Unless you need the tactile feedback of physical keys, the functionality is available on Touch Bar with a couple clicks in SystemPrefs->Keyboard to change the defaults to show either expanded control strip or Fn keys.

Plus you retain launchpad key and the keyboard backlight controls -- instead of having to go to control center.

I wasn't aware of this, but I didn't have it for that long. This is good to know, although I definitely do prefer the tactile feedback. Thanks for this though! This will make the 16" easier.

On both can you launch ControlCenter with a trackpad swipe-down, similar to how you launch NotificationCenter with a trackpad left to right swipe?

On the Air, can you reassign the LaunchPad key to launch ControlCenter?

I’m currently bouncing between a M1 MBA & Pro at the moment (both 16GB/1TB). Really hard to decide which one I prefer! Prefer the design, weight and wedge of the MBA (especially for typing), but agree with the others that the MBP has a nicer keyboard. MBA is kinda mushy to type on compared to the MBP (although still an excellent keyboard, it’s just slightly different to the MBP). Hated touch bar, but now I’ve added BetterTouchTool it’s quite useful having quick access to app and my calendar appointments always on show. Battery life is great on both, but on MBP it’s so good I can literally forget about the charger for days. On the MBA it’ll do a solid day and a half, possibly 2 days.
I've been doing the exact same with same config and am having a hard time deciding which I like better. I need to decide quick as my trade-in window already expired once lol. I did notice one thing though. I ran Blackmagic disk speed test and the Air's ssd is actually performing better than the Pro's. I'm not sure why. Can you test this on yours and see if you get the same results?
I noticed in the system information that the Air's drive has a higher revision than the Pro's drive. I kind of thought they would be the same considering everything else.

Had to change my vote to undecided as I am returning both of my M1’s due to Bluetooth niggles and sleep wake issues with my external monitor

And what now, if you send both devices back?
no Mac anymore?

Oh not at all
I still run a hack, and we have a 2016 MBP and an M1 MBA here

macOS galore around here still & always..

I've decided that I can't primarily go M1 personally yet, so I'm going to keep my eyes open for a sub $600 price on an M1 Mini base model over the months ahead and grab one to keep testing/trying in parallel to my main setup.

After all of my waffling, I returned the MBP (16GB/1TB) and Air(8GB/512GB) I had and picked up an Air with 16GB and 1TB of storage. I decided the extras you get with the Pro wasn't worth the extra money, but I still wanted the 1TB of storage. The local Apple stores only stocked the model I bought so I went with that – after all no one has ever said, "I wish I had less RAM."

The air is my choice also. The extras aren't worth it. Im prob going with 16gb 512 air (currently have 8gb 512gb)

I’m really tempted to pick up a mbp 16/1tb locally cuz I’m in desperate need of a computer but really want to hold out for the 14” if it comes. I really don’t want to get into buying and then selling. Done it for a long time but just want something and keep.

I know it’s tempting to wait for the next generation. Performance wise these current M1 are killers !

If you really need the extra oomph for work, chill for 6-9 months.

If you want the redesigned model (I do), no option but waiting

For me, its too good not to have. The benefits over intel - esp if your last mbp had "the bad keyboard" - its soo nice using a fast, silent, cool, long battery life laptop with a great keyboard.

Im also interested in the 14" but ill get exactly what I want now incase the 14" for some reason doesn't appeal to me - price, design or whatever .... and I could wait for the 14" v2 in 2022 or a refurbished one to save some cash. It seems unlikely that the performance of the 14" for the AVERAGE user will that much better in the 14". The performance from intel to M1 is the big jump. The screen will prob the main change upcoming MacBooks.

Upgraded from an early 2015 13" rMBP (3.1GHz i7, 16GB, 512GB) to a MBA (M1 8 core CPU, 8 core GPU, 16GB, 1TB) and it's great.

I just checked the current poll results and I am not surprised that the MBA 16GM RAM is leading the way. I knew before checking which one was going to be leading. The MR 'hardcore ways buying more membership' is consistent. :D

Isn’t the MBA 16GB winning?

One of my local Apple stores finally had a space gray base MBA in stock yesterday that I was able to pickup, and I must say that I’m impressed. Sold my 2018 IPP 12.9, and now the M1 will be my portable option with a lot more capability. I have an Intel Mac Mini as my desktop for heavier workloads along with it being able to run multiple monitors and vms for Windows 10 and those programs that don’t have Mac equivalents.

I've realized that I actually prefer the typing experience and chunky build of the MBP. The MBA is totally fine too, I'd be pretty happy with either machine.

It's about time you got the M1. Congrats. :)

Currently have the same rMBP 2015 configurations, and also thinking about to order the M1 MBA with the same specs.
Just wanted to ask if you experienced any throttling issues? And if yes, would you say it is still much smoother and faster than rMBP?

Just picked up the M1 MBP, however, will have to return it due to defected screen. I edit the videos in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and just can't help myself as I'm still considering M1 MBA
