I became tired of mds_stores and mdworker churning my HDD for long periods of time after almost every reboot rebuilding Spotlight's index files, at times slowing up things I really cared about. Almost like OS X's version of what AV software does to Windows systems. I don't use Spotlight other than in Mail (only because OS X forces that on me), which is probably in the "old dog new tricks" category of problem.
