Apple Music doesn't really work for me, because I'm extremely picky with my music. It's not anything that's wrong with AM, but rather myself. I don't have specific genres/artists I like, and so the songs I DO enjoy are few and scattered. As such, paying $10 a month is not a deal for me because at most, I only purchase 2-3 songs per month, and sometimes none at all. I guess I'm "not the target market."

I did go with Spotify though, thanks to their $5/month student discount. Sure, it's still technically not a good deal for me. But $5/month is easier for me to swallow, and once it expires, I'll have a good amount of songs that I discovered and will be able to purchase them permanently on iTunes thanks to the $60 I saved for choosing them over AM.

I wonder how long Spotify will continue with the student discount? They, like Pandora, are losing money each moth.

Yeah, I can't imagine it being much longer, which is why I hurried up and got it now. I believe it was advertised more prominently on their site before, and now it's all the way at the bottom.

I think it's strange that they allow you to renew the student discount up to 3 more times. I would have definitely thought that it would be a 1-year discount and afterwards, it goes up. Eh, whatever, I'll take advantage of it while I can.

For me I think it's the fact that I own so much music already, I'm not sure if AM is worth the price of admission. I'm 39 so have a ton of CD purchased music that i converted to digital and then started buying music through iTunes. Admittedly, I'm also starting to get into the "today's music sucks" camp and find myself listening to the older music I own over and over again rather than giving some new music a chance. If i was in my early 20's then i absolutely think AM would be worth it as opposed to spending money to build up a music collection. I see no benefit to the "Owning model" as opposed to the "streaming model" if you're starting from scratch. but for those with a huge purchased collection already, the "Streaming model" doesn't make as much sense.
I am older than you and have about 25,000 songs in my iTunes library ripped from my own CDs into ALAC. I love music and I love having millions of songs available that I don't own. I do like some of the current music, Amos Lee, Chris Stapleton, etc.. but even the old stuff like Miles Davis is great because the services have so much stuff that I don't have.

I could just listen to the music that I have collected over the years and be fairly happy, but I also like the thrill of hearing something new that I now enjoy. In any event, $10 a month is a bargain compared to what I used to spend on music.
