you should qualify this with. .. if both have have the same specs and capability.

I think he is talking build quality with that example. Not necessarily specs. I would choose the ThinkPad over the Dell Inspiron any day even if they had the same specs. Although I've always considered ThinkPads as being ugly.

I like my phone to look somewhat decent and I don't use a case. Putting a case on quality hardware is like buying a leather sofa and covering it with bubble wrap. When I'm out and about between meetings, errands, etc. I like looking somewhat presentable and respectable and I like my phone to be an extension of that. So long as it is also both ergonomic and practical. Form has to equal function.

All that being said I don't think a phone puts one in a certain social status.

I like to save the environment. Plastic is less environmental friendly than aluminum and glass which can be recycled.

And btw tons of people are using their phones naked. I have for years. The case thing is something I don't really understand. I find it materialistic and pretentious

I see so many people obsessing over looks and what kind of materials are used in a phones build and I don't get it. The vast majority of people then take their phones and put them in a $20 case from a mall kiosk. You don't sit there staring at your naked phone, ok, maybe some do but most don't. S who cares what it's made out of or the lines in the design?

I'm not so sure if those who put a cheap plastic cover on, are the same ones who are obsessed about looks and build quality. They may be iPhone users for totally different reasons.

I'd imagine they are. I keep mine in a life proof case while its not cheap it's is cheap feeling IMO. However I do a lot of outdoorsy stuff so it serves a purpose and does a decent job at it. It's not uncommon for me to be using my iPhone in pouring down rain or it be covered in condensation for being exposed in a tent all night.

Some of us want the things in our world to be beautiful.

Also, for me, I remember a long time ago a wise person said to me, regarding decluttering ones' life :"don't have anything in your life that isn't beautiful or useful, or better yet - both".

Right, but you don't buy a Ferrari and then cover it up with an ugly, cheap plastic body kit to avoid it getting scuffed up. That's pretty much what people do with their phones though.

But you don't know what they do with the protective case once they get home. For all you know, off it comes.

In other words, it's human nature. To some, like Jony Ive and the HTC version of Jony Ive it's an art form. And to others, it is appreciative.

Good principle. I used to think Terence Conran came up with that. He certainly referenced it enough! Turns out it's by William Morris: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful"

I've got a super slim clear case on my iPhone 5. It makes very little difference to the aesthetics of the phone and you are able to keep the form factor of the iPhone.

On the other hand if people want to add their own custom feel to their iPhone by adding a unique case to it, then so what? There are many people like yourself asking this question over and over and over and over again here and I really don't get why it matters to you so much. Its almost like you are demanding to know why the iPhone is so popular and those that buy it are doing so for silly reasons.

I love the feel of good hardware, like the feel of a good watch on your wrist. I never have used any kind of case on any phone I've owned, I'm very careful with them and have never dropped one and I always pay to get a square trade warranty.

It's something intangible, and certainly something not everyone appreciates, nothing wrong with that. I like a nice solid watch on my wrist, others are more than happy with a Casio on their wrist, different strokes (no pun). I don't put function over form though, it's just one factor in my decision which phone to buy, but not the most important one.

Says it very nicely for me, too.:D
