Gave up on contracts about 8 years ago. Found contract prices kept increasing but value didn't, and phones were no longer free anymore. Plus they were locked to the carrier.

Decided to go SIM-only route and buy my phones outright. Don't regret my decision one bit.

Used to myself. Time again, from my other post / example:

You wanted the green one eventually didn't you? I just made some calculations myself.

On Three UK

Sapphire Black 128GB
Unlimited data, texts and calls
£59 / month + £49 one-off
Cost over 24 months: £1,465

Emerald Green on Amazon, same spec: £770 (€1,049)
PAYG SIM
£15 / month
Unlimited data, 300 minutes, 3000 tests
Cost over 24 months: £1,130

Guess I pre-order the green one.

Three words: Quality, consistency, compatibility.

* Apple hardware and software are designed specifically to work together. Android is a world of difference.
* iOS is more secure. Google has stated that Android isn't designed to be safe.

What does this have to do with the subject of the thread? If it was aimed at the higher price claim it seems to have been decided that they aren't actually cheaper. They are most assuredly not cheaper here in Germany.

Yep. Indeed most of europe they are all expensive regardless of iOS or android. A flagship is priced at flagship pricing for all.

HTC M9 here is €679 - €10 more than the iPhone 6 in Ireland.

In the UK the iPhone tends to be more expensive on contract, and that is because Apple force a premium to be charged on their devices by the provider, and if they don't agree to charge the premium then they are not allowed to sell Apple products.

Well that's just a load of crap, since that's a form of price fixing...

Personally, I like that Apple are overpriced. I can sell it better in the longer run and get something newer or cheaper. For resale value, iPhones. For better value and more ENDURING qualities like microsd slot, removable battery, or water resist, Android devices.

Apple is a lot like Nintendo with their rule with an iron fist control. Even Nintendo games are overpriced.

Sucker is born every minute.

That consistency and quality looks better if you are into ecosystems and being controlled. It is fine by me if people buy them. Wise shoppers can always get something better and useful for them.

Well, I was an Android developer for a while, having designed my own apps, themes, and ROMs. I still miss my htc Dream/G1.

Well I would hope you would have a little more to say than that previous post. Or maybe you haven't revisited android in awhile. Like those conditions are only true if you are all apple and why would there be security patches for a system that doesn't care about security. Being jailed is safer sure but then every os except iOS is 'insecure' because the user can do bad things

Well, you do make a good point. I haven't used Android since mid 2012, so my issues with that system could be gone by now.

The S6 Edge is cheaper than the iPhone? Last I checked it's Sammy's flagship of 2015?

OEMs charge what the market can bear.

Anyone can make a smartphone and price it at iphone-like levels. But how many will buy them at iPhone prices?

The only Android line that seems to be on par or higher than iPhones is Samsung Galaxy Note series and Edge series. $299 basic subsidized and priced just as high unlocked in Manila. The Note series especially doesn't drop in price as quickly as other Androids. Also, Samsung and Apple are the only two OEM’s with double digit market share. Other companies are trying to establish themselves and attracting customers with a lower price is a must for them to be more reputable. It worked for Xiaomi and might work for Asus which generally prices all their products lower than the competition. Great quality and better value is hard to find.
