I have a 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro 32/1TB. I was thinking about waiting for the M4 Mac Studio, but think I may trade in my MacBook Pro for the new Mini M4 Pro 24/1TB. I was using the MBP for open source software development but I retired so the Mac Mini should be more than I need.

Edit: ordered. Apple gave me $1055 trade-in for my MBP, so my net cost with 1TB storage upgrade is ~$600

I have an M2 Pro from last year, was looking at the M4 version and researching. I love the new smaller footprint. Not happy with the $100 price increase on the M4 Pro version though. But the normal M4 version is not a huge upgrade over the M2 Pro & the GPU in M2 Pro is way faster than M4 base. so still thinking about it but may wait until next version. Might just do the USB-C Touchpad & Keyboard this year.

I have M2 8/512. I would like 16 GB, but all is working fine. One year old mini. I think I'll skip this one.

I wonder how long it will take for them to pop up in the Refurb store? I'm definitely getting one but not really in a hurry, so might wait a bit. If I remember correctly, it didn't take too long for the M2s to show up refurbished.

I preordered the M4 Pro model. I’ve been using a M1 Pro MacBook Pro as a desktop and really don’t use it for travel anymore since getting an M4 iPad Pro. So, I traded it in and that will pay for a good chunk of The Mini.

I guess Apple is getting decent orders. Mine was ordered this morning and is due to arrive Friday. New preorders are now arriving mid-November.

Just placed an order for m4 24gb 512gb
I hope I don’t regret not getting this 10GBE upgrade in the future
You can almost certainly get a USB-C 10Gb ethernet adapter for it. That's how I'm approaching it.

I only have Gigabit switches anyway, and they have served me more than well enough.

Oh so no big deal ?
If I need 10gb ethernet in the future I’ll just get a thunderbolt hub with that adapter built in or just the adapter

Well, the third party Thunderbolt 10GigE solutions often get quite hot, and sometimes can be flaky. And they aren't exactly cheap either. Then again, if you don't need it, you don't need it.

I'm going through the same dilemma.

Even those hubs like caldiget get hot ?

Pretty sure I am grabbing a base model, with student discount and trading in an old iPhone 13 Pro I have laying around it is only going to cost me $160 bucks which is insane.

The other option is an 2.5GigE Ethernet adapter. They are way less expensive than the 10GigE adapters, as are the switches, and they supposedly don't get as hot usually. Furthermore, home internet gateways generally don't do 10GigE anyway, at least in North America. They max out at 2.5GigE.

The main problem is you "waste" a USB port with a third party Ethernet adapter (and potentially there are still flakiness issues with some models).

I'd say for the vast majority of users, the 10GigE is probably money spent unwisely. OK, so it's not a lot at $100, but for me there are better things I can use that money for to enjoy (and I'm retired so I think about that more carefully).

As per usual, my dad, at 96, bought one of the first off the line. Base model. First time in 50 years he bought the base model :) He makes most Apple Fanboys pale in comparison :) He is going to use it to power this art. Which he invented, designed and built and installed. A mini has been powering it for the last 12 years or so. https://subliminaryartworks.com/2021/02/18/la-union-station-a-train/

Counterpoint, if you use a NAS you definitely want 10GbE. The switches are cheap now, makes no sense to use 1GbE. I mean even cable modems routinely do 2000 Mbps (if you pay for it), so for that and future proofing I'd recommend 10 GbE if you're an enthusiast or use the computer for work.
