I do get a lot more work done on my M1 MBA than I did my 2012 MBP (even with upgraded SSD and RAM). So sure it might work, but if someone uses it for productivity then it’s more like comparing a crappy tool and a good tool

You can only type so fast….

Not everyone’s productivity is that processor intensive. Most productivity is text/data based.

I walk the streets and see them in cafe's and the parks. I see so many people with MacBooks from 2012 that have the light in the back with an out of day OS yet they are using an iPhone 14 or newer. I just don't understand why they don't at least upgrade to a M1 MacBook Air for $800. If they can afford a new iPhone they can afford to update there out of date, insecure laptop.
This is not the negative thing you think it is…it is the precise reason people buy Apple hardware.

That's the secret, they cant afford an iPhone, only finance it, vision pro is going to fail so hard at $3500.

This post made me literally laugh out loud.

I mean, if someone is fine with using an old MacBook, they're fine with using an old MacBook. They're not obligated to upgrade. I don't even understand the sentiment! LOL.

On the other hand, if YOU are offering free upgrades to those you see who are using old MacBooks, I'm joining the queue. I hereby allow you to upgrade my old outdated 2017 MacBook Pro to a current M3 MacBook Pro model, all at your expense and not mine. Thank you.

LOL

Precisely. The cellular carriers normalized financial schemes to get a customer in a new phone but disguising the true cost in monthly payments. General computer hardware doesn’t have these market arrangements. The ways to get a new laptop without upfront cash are more plainly usurious and less incentivized. Apple has started offering 0% financing with monthly payment arrangements but that is more direct rather than hidden costs. I venture to guess that many US customers who get new phones through cellular carriers do not even realize the percentage of their bill going to payoff their phone.

Several things... these days new iPhones are "free" with trade in and other carrier perks... computers are not free regardless of how you try to spin it... and computers just work and do the job until they don't... many Mac users are just getting their stuff done without regard for the snobs who choose to judge their tool of choice, as long as it gets the job done... a lot of people don't buy into the "must have the latest and greatest".

But you go right ahead and keep judging other people ...

You seem to be a victim of a severe case of 'keeping up with the Joneses'.
Treatment is hard, but doable. The first step is to admit that you have it.

REPAIRABLE . by he end user. The SSD's on Apple silicon only have a certain shelf life. And Apple has made replacing the SSD a huge job and expensive.

Plus all of people sill need bootcamp and access o Windows. Not ARM Windows as there is very little software for ARM on Windows currently. And Major cost in new software when ARM versions are made.

Here's my thoughts.

1. Is this an example of confirmation bias? The only four laptops that Apple released in 2012 were:
- MacBook Air (11" and 13")
- MacBook Pro (13" and 15")
- MacBook Pro Retina (15")

I believe all of these machines appear the same, and there were a couple of model years that were similar. I know the MacBook Airs looked the same util 2017. I would not be surprised if the Pros were similar as well.

2. How do you know they are out-of-date systems? Because the MacBook Airs looked the same from 2012 to 2017, it's unknown if they are completely out of date or if they are new? Do you talk to these users about what version of MacOS they are using, and do you look at the "About this Mac" menu? I doubt it. macOS Catalina, the last version a MacBook Air 13" can run, was last updated in 2021 (source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/103132). So the system would not be that out of date (all things considered).

3. Why do you care if they are running an out-of-date system? The computer works for their needs, it provides adequate security for their needs, and anything high security (according to you) would be using their phone. The days of "have an insecure system online will result in instant hacking" is long long over.

While I cannot speak for people in cafes, I still use MacBook Pro 13” from 2015 because it works for my needs. I do not take it out of the house, however. I probably use iPhone 60% of the time, iPad - 35% and MBP - 5%. Basically, I will always go for the smallest device possible allowing me to accomplish the task comfortably and, in most cases, iPhone will be enough.

Because their MacBook from 2012 probably has the same amount of RAM and storage as a $1600 brand new "Pro" Device.

Also, and this is subjective and probably not the reason why people don't upgrade their laptops, but I just find the new line of MacBooks uglier than the ones made up untill 2015. The light-up logo, symmetrical design without an ugly notch, thinner chassis - in certain ways that era MacBooks look more contemporary than the new ones.

They don’t have corporations spamming them to upgrade their laptop every 2 years or sooner/get a second laptop for a family member at a discount/trade in their old one for a new one and continue their same monthly payment plan at a great low low price that cannot be beaten.

Did their butler go missing with their upgrade? Did their crack dealer get locked up? I just don't understand why they don't at least upgrade to a M1 MacBook Air for $800, because everyone must be an shallow, fake and broke Apple show pony, no? If they can afford a new iPhone they can afford to update there out of date, insecure laptop, surely? Or maybe they should hire a private tutor to learn punk-tuation. What's wrong with these savages? 😄
