Under normal conditions MacOS is extremely good at keeping a boatload of windows and tabs open. I regularly had a ton of windows tabs open across 4 different browsers on my 16GB M1 Pro and still ran VMs without any issues.
The problem is...I have only 8GB RAM 😭 because Apple told me it counts twice as much! 🤣

That said, to be fair, it is pretty good for 8GB. I will spend what's needed to get the right config on my next Mac.

I used an 13" M1 Base with 16GB as my main machine until 4 months ago. Was still going strong, but upgraded recently to 14" M4 Pro to add an additional screen and get Thunderbolt 5. Otherwise, the M1 was running great and still had decent battery life.
Same for me. 2020 M1 13in MBP (TouchBar) with 16GB and 1TB was my main. Upgraded to the 14in M4 Pro with 48GB and 2TB a couple months ago. There was nothing particularly wrong with the 13in. Performance wise it was still fast for general usage and the battery life was still an absolute monster but the daily experience felt very dated. The TouchBar was obsolete and screen size just felt too small when using it on the go. The 14in screen feels perfect in comparison plus I went with the NanoTexture display which has been a huge improvement. I know a lot of the updates I'm experiencing have been around since the M1 Pro/Max revision MBPs but having a much better display, SD Card reader and more ports has made using the MBP an absolute joy again.

M1 iMac, 512GB, 16 gb ram. I am a video producer and editor. I was tempted by the m4 mini, but my machine is still SO good for video. I typically edit multicam clips with 2-5 angles of 4k footage.

It doesn’t skip a beat. I had one project recently with 11 4K camera angles that it couldn’t preview all angles simultaneously. But that’s a rare case for me and not worth the upgrade.

Staying here until a new monitor comes out and I move to a studio in a couple years.

Yes, M1 Air 8/8 with 16GB. Still works great. I may pick up an M4 Air when it is launched but could also wait for M5.

Oh yeah, that could get tight, but there still might be something dragging you back. I had a survive on a loaner 13" OG 8GB M1 MBP for a short period of time and it "just worked" to my utter amazement.

Ever since Silicon, unless I'm doing something intense, every time I have a speed bump and think it's RAM related, I always end up discovering that it was something else.

I bought a MacBook Air 💻 M1 over a year ago. It’s been great, the best laptop I’ve owned by far.

M1 Max 24GPU MacBook Pro 16" 32GB 1TB

Super happy with it. Mostly for Serif Affinity Creative Suite and the usual stuff.

16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro, 32GB, 2TB. I run my business as a book designer using it. Massive projects, often involving hundreds if not thousands of assets and hundreds of pages. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Bridge all day long, back and forth. Works great. I run into some memory pressure issues from time to time, but it's not existential. I'll get around to upgrading to something with more memory eventually, when I've fully amortized this machine.

I wonder about people who are constantly upgrading with every. new. model.

Same here, M1StudioMax32 and still barely push it to its limits (audio/video).
I tend to be a "hold it till it's no longer feasibly supported by OS" user, so I can't see upgrading this in this decade?
fingers crossed 👍

Just to point out something here -- the longevity of these Apple Silicon machines also I think reflects really well on macOS itself. When you think about it, every new Mac you've ever bought probably feels very fast out of the box. They only "slow down" because subsequent versions of the system (and other) software get more demanding to run over time and they struggle to keep up.

I wonder if Apple's now having a perfect vertical between hardware and software, without Intel in the way, is letting them put out more advanced versions of macOS that also run well on these M1 machines.
Good observation. I’ve noticed that *every time* I’ve experienced a slowdown / performance degradation on my M1 Max MBP it’s correlated with low free SSD space. I simply delete files from the downloads and LLM model folders and empty trash and performance reverts to my day 1 experience. Apple seriously overachieved with the M1 and Apple Silicon in general.

M1 Pro MBP 14" for me. I've used it for Adobe CC, DaVinci Resolve, Ableton Live, light Fusion360. It's holding up just fine, and has made me realize I may be able to switch to MBA for my next machine.

Still use an refurb 16GB/512 GB M1 MacBook Air as my daily driver. Battery life has taken a hit (only lasts about 6 hours now), but other than that no complaints whatsoever. Selling my final Intel-based MacBook Air for the M1 version was a good decision. I've been considering getting a M4 Pro Mac Mini for the occasional 4K rendering I need to do, but that would merely be a nice-to-have rather than a necessity.

It's not just Apple. I think the CPUs in general are finally "fast enough". My Linux box has a CPU about the same speed as an M1 and that has no performance problems either. It has 16 GB RAM which never seems to be in short supply. The big difference is storage, 1.5 TB on two internal drives vs the 256 GB on the Air. But the Air is portable and the desktop is not, which is fine.

It's interesting that in PC land the mini-PCs are the hot movers if you are not an extreme gamer. Like Apple's M series AMD in particular has pretty good integrated graphics now. My Linux box is using the integrated graphics and I have no complaints. It is also a 2020 chip like the M1, but on the 7 nm TSMC process. I may never need another tower case given many of the mini-PCs have dual NVME slots and I don't need the DVD drive very much any more.

I just use my M1 14" as a daily driver. I haven't tried anything else. For me it's internet, multimedia (plex/youtube/netflix) and really that's about it. Have to admit I've been looking for a reason to upgrade and can't. I even have a $600 credit with apple and can't find a reason to get rid of the thing. I can't tell if I'm just old now and not longer always needing the new new or what. How is yours treating you or if you've traded in how's the new unit. Was it worth it or no real reason to upgrade?
Yup, still got mine. Works well, and upgraded it to max with 1Tb and whatever the core upgrades were. I’ve got a store credit too from my iPhone 14 Pro Max and will (eventually) use it up on Apple One subscriptions, the occasional movie rental and not much else!

I have a bunch of newer Mac's, but my portable is still a 16" MBP M1 Pro and it is rocking it and running like nobodies business.

My M1 iPad Air is still running great. In fact with the combo of the Magic Keyboard and External Monitor support, it has become my main computer. I even Remote Desktop into my Windows Machine and run it as a Windows Laptop at times. No issues at all!

Running an M1 Air with 16 gigs and the thermal pad mod. The CPU is plenty fast enough, and the GPU can cope with light gaming. Coolest running laptop I've ever used, and no jet engine noises. Also the first computer I've ever owned that hasn't started to feel slow. The only bottleneck is 16 gigs of RAM; I'd like a lot more.

Maybe I'll upgrade when the Pros go OLED.

My cousin is still rocking his M1 Pro base model MBP 14". He has it mostly hooked up to a thunderbolt dock with external monitor & storage, and unplugs it when he needs to be on the go. We talked about the new MBP's when they came out, and he says for his usage he still has no reason to upgrade.

MacBook Pro M1 max 64gb 2T.

Otherwise no problem than too small capacity. + Sequoia ****ed up Spotlight

I’d love to have 128gb and 8T but it takes 8k gold here.

Two of them, I have an M1 Max 14" MBP and my wife has an M1 Pro 16" MBP. Still great machines, no complaints so far and I don't see any need to upgrade for years to come.

My wife has a base M1 Air and it's doing really well. Nice machine, built for long.
