All of the Apple pro notebooks I've ever owned have had problems. It's kind of disappointing and I don't have time to return stuff to Apple all the time even though I have Applecare. My current MBP's top won't close and I have to run the fan extension at max or it cooks my hands. My PBG4, which my wife still uses, has a busted trackpad and the power cable works about half the time. My TiBook before that had a motherboard swap and other power supply issues. I have to say my uncle's two iBooks and current MacBook seem more reliable.

girls with MBPs are awesome.:D

Really I love mine. Any issues I have are NOT due to the MBP. The the OP, any optical drive would be third party. Personally I would be ok not paying the extra money for a blu ray as I don't see it is all that important. Once the HD wars are over maybe, but really to me a standard DVD is a great quality already.

the wifi on my MBP has been nothing but stellar. Certainly better than my wife's Fujitsu laptop(it loses signal randomly from 3 feet away) or my last windows laptop. I have yet to have any problems with it and i'm willing to bet neither have most people which would explain why you don't see people posting how good their wifi is.

so i should buy a thinkpad instead of a mbp...cause the (keyboards suck, wifi sucks, casing sucks, heating sucks, life in general sucks?)

You've made a lot of generalizations there. I think you need to remember that a lot of people will not have any problems with their notebooks. The ones who do (the minority) are more likely to seek an outlet for complaint, and MR is a good place for attracting that kind of attention.

I think if you don't care about OS X, then by all means, get yourself a Thinkpad. If it does matter to you however, then I think you know what you should do. Either way, it's your money and your decision should be one you're happy with. Don't let any of us (including me) tell you what to do with your money.

well let me ask then...who here actually owned a macbook pro for a while and does alot of typing and usage and has had zero or minor issues after prolong usage?

also, is 17 inch too much? i wouldn't mind getting the 15 inch as it seems it would be big enough for me. and also is the apple careplan really worth it? i'm cautious of any "extended warranties."

and is glossy screen a good thing to get?

17" is too big for my taste.

Applecare is a waste IMO.

I had one issue with my first one but now its golden I like the keyboard better then anyothers, the casing is amazingly beautiful (abet not all that "strong"), heating? meh if you are playing games on your lap yeah it's a bit hot otherwise it is fine. I love mine. However you don't sound like you particularly want one.

i do want one...for like the past two years or so. i just a very self conscious buyer...

I have an SR mbp bought 5 days after they were released.
I type quite a lot on my mbp because most of my work is textual in nature (ie, reports and some presentations). Even though I use an external keyboard for most of my heavy typing, the mbp keyboard is fine for extended typing sessions. It's quite comfortable for a notebook computer and is surprisingly good (in my opinion).

Applecare is a waste because you're likely to be throwing your money down the toilet with it. Instead, check to see if the credit card you're buying with offers free extended warranty coverage. Mine did and that's a much better deal (as in zero dollars).

I have a matte screen and I highly recommend it. No glare, easy to see of off and beautiful to look at all the same. However, you ought to make the decision for yourself by looking at both side-by-side in a store. Check the reflections on both by shining your cell phone's backlight onto both screens. This will give you a good idea as to the glare I'm referring to.

i'd like to add that the thinkpad I have at home absolutely kills my MBP in terms of wi-fi reception.

I can sit in my kitchen on a neighbor's network (i dont even know who) and surf the web with decent speeds. I cant even see the same network with the MBP. plus studying with my friends in their apt, they can get the complex's network while I see it from time to time but I can never connect to it.

Um, no. You can choose from Windows, Linux, Solaris, BSD, whatever you want. As a matter of fact, IBM/Lenovo have long been known to have some of the best Linux support of any manufacturer. I switched from a Thinkpad running Linux to a MacBook running OS X & I can't wait until I can switch back again.

Run the other operating systems and you're stuck with no selection of commercial applications; I moved to Mac so I wouldn't have to be reliant on opensource software that is maintained at the 'desire' of the programmer. I'm not going to sit around and put up with the half-assed quality which GIMP is, just to get the fuzzy feel goods of knowing I'm using 'teh opensource'.

Oh, and if you wondered, yes, I tried to contribute to GIMP, but given its filled to the brim with arrogant *******s who are unwilling to consider the most minor of improvements to the GUI, I threw out 3 weeks of GUI redesign, and swore never to help those band of ungrateful *******s ever again.

I have had both macbooks and MBP's from my first 1.83MBP. The reception I found was slightly bad on the original MBP and my 17" 2.16MBP was defiantly poor in contrast to my MB. However with the last 2 17" MBP's the signal has been on par to my mother in laws pre SR MB. I love the screen real estate and have seen a vast improvement in signal.

so i should buy this instead: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=329576204C9E42289967E79E0E7C9A2D
Thinkpad X series != comparable to MBP. If you're not specifically in the market for an ultraportable (which you're obviously not if you were looking at a MBP) then you should look at the Thinkpad T series first, as they are more comparable to the MBP in terms of form factor, specifications, etc.

Firstly I should point out that Solaris is a commercial OS with commercial support. As for that matter are several Linux distributions - Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Novell Linux Desktop, etc. Secondly, it is perfectly possible to run many commercial applications on these 'other operating systems'. Many popular modern commercial applications now ship with official Linux support, including more games than support OS X! And finally, you really are presenting a hugely biased & spiteful view of OSS & anybody who is new to OSS should completely ignore what you have said & should read about it from more reputable sources.

As I said, you obviously failed to fully understand & appreciate how the world of OSS works, refused to appreciate other peoples' opinions & came out of the affair spiteful & reliant on profanities to make your point.

I have photoshop CS2 running on wine. everything works. getting CS3 to work is up next

I enjoy the negative posts to be honest as long as they are insightful and mature.

Some will get mad whenever negative things are posted and well, they just need to get over it as no Apple product will ever be perfect

But, to be fair...some threads saying things like "this sucks" and that is it...well, those posters deserve whatever they get

Using a compatibility layer; sorry, I want native applications or nothing. If you're going to use Windows native applications on Linux, you might as well use Windows and done with it. Using Windows native applications on Linux is as stupid as purchasing a MacBook and only running Windows on it (removing Mac OS X completely).

Are you trying to say that having the best of both worlds is somehow worse than having the best of only one world?

Did you actually READ WHAT I WROTE?

I said, I go, I purchase a MacBook and REPLACE Mac OS X with Windows. The operative word in that is REPLACE, no working side by side, not working within a virtual machine but REPLACE.

Why would someone pay more for a piece of hardware that offers NOTHING above a generic PC laptop if one isn't even going to run Mac OS X?

Remember thinkpads can be faulty too. From my experience more often than some people here would let you believe. I know 2 people who bought one and both had serious issues (logic board, power supply, ...).

I guess it's a game of luck if you get a faulty machine or not with any manufacturer. And if it happens, well, that's what the warranty is for.

Calm down, it's easy to miss something when reading. This reaction isn't warranted.
