Love my new 20" iMac, and hate the mouse. Why can't a company that can design so many things so wonderfully (right down to the beautiful way they package the keyboard, manuals, discs, etc.) design a decent mouse?

Tradition. It must be that. Unless Steve Jobs simply has no taste in mice.

They did design a good mouse, but all the newbies complained about only having one button.

True, the Apple Pro mouse is their best effort to date.

AMEN! This is exactly right.

Look, we are all mac fans here, so we can be honest. As 'pretty' as the Mighty Mouse is, and as much as we like Apple's (and Steve's) commitment to simle flowing lines and simple design, we must admit that the mouse (as the primary or secondary input device of our computers) deserves a bit of a heavier balance on 'function' instead of 'form'.

The hilarious thing is that Mac OSX is more capable of taking advantage of multi-button mice than even windows. With Expose, spaces, dashboard, a quality multi-button mouse can make all the difference in your comuting experience.

I find it absolutely amazing that in the day and age of iPods, the iPhone, the iLife lifestyle, the iMac, and the world's most advanced operating system, that we can't STILL EVEN get a decent multi-function mouse from Apple! We are not all beginners who find a single button more easy to figure out... even our 5 year old children can figure out how to use a 9-button logitech mouse, so why can't Apple Engineers?

Really, I guess its not as big of a deal as we make it out to be. I mean, we can keep spending money with Logitech and Microsoft if we have to... it just seems strange that Apple wouldn't rather sell us a mouse. Obviously we would buy it, as whipped as we are, even if it was CLOSE in functionality...

And if there are any Apple engineers reading this, please... start HERE:
logitech-revolution-mx.jpg

I have this mouse and understand that the Logitech drivers no not play nice with OSX. Wondering.

I have a mighty mouse on my quicksilver G4 and i'm on the fence about it. It likes to jump to one side of the screen and i have to track back to my work and other times it plays nice. ...
This behaviour is usually associated with your mouse pad, not the mouse. If you have a mouse pad (or desk) that has an image on it or anything but a solid colour background, the mighty mouse usually does exactly that until you change it out. Pretty sure any optical mouse will do that though.

Random lock ups then I read that the drivers were bad, but I would be happy to try again.. do you get them from the Logitech site?

I just plugged it in and it worked perfectly... then I installed the software on the disc so that I could control the additional functions.

No problems after about 3 months of use!

Hmm, ok, the V100 doesn't do the same, and it's optical too. The MX 1000 is laser, so i can use that on anything.

BLAH...had the "Revolution" at my last job. Granted it was on a Windows machine, but I couldn't stand it. Poor response, cheap feel to me. Also, Logitech needs to do something about their drivers; talk about crap! Standard Windows Mouse drivers work better than the Logitech. Again, I do preface that it was on a Windows box, and not a Mac. I have an MM wireless on my 20"iMac, and love it...

Yeah, the MX revolution was kind of mediocre on a Windows laptop I was using, but when attached to a Mac, it's pure heaven.... :D

It's a shame they're so pricey, though.

Although this thread is about why the Mighty Mouse is bad, and not the revolution... I feel an obligation to atleast respond. Don't know what to tell you about the drivers man, they work flawlessly on my iMac. Since you were on a PC, the problem could stem from just about anywhere. The Rev, in my opinion, has a much more quality feel to it than the MM, and I frankly don't see how someone could possibly prefer the MM over the Revolution. I mean, I know that different people like different things, but thats like liking a ford escort over a Cadillac. The Revolution has gotten rave review after rave review in the computer magazines and blogs, and even Macworld gave the MM 3 out of 5 mice if I remember right.

I think you are the odd man out.

i see exactly where you are going with that, but (im not taking the piss) i would for the ford to be honest. cadillac is some american thing which in the UK is expensive, very very badly made plastic thing with huge great big engines that dont produce much power. so ford for me thanks:D

getting back to the point, ive used logitech equipment for a very long time and have always found it very good quality and lasts a very long time. some of their mice buttons do start to stop working after two or three yuears though. for example the logitech g5 mouse, stopped working.

this was the best mouse I think Apple ever made. One of the last of the ADB that shipped with the beige boxes.

800px-Apple-ADB-mouse.jpg

Sure it only had one button, but it was ergonomically the most comfortable I've ever used. I'm using a Logitech MX1000 and the problem with all Logitech mice is that they are over sculpted to the point were the contours and buttons only really work for a certain size of hand. The ridges are annoying if you just want to rest your hand casually.

yeah, i have mixed feelings about the mighty mouse. i have a wired one and a wireless one, and mainly use the wireless one. while i think the design and concept are phenomenal (i love the shape... i personally think it's really comfy; i love the side button(s) and the scroll ball), but i think the execution leaves something to be desired. they clearly didn't think it through when they "developed" the scroll ball. while it's perfect (to me, anyway) when it's new, when it gets dirty, it is the biggest pain in the ass to clean. yeah, i realize they give instructions on the website, but that really doesn't help that much at all, and i'm NOT one of those people who's actually going to take the time to disassemble the mouse to clean it out... that's just asinine to me.

i wish they would implement a third touch area for scrolling... i think that would be ideal. someone on macrumors did a mockup of something like that, a slightly indented square or rectangle where you could scroll up or down, side to side, along with the two "button" areas already there.

just my 2 cents :p

I like it. I don't like cleaning the scroll ball every 2 weeks and the fact the 4th button starts activating on its own which drove me to turn it off. That was my old MM though. I got a new iMac and the new MM works nicely at least for the 10 days I've had it. :) Knock on wood.

