Actually people like choice but at the same time too much choice causes confusion. I remember a retail study once that about 7 choices was the best. Too many more and people couldn't decide and several less and people didn't feel like they could meet their needs. Looks like Apple has come up with about the best number of choices.

Personally, I was thrilled that they offered WiFi only models!

I was imagining having to be saddled with yet another 3G contract just to experience the iPad.

I'm not sure about the 6 models, especially the 3 different HD sizes.

Apple always seems to charge a higher premium for storage space compared to other flash drive manufacturers.

I wonder if apple decided just to ship and produce the ipad with only a standard hard drive size (32 gb for example) for both the wireless and 3g versions, would the production cost and the retail price of the ipad be reduced. Compared to producing the sizes of hard drive?

There are no contracts for the iPad in the US. It's month to month for $15 (250Mb) or $30 (unlimited). Where have you been?

Another uncontracted thirty bucks a month wasn't part of my iPad dream either...

On most Apple products the cheapest one has the lowest % profit margin and they make more for every step up. So they make a $500 iPad to hit a magic price point but they don't actually want too many people to buy it.

Luckily people think "well for $100 more I can have 32GB", and a while later they think "well for $100 more I can have 64GB". Basically people upsell themselves without the need for any high pressure salesman.

The iPod nano used to be like that at 1, 2, and 4 GB, with the shuffle as the entry point.

Go $15 (or not at all) and cut it off the months you don't need or won't to use it. You would still have GPS that you don't get on th. wi-fi.

That's the most inane thing said about the iPad yet. Which is impressive considering all the female hygiene product "jokes". Congratulations!

Jobs himself basically said as much during the introduction event. Something along the lines of, (paraphrasing) "Because of the millions of iPhone and iPod touch users out there, there will be millions of users who already know how to use the iPad."

To my interpretation, that is implying that due to their familiarity with the user interface, Apple is hoping that those millions of iPhone and iPod touch users will be significantly more likely to also purchase an iPad.

Yes, people who have iPhones AND iPod touches will be likely to buy one. People who own other Macs will as well. The person who said "the majority of iPad owners will be iPhone owners as well" was, as I recall, saying that they should be able to tether the two because they are already paying for 3G data. Fact is that it will likely be a small percentage of iPhone owners with an iPad, compared to all iPad owners - I'd hazard that iPod touch owners will be the biggest conversion group as there are more of them total and many of them might like to have an iPhone OS device with 3G but not want to switch phone service to AT&T.

And, what Jobs was implying with that statement, imo, was more an explanation of why they were using the iPhone OS - it works well, it's successful enough that millions of people have used it, so why wouldn't we expand on that instead of reinventing the touch OS wheel (by modifying OSX to have a touch interface).
