Or we are getting old and don't understand anymore what teenagers do so easily. It's something I have come to notice, I guess.

Cheers

Normally I would agree but even my daughter doesn't care for it. She's uses Spotify because she finds it easier. I do like Cesium. Particularly because it shows me much easier what's local and what's cloud based.

I hate how the cover doesn't automatically show when you start a song. I also miss being able to double tap the cover to see the rest of the songs on the album/playlist. Also, what happened to being able to just tap the album cover to show the rating?

I like the ability to queue up songs, but it's frustratingly slow. You have to wait for the pop-up dialog to disappear before you can do anything else!

It's just an overcomplicated mess, and annoyingly, inconsistent with iTunes (which is supposed to be its parent!)

Since Apple decided in the Music app to always list albums in reverse chronological order, I create playlists with an artists' albums in the right order - oldest first - and then just use these playlists (I like to listen to an artist's catalogue, usually).

I am not interested in Apple Music, or Match, I just want to play my playlists!

I thought this was just me. It drives me batty that there isn't a toggle to sort albums in order from oldest up or newest back.

Based on another user's recommendation here I downloaded the Cesium app and use that exclusively for playing music now. It functions almost exactly like the old Music app used to. Well worth the couple bucks if you play music on your phone a lot, IMO.

Thanks for the tip. Cesium is exactly what I want. "Dear Apple, see how simple this can be?"

Huh. Didn't know that, but that does explain a lot about how it looks.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the music app pre-iOS 9. Why Apple would decide to hand over it's design to the people who are responsible for one of the least liked pieces of Apple software....I dunno. I'm praying they reverse course on that.

Who knows? I suspect the software teams have become a bit fragmented within Apple with tvOS, WatchOS, OSX and iOS and Services teams working separately to each other. This would explain the declining software quality.

Hope they start integrating better together when the Spaceship Campus is ready.

I don't want Apple Music, I don't want Connect, I don't want Match, I don't want to see what I've bought that is in the cloud. I just want to put music on my phone and play it. For that the app is way too convoluted.
Settings -> Music -> Show Apple Music -> Off -> iCloud Music Library -> Off

Settings -> General -> Restrictions -> Apple Music Connect -> Off

Can Cesium play from sources other than the music library, say if I wanted all of my music in Dropbox or OneDrive?
I believe that it's only able to play music from the music library on the phone/iCloud. I don't see anywhere in the app where you can select another file source.

As I understand it, Cesium is merely an interface. All it does is act a front end for the music.app. If you play something in Cesium and switch over to the music app, it will be playing the same thing. So whatever the music.app can access, Cesium can.

I find it easier to use if I plug my iPhone into my Toyota and navigate via the on screen menus in the car instead.

I don't get the complaints about it being too complicated. I took 10 minutes to explore the app when it was released and find myself having no issues related to it being too complicated. I don't know if that's because I took the time to learn the new app or if it's just simply how I use the app vs. how others use it. Probably both. Regardless, I don't find it "too complicated".

I do think it's too busy. I'd like to see separate apps for the radio service and the music player. It just feels like too much is crammed into one app now. For the most part, it suits my needs quite nicely. And "my needs" are primarily playlists.

That's what I've done myself. So much nicer with a dedicated playlist button and just three buttons in total.

the "For You" section is ridiculous and doesnt follow any design or usability pattern i can think of. its a endless list of cluttered mess thrown together that makes no sense at all

also why isnt the "add for offline listening" or whatever button removed when u already made the song available for offline listening? confusing

oh and ugh i have iTunes Match and used the Apple Music trial, now i have all those songs i made available for offline listening still in my iTunes MATCH library even with AM disabled. stupid, its not like i can play them anyway

I think it is complex, and it requires some time. But not badly made for the most part, in terms of design. I find it easier to use and manage than Spotify. For being a cook-era software, it is not that bad.
However, it is too buggy and battery hungry

While I do find it's generally a step back from before, to play my own music it still does the job for me.

I disabled Connect, so that's one less icon in the bottom row.

I'm in the same position as you, but after my trial ended all of the songs made available for offline listening disappeared. Silly question, but have you disabled Apple Music in the settings?

I get the feeling apple want users to use Apple Music vs their own music.
most of my songs are in playlists now.
That alleviates the frustration of my wife's music from being heard.
I would like the apple to play my music without fishing for it.

At the moment, Cs is iTunes only, but Dropbox etc. is on the list for exploration. Haven't seen an app yet that accommodates iTunes plus other sources, so expecting there to be some significant challenges with that...

Is there a way to add in the ability to play an entire artists catalog in chronological order?

Got ya covered! Swiping left-to-right on any track collection (like an Artist, or composer, playlist, whatever) will reveal the Collection Control options. The left icon will play all tracks in the collection. For an artist it will do this by album according to how artist albums are set to be sorted (chronologically up or down, or alphabetically).

So basically, ensure you have artist albums set to sort the way you prefer, swipe and tap! :)
