When I referred to iMacs, I was including the G3 & G4 models as well as the new models. According to Apple, you cannot perform any work on the new iMacs. I almost decided to buy a new iMac until I read a number of stories about the $900 cost to repair them. Don't get me wrong. I love Apple. But I do not need the power of the Mac Pro. I want a new Mac, but they do not make one I want to buy. I will probably have to buy a Power Mac G5 to go along with my 2 Blue & White Power Macs (G3) and my 2.41 GHz Compaq.

according to apple? quote please? That is the silliest thing I have heard today! "According to Apple, you cannot perform any work on the new iMacs. "

 I do a lot of work on mine. I guess I had better stop huh?

he means "work" as in repair work or upgrade work... like installing hard drives, etc. Only thing officially user-upgradeable in Intel iMacs is the RAM.

I love my 20" Core Duo iMac. I traded in my Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz (15") to get it after my work provided me with a (Windows) laptop. It is quiet, performance is great, and the screen is huge. I also got it for approximately half the price (~$1200 including AppleCare) that any MacBook Pro would have cost me at the time.

My next Mac will likely also be an iMac, but I am going to wait until after it becomes affordable/practical to have more than 2 GB of RAM.

personally i'd rather buy a mac mini and hook it up to a TV, and get a MB/MBP instead of getting an imac.

I've had a IIGS, a 7100, a G3 iMac, a G4 iMac, and I will be buying another iMac after this next rev. In my experience the best reason to buy an iMac is its all in one concept. This is one of the main pillars of Apple philosophy, and as we continue along Moore's curve toward the singularity, it becomes more necessary to upgrade all of the components of our systems in order to remain up-to-date. So far I have stuck with each of my iMacs for over 4 years before upgrading. In both cases I ran out of hard drive space around the second year and both of their disk drives died in the third year. So I purchased an external HD and burner for each and they are both still running 24/7 (it warms my heart to see my blue and white iMac happily running safari, mail and sharing iTunes over Airport and going on 9 years old). If I had more money I would probably upgrade every three years but in the fourth year you really only feel it hard in the games dept. Another problem is that I perceive Apple is taking their largest profit margins on iMacs vs the other desktops and notebooks, however I think this is just a reflection of the high end iMac being (in Apple's view) the truest definition of a consumer computer on the market and heir to the original Macintosh. ...and I agree.

I love my iMac (20" G5 iSight) for it's sleek appearance and it does everything I need to to do.

It is in my small office room that has the desk and a small sofa, and the iMac serves double duty as a TV/media center/tivo thanks to the eyeTV I have hooked up to it. The couch is fairly close to the iMac, so 20" is a nice-sized screen for watching TV.

This is a list I sent to a family member who was looking at buying an iMac. They wanted reasons to get the iMac as well as reasons to switch to a Mac in general.

The benefits of the iMac are:
1) It's two computers in one (a Mac and a PC)
2) Windows can run both in Mac OS (for graphically nonintensive apps) or boot into Windows for games
3) It can run Office (on Mac and/or PC)
4) The GPU is fast enough for nearly every game aside from the latest FPS's and Oblivion
5) Ultra small footprint. Takes up less room than some monitors.
6) All in one design. No external tower or speakers.
7) Very quiet.
8) No wires (aside from power, keyboard and mouse)
9) No worry about viruses, adware or spyware
10) The best customer service (according to 3rd parties) in the business
11) [Not relevant here]
12) Amazing resale value
13) iLife suite is the best
14) built-in iSight camera so you can easily video conference with family in [wherever]
-------------------------------
([My Wife's] Contributions)
15) Premium photo suite, better than things you can BUY for Windows (iPhoto)
16) It looks pretty
17) I don't really know why most people don't have Macs
18) Haven't you seen the commercials?!
19) [not relevant]

The cons:
1) Some webpages only work with Internet Explorer so you would have to start up Windows to use it. (You can do this through Mac OS or actually boot into Windows)
2) It costs more than a tower/monitor combo [he was looking to get a home-built setup]
3) You lose some graphics power vs a built system
4) Officially, you can only upgrade the memory (but you CAN upgrade the HD and CPU)

Many people I know have had their iMacs die within 2 years. Usually a video board or a logic board. Then it is cheaper to buy a new computer rather than have it repaired.

If Apple brings out a Mac like the Mac Pro, but with a lot less power and a much cheaper price, I will buy one.

Any comments?

Price is the main reason for me to buy the iMacs. Really great price.;)

I also question the heat factor in such a compact unit. Maybe that is why they die so young. I prefer the Power Mac so I can muck around inside. I had my optical drive die recently. I just bought a new drive, and I am back computing. In an iMac, I would be out of business.

Within 2 years? That is why people should buy AppleCare..which covers them for 3 years, and it only costs $199CAD on any iMac...$199 isn't a lot when spending $2249CAD on a 24"...cheap peace of mind.

As Walter S Mossberg said: "We've been testing this new iMac, and our verdict is that it's the gold standard of desktop PCs. To put it simply: No desktop offered by Dell or Hewlett-Packard or Sony or Gateway can match the new iMac G5's combination of power, elegance, simplicity, ease of use, built-in software, stability and security. From setup to performing the most intense tasks, it's a pleasure to use".

Now put the iMac with an iGo and wow everybody you know - adding a new dimension and degree of mobile flexibility to your set-up!
