I just tried the Xtreme Mac HDMI switcher and I cannot get any video just audio from my Comcast box....GRRRRR

Stories like that one make me very happy I bought an HDTV with 3 HDMI inputs. Cable hd box, DVD, and apple tv via hdmi, Wii on component and my Powerbook on VGA.

Picked up a 40gb on Friday using 2 different iphone $100 credits (bought one for me and my gf the day they came out) and even without the update I'm extremely enjoying it.

I have held off ripping any DVD's so far. Just converting some stuff here and there while waiting. I bought it for the bedroom and having the ability to stream music there has been a blessing.

Looking forward to Take 2.

I'm waiting to see what people say about the quality of HD movie rentals, so no AppleTV yet & maybe not one for a while. I'm planning to get second PS3 so that might come first.

Me - 40gb refurb.

I'd been toying w/the idea of a Mac Mini as a media server but the $$ difference won out in the end - $199 vs $599/799 + new keyboard/mouse was too much in the end as all I really want is to play movies, stream music and look at my iPhoto gallery. $400/600 saved will buy an awful lot of movies...

I only hope that it will play my ripped movies in 5.1 without too much hacking.

Just got one today. =]

Just wondering, how much noticeable is the difference between 5.1 and the regular sound rips for DVDs? (I don't have a sound system...just the TV)

Yeah, if you have TV sound only, the sound really won't be any different.

Damn, I just remembered movie rentals are only for 24 hrs. That won't work for me, so no AppleTV in my immediate future.

I did

I was browsing the online Apple Store yesterday and saw they had a few in as refurb, so as soon as I could I grabbed myself one of them! Can't wait for it to arrive and eagerly awaiting the software update!

Yeah that " 24 hr view time " sucks.

I guess I can understand the " 30 Day Limit " buy gosh darn it you should be able to view a rented movie as many times in a rental period as you desire.

When I rent a Movie from say Blockbuster, though I rented it for one day I can watch it as many times as I desire in that one day.

Other than that, I think we are still getting a 160 ATV.

Renting from Apple is no reason to buy an ATV for us, and I think it's not really a good reason to base a purchase decision on for anyone until Apple changes that " view one time only in a 24 hour period "

For me it's not even that I want to view a rental multiple times. I want to view it once, and 24 hours isn't enough to do that most days. We usually start watching a movie one night, get through about half, and finish the next night. With Apple's limitation the movie would expire about the time we sit down to finish the movie. Sometimes it takes us 3 sittings. I think the movies are overpriced anyway. $4-5 for a HD movie rental is about twice what it should be.

There is no other compelling reason for me to get one.

Got 160gb last week, so far so good. Just another week till v2 update :)

Ordered a 40GB refurb about a month and a half before MW. When it arrived it was a brand new unit!!!!!

Great job Apple!!!

I Caved

Bought a refurb 40 GB on Saturday. It was delivered yesterday. I was very surprised that the quality was so good. I just wish there was a way to stream the network on demand shows. Is there a way to add .avi files to itunes?

You can view as many times as you want in the 24 hour period, not just once.

Yes and no........

You can add a Quicktime reference file of your AVI file into iTunes and then access it via iTunes and Front Row on all your Macs but Apple TV won't see it or play it still unless you hack it. The simplest way is to use iSquint set for AppleTv and High quality. It will convert the file to MP4 H.264 in a very short order. Then add that file into iTunes and done.

Got mine yesterday. Very much impressed. Synched with my iMac very quickly and I was viewing videos and listening to music is short order. Very slick product. Can't wait for Take 2!

I picked up the 40 gig last night from my local Apple Store. I am impressed so far. I am just streaming for now. I can't wait until Take 2, I really like the rental idea. Movies are cheaper then blockbuster and I don't have to go out to get the movie or remember to return the damn thing!

Oh sidebar, last night was the first time I had stepped foot into an Apple Store. I was very impressed. Technology everywhere, bright, clean and friendly staff.

I picked up the 160gb model last week. I love it!
We happened to be having family over for dinner the night after I bought it and my girlfriend and I set up a slideshow of a recent trip we took to Europe. Everyone was quite impressed.

I'm getting antsy for the take 2 update though!
