Why would you create 6 models instead of 3 and allow tethering from your iPhone? It seems having another device with a 3g option is redundant. This is almost making me think about getting a regular dumb cell phone, and an iPad with 3g.

Because I don't have an iPhone, and I'm tired of going to the library to jack signal. Being broke does that to you. I look forward to the 3G model
Besides, what if you don't have an iPhone or anything to tether to?

I think the majority of the future iPad owners will be iPhone owners too.

exactly what i'm gonna do. i'm out of contract with at&t, and will give them the finger this month.

Same reason Microsoft had the "core" 360, and the "pro" version they want to try and appease a wider audience and then eventually they will convert everyone else.

I don't own an Iphone and never will until they work legally on the Verizon 3g network.
There are plenty of people who want Iphones but don't have them.

Forget tethering. If I am using an iPad outside of WiFi range, I don't want to be dependent on another device. The idea is to have a single device that can do everything.
why not 6 models? It's not some terribly complicated rubric where you have to consider screen type or product material or processor speed.

$99 for iPhone 3G plus 2 year contract is a bigger pill to swallow than $499 plus $15-30 per month on a month by month basis.

I don't think of it as 6 models, but rather 3 with a 3G option. It's like you choose vanilla, cherry, or chocolate, and then if you want spinkles you can add those too.
At any rate if it wasn't 6 models then people would be whining that Apple is only letting people with the most expensive models get 3G. Apple's approach is much more egalitarian and lets people buy the options that fit their own needs.

I wonder what amounts of each model are being produced.
My guess is the $499 option is going to be the most popular by far. The middle option probably the least, as people will either go cheap or all out.

Don't mind 6 models, just wish they started at 32g and ended up at 128gig