I don't do not agree

Okay.
Then, let me say that the only thing that I like about the MM is that it is white.
A lot of study has gone into mouse development in regard to ergonomics, and MM ignores all of it. The mouse is uncomfortable; it doesn't form to the hand. I would think that anyone who spends a great deal of time with the MM is going to wind up with some type of carpal tunnel whatever.
The teeny-tiny, fragile scroll niblet doesn't inspire confidence; that's for sure. It does not allow one to speed scroll.

I could go on, but--truly--I believe the mouse is completely antithetical to everything that Apple represents. Apple is all about intuitiveness and innovation, about form AND function, about aesthetics and application.

This mouse is state of the art. If we travel back in time to 1993.

(This iMac, though, is beautiful.)

The mighty mouse is perfect...it is the epitome of an Apple product, not too many buttons, the ball is in the perfect place (you can definitely speed scroll, I don't know what that is all about)...the side buttons are fine and it looks beautiful...I can't understand why so many hate on the MM, I have never had a problem with it, and when friends come over and see it, they love it!

Sorry, but I'm siding with the majority on this one. The MM has so so functionality, but the ball issue renders it almost total crap. Looks nice and has a nice design, though.

Love the MX Revolution on my imac. Had problems with the crap drivers from the logitech site (evidently, it was too much effort for them to put mac drivers on their install disc), and couldn't get the mouse's higher functions to work.

Steermouse came to the rescue, and it's been all great from here. If there's anything you do repeatedly on a daily basis, the extra buttons on the mouse are a life saver...

Alot of ppl like it, Im like you, I hated it. Never used one til I got my iMac a month ago. Used it about 20min, right back into the package and on Ebay. I went back to an old Macally wired mouse that I had. Then the next day went out and got a Microsoft USB wireless in a nice shade of silver to match. MS doesnt do much right, but makes a nice mouse. :p

I think it goes pretty well with the Al iMac and keyboard

i like the apple pro black or clear white mouses at school we have the mighty mouses and i always hit the sides and the thing pisses me off so much espically when im like useing flash or somthing where i need my concentration.. but take of microsoft and id but that no prob with my new mac if i bought one

The scroll ball on my Mighty Mouse just died the other day. Tried cleaning it, but that didn't seem to work. It won't scroll down anymore.

It really sucks, because I've always been a fan of the MM. I never had any problems with my other MM, which died after 2 years of use. This one must be a dud though; I was going to call Apple and ask for a replacement, but I'm sure that one will die out as well so I'm gonna get a cheap USB wireless mouse from Staples. Hopefully that one works for longer than 3 months. :(

This is where I think apple should start in regards to design for a mouse.

Fast, responsive, and more comfortable than any mouse I have ever used. The blue lights and such are just a quirk of the pc gaming hardware LED love affair and can go any time. But the comfort and speed of this mouse is exactly what I want. If only they had Mac drivers for it. It is very right handed though but not like the Logitechs in their over sculpted way.

i hhave a cheap 20$ creative mouse and it has a blue led i didnt expect that from a cheap mouse

They did design a good mouse, but all the newbies complained about only having one button.

The Apple Pro Mouse is perfect. People only need all the buttons because they are too intellectually lazy to learn the keyboard shortcuts that are faster and more efficient. :D ( Runs away and hides under his flame retardant blanket)

very true i got a double click mouse for games other wise if im using adobe things i always hit control click

I'm loving my BT "Pro" Mouse

Very nice, I had a wired Mighty Mouse(and the pro wired model), and bought the BT one click....love it, and the keyboard shortcuts I now use

See, I don't like mice like that one. When I use a mouse (I use the Mighty Mouse), I only grip it with my fingertips, and I grip it very lightly. I don't like to lay my whole hand on the mouse. So for me, the MM is perfect. The scroll ball is perfect and easy to use, and the mouse itself fits nicely in my fingertips.

I guess if you like laying your whole hand on the mouse, I could see why the MM would be annoying.

I'm the same. You're supposed to grip a mouse, not grope it. The "other" mice all feel clunky with scroll wheels the size of Idaho. I may recall some adjusting to the MM at first because it is different from all the others.

If you guys want to complain about something, complain about the lack of an Apple ergonomic keyboard. The Apple keyboard is pretty good for not having the split keyboard, but I did love the MS Natural Keyboard I had. However, I hadn't really thought about the keyboard for many months until this thread.
