waiting for a device that does all these things? What if this thing works as advertised? I mean, my God, what then?"

I've been reading articles from Information Week, and they've generally been scatching and mocking. I get the impression that pushback from readership has toned down many of the harder remarks however. I get the impression that regarding the media, its all about "eyeballs". Glowing remarks aren't as interesting as negative comments. Right now, I believe that Tom Merritt at CNET has taken the position of a "heel" (as the term goes in wrestling). He takes every free moment (especially on Buzz Out Loud) to bash the iPhone. Tom's a smart guy though. I get the impression that he is: a.) only representing a cartoon of his real opinion. b.) trying to be the voice of people tired of hearing about the iPhone. and c.) trying to generate controversy and stir up feedback by playing devil's advocate, which he often does.

Negative News can sell, especially if it has teeth. I'm amazed at all the people who endless repeat the mantra: "No 3G", "No removeable battery", "Too expensive!" and the like. For the most educated amongst them, I can't believe they do not realize the state of the market that we're in. This device isn't groundbreaking because people simply say so... it is because it is.

I personally (just by myself) have some ideas I'm hoping to execute for the iPhone that I am utterly stunned... that I can say, has NEVER been possible in the history of consumer electronics... before iPhone that is. That's just great. But, instead, people want to note that some of iPhone's technology could be more "bleeding edge". One 3G radio, a 5MP camera, and a price drop later... and it will truly rise to the level of ubiquity.

This device isn't groundbreaking because people simply say so... it is because it is.

What??? It isn't because someone says it is, but it is because YOU say it is?

Ummm.. I think groundbreaking would be the E=mc^2? You're saying this device is that groundbreaking? When you step back from all the hype, it compiles several already invented devices into one (and lowers all quality of all the other inventions).

Cool idea, yes. Groundbreaking not even close. In five years people are going to laugh at it. No one's laughing at Einstein.
I'm sorry if I'm trolling, but some people need a reality check.

Microsoft, Nokia, Pam, RIM. Sony Ericcson. It's very easy to start a buzz (negative or positve) on the internet. But I have only seen one negative article and that was in the UK Times.I think the positive buzz outbuzzes the bad buzz by far though.

Sorry for double post so -Apple have brought some of the bad press on themselves though. By releasing the news of it 6 months ago is enough time for some of the hype to turn sour.

It would seem to me that the press and public relations departments at Nokia, Sony, LG, Samsung, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile (to name just a few) would have the greatest interest in persuading their familiar friends in the press that cover cellular technologies that perhaps the iPhone isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

I don't think that the PR departments of the phone companies are as worried as Verizon, Sprint and T-mobile. I suspect that their PR departments are using the web press to criticize the iPhone while they are really just trying to convince people not jump ship to AT&T. AT&T is the biggest winner here in the partnership.

The other cell phone companies probably arent extremely worried of having a new competing phone yet, maybe when iPhone variations are out they'll worry, but right now they have HUGE and much more competitive markets in developing countries which is were a lot of money is being made in cell phone sales.

Here in America, I doubt that the average V3 RAZR user will drop that much cash for the iPhone and plan, if they do then good for Apple, but hopefully not every happless consumer will have one where I have to see it every other phone at restaurants, cinemas, classes, seminars...

So you're convinced that Mossberg (and his employer the WSJ), who contrary to what gets parroted often criticizes Apple products, is taking money and/or instructions from Apple under the table? :D His reputation is worth so little, and he needs extra cash so badly? :p

No, I am suggesting that the friendly, insider, VIP relationship that he has enjoyed during this extended courtship by Apple has had its influence.

Oh my goodness..ROFLMAO.. I just checked that forum out- you've got to read the thread about the guy who's getting his SECOND Zune tatoo.. Scroll down and there's pictures.. Too funny..

That has to be the funniest thing I've seen today, who get 2 zune tatoos?

Well, who gets Apple tatoos?

Touché, but then again, in 20 years people will be like "Hey an Apple Tattoo!" and the zune dude will be trying to get surgery to remove his after everyone that see it is like "Dude, what's up with the colorful box and stick figure dude?"

who badmouths the iphone?

people that actaully look at the specs and compare it with the price to see if its worth it (the people that shop around for the best deal)

apple products have never been the "best deal" for anything

phones that are 2 years old have better specs than the iphone, people that need a phone and are willing to pay HIGH premiums want products that are worth their money. money for a lot of people does not fall out of trees, they work for it, and they want the most out of it.

spec for spec, dollar for dollar, the iphone is not worth it at all just like the ipod. the ipod is not even a mediocre mp3 player in terms of features but its one of the most expensive.

the people that buy it are the people that want another mac product and they want to complete their collection of mac things

Bold statements...I sense 'sour grapes.' What makes the iPod so great is the ease of use and solid design. It completely changed the portable music industry and it wasn't because of the price. There is an iPod out there for every income bracket, and I think it's quite affordable. The iPhone, on the other hand, is on the pricey side of things, but people want what they want. Eventually, it will come down in price just as the iPods have, and when it revolutionizes the mobile industry, nobody will care how much it cost at launch.

there are more things but to keep this post somewhat readable ill stop with the specs, but you see why the ipod is lacking?

the reason why people like the ipod and think it good is because they are not educated on other products and their specs, half the people i work with dont even know what a meizu is until i showed them mine, at that point they sold their ipod and bought one online.

other mp3 players such as the Cowon D2 put the Meizu to shame (the meizu is a lower end mp3 player) so what does that make the ipod look like? the ipod is more expensive than the Cowon D2. the cowon D2 is a 12GB capable player (expandable SDHC slot). Also the quality of the meizu is around the same if not better, both players are made in china, the ipod has a lower cost of materials

Still doesn't change the fact that the iPod is easy to use. You even say that

"Yes, you can set the player to MTP and have it sync with any MTP compatible software, personally i hate programs that do the work for me, i want to do it myself because im not lazy and my mp3s are already organized. drag and drop for me."

Most people aren't like this, they want plug in, sync, go. All you have to do is download iTunes, plug in your iPod and you're ready to go. That's what make the iPod a success. If it wasn't for the iPod, products like the Meizu wouldn't be what they are, if they existed at all. You can blame it on ignorance if you want, whatever helps you justify your position, but numbers don't lie, and the numbers say iPod is a superior product and huge success.

apple products have never been the "best deal" for anything

BS. People, crowds, the masses, whatever, are terrible at valuing what is actually important. Apple is a good deal. Its better to spend $250 on an iPod that you'll actually use, then $200 for some Creative POS that has more "features" but winds up in your tech junk drawer because, its, well, a POS.

People make decisions based on features, but studies show people prefer ease of use in the long term. Humans are just bad decision makers when it comes to choosing what will make us happy.

This is one of the reasons that the Apple cult gets so much attention. People don't understand whats so great about Apple, but if you actually use their products, you get really into them because they work so well, despite their apparent "lacking" in the "features."

i dont think M$ is the one apple is worrying about, they only hold a 22% share in the mobile phone world with WM5/6. it Symbian phones like nokia and SE that they are more concerned about because nokia is the largest manufacture of symbian phones, and nokia is also the largest SMART phone manufacture
