As a near neophyte I hesitate to ask but in the Apple refurbished store I see many many MacPro with APPLE
supplied RAM and am wondering why almost all MacPro buyers do not use less costly aftermarket RAM?
Tech savvy I am not, but I am curious.
It's a decent question and there are many possible answers.
One that I can think of, off the top of my head, is that first-party RAM will be covered under Apple's warranty.
Whereas, if you have a problem with your aftermarket RAM, Apple will only go so far as to point out to you that your RAM is suspect and direct you to your RAM manufacturer for a warranty replacement. Said manufacturer warranty RMA turnaround time may be too long for a given Mac Pro customer to want to weather.
Most Mac Pro customers are working on heavy stuff and lose tons of money for each minute that they're down. So, from that standpoint, I can understand it.
Though, playing devil's advocate against that, you could buy aftermarket Mac Pro RAM, buy hot spares (so that the added time spent RMAing RAM doesn't hurt), and probably still save a ton of money off of Apple's pricing. Sort of depends on the M.O. of the person or organization caring for that Mac Pro, I guess.
Before the 27-inch iMacs were discontinued, I brought up this debate when it came to RAM for them and was told to just order the Macs with more RAM for this very reason. It's a waste, but it reduces risk and turnaround time. And, from that standpoint, I get it. Though, at that point, it's not my money to spend! 🤣
