Bought the cheapest one for $500. Gone is the 8gb dilemma.
I figure if I really like it I can upgrade. These will sell.

I would get the 512 gb storage optionWill the base M4 mini with 1TB SSD be good for 4K editing in Final Cut in your opinion?
I guess Apple is getting decent orders. Mine was ordered this morning and is due to arrive Friday. New preorders are now arriving mid-November.I have a 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro 32/1TB. I was thinking about waiting for the M4 Mac Studio, but think I may trade in my MacBook Pro for the new Mini M4 Pro 24/1TB. I was using the MBP for open source software development but I retired so the Mac Mini should be more than I need.
Edit: ordered. Apple gave me $1055 trade-in for my MBP, so my net cost with 1TB storage upgrade is ~$600
Just placed an order for m4 24gb 512gbGot the base model and added 10GbE for $90 more. $589 is a steal.
I have M2 8/512. I would like 16 GB, but all is working fine. One year old mini. I think I'll skip this one.
You can almost certainly get a USB-C 10Gb ethernet adapter for it. That's how I'm approaching it.Just placed an order for m4 24gb 512gb
I hope I don’t regret not getting this 10GBE upgrade in the future
Oh so no big deal ?You can almost certainly get a USB-C 10Gb ethernet adapter for it. That's how I'm approaching it.
I only have Gigabit switches anyway, and they have served me more than well enough.
Even those hubs like caldiget get hot ?Well, the third party Thunderbolt 10GigE solutions often get quite hot, and sometimes can be flaky. And they aren't exactly cheap either. Then again, if you don't need it, you don't need it.
I'm going through the same dilemma.
Caldigit hubs often get hot. Depends on the model and how it's used, but some of them have been known to burn themselves out actually.Even those hubs like caldiget get hot ?
The other option is an 2.5GigE Ethernet adapter. They are way less expensive than the 10GigE adapters, as are the switches, and they supposedly don't get as hot usually. Furthermore, home internet gateways generally don't do 10GigE anyway, at least in North America. They max out at 2.5GigE.Oh so no big deal ?
If I need 10gb ethernet in the future I’ll just get a thunderbolt hub with that adapter built in or just the adapter
I'd say for the vast majority of users, the 10GigE is probably money spent unwisely. OK, so it's not a lot at $100, but for me there are better things I can use that money for to enjoy (and I'm retired so I think about that more carefully). The other option is an 2.5GigE Ethernet adapter. The main problem is you "waste" a USB port with a third party Ethernet adapter (and potentially there are still flakiness issues with some models).
