If you are in the US the T-Mobile deal from Apple looks solid. $200 back and no contract at all. Can cancel as soon as your rebate arrives.

You'd still need to pay for activation and maybe a month or two service. You'd probably only save $100 or less after everything. My cellphone's with AT&T so I checked out T-Mobile's tablet only postpaid plans. It's $60/mo for both Essentials and Magenta, $75 for Magenta MAX.

Doesn't seem like it's worth all the hassle. I'm happy enough to just use my Amazon Prime rewards and gift cards for the iPad.

Plus, the 12.9 1TB 5G was backordered to July on Apple website when I woke up (6:30) while Amazon still had both colors available for order. I've got hope I can get my Amazon order first half of June. :)

Side note: It's a good thing this forum has Save Draft. Tab reloaded after I checked out T-Mobile's website for data-only plans.

Average Joe, by virtue of name, is not spending well above-average for the iPad Pro.

The average would be the iPad Air. It's between the iPad and iPad Pro in price and capability. It probably sells the best.

Nobody is arguing that more RAM isn't better. But most people don't understand or care. Their slow iPad loads things way faster than their crappy Dell at work.

I am an average Joe, and I am happy with my iPad Air (first generation from 2013, of course).
And indeed, my iPad loads things faster than my crappy Dell at work (still using HDD, lol).

Truer words have never been spoken. I’d much rather complete and have done many tasks on my iPad Air (soon to be Pro) than my crappy Dell!

Well I'd rather have them done on my Surface Pro than any iPad - no matter how much RAM it has, it runs an OS that can't take full advantage of the hardware

Easy strategy and it's only a few days left. I wait for WWDC to decide. Maybe Apple show me a reason for 16GB RAM. If they give me features I miss compared to macOS, I will order on the same day. If not, I'll be happy for another 1 or 2 years with my iPP 2018. Even when ordering in early June, iPad 2021 is there on iPadOS 15 release day. iPadOS 14.x is no reason for me using more than 4GB RAM with my current iPad. It's all about the software.

I have the 2018 iPad pro with 6GB of RAM (1TB version) and the problem is, iPadOS is unpredictable in term of app reloading. 6GB of ram should be enough to hold most apps/tabs long enough, but sometimes its reload for no reasons after a short period of time. on my iMac with only 8GB of RAM, I can have 15 Safari tabs and some apps opens, and it never reloads unless I really do some demanding tasks so I just expect no more than no reloads at all with the 16GB ram version of the iPad.

I want iPadOS to offer new settings (per app, possibly) where you can toggle whether an app is a priority for multitasking and for staying resident in memory. The default would be it’s not, but you could go and toggle the apps (Safari, spreadsheet app, etc) where you definitely do NOT want it ever taken out of memory (unless you kill it yourself). This would allow the user to gain the benefit of the RAM by allowing the user to determine the priority targets for this behavior, without the OS either having to try to guess which apps you care the most about, or worse, trying to do it to everything.

I suppose no more constant closing of apps in the background with the 16 GB of RAM. Apps will probably not have to be reloaded anymore.

So not just "pro" users will benefit from it.
The iPad's performance with ram, up until this iPad Pro, has been great, most people don't need that much ram, including professionals. Its funny how people say that much ram is suddenly needed regardless of use case.

I have used a number of iPads, as my wife as a non-pro, I have an old pro, and now the new machine and all three run great

In the absence of swap, I agree. I would prefer adding swap though. Swap doesn’t appear to be an issue for performance and battery life as we’ve already seen on the MacBooks. SSD longevity isn’t too much of an issue.

Low RAM and no swap has been one of my annoyances with iOS devices. I just expected Apple to always be stingy on that front.

Whenever I need to fill out a web form and have to use another webpage or app for reference, I either use a computer to fill out the form or grab a second iPad for reference because I don’t trust iOS to not reload the web form (thereby losing all my input) if I switch to a different tab/app. I’ve been working around the iPad’s quirks but I’m happy for it to be less of an issue.

With that said, iOS 12 was very good at managing RAM. I barely got any reloads with that on the 4GB RAM 2017 Pro. 13 was bad, though.

I bought the 2021 with 1TB because I’ve wanted 1TB storage since 2018. Well, wanted it even before then but it wasn’t an option. However I am glad the 1TB+ configs come with more RAM. This is pretty much just from Safari browsing. Setting up as new so I haven’t installed most of my apps yet.

In a van down by the river
Not everyone uses the iPad in the same way much less have a need for the same spec iPad. The issue about app reloading is software based. Saying the average Joe needs 16GB of RAM dismisses the OS problem in favor of spending money on something one may not have need of. That doesn't seem logical to me.

As much as I think it's neat, I always chuckle because on all my tablets, regardless to specs I close every application as soon as I'm done using it, I never multitask. Have no idea why, just my own personal quirk. I hate having apps idle in the background, even if they're not "technically" using resources, they still kinda are.

Same for me. Only the most regularly used are left alone, rest are used and closed. Particularly Safari, since I tend to have a few tabs.
