Why can't I make up my mind!

I just ordered a new iMac 24" 2.8Ghz yesterday and now getting second thoughts! I keep thinking to myself if I should have waited for MacWorld in January. Why is this drving me nuts!:mad: Maybe I should buy something older, this way I don't care about the new. What is the best way to stay on top of the Mac update wave?

Update: Also, has anyone have experience with the wireless keyboards and mouse? I ordered my computer with the wired keyboard and mouse but now I feel that it would be nice not having to deal with the wires. Is there any advantage to either of them?

Well here is my 2 cents....I went to the Apple Store 3 different times to look at the new iMacs. They were great - except for one big thing to me. They only come with glossy glass screens. I HATE glossy screens. Soooo, I found a deal on a new iMac 2.16 complete with iLife, 08, iWork 08, and leopard for $1200. But the real reason I jumped on it is because the screen is MATTE! yay!!!

I am in MAC heaven. I maxed out the memory and currently run FCP with HD footage and it takes all I can give it. This iMac burns!!! Whew....

I second to that !
The white iMac is fantastic - I hate glossy screens as well and my new machine works great, no freezing, no other issues.
Get a white iMac and you'll be happy !
 
That is what I have and I am very satisfied with mine, but unlike the above, i did not max it out.
But it is still a great machine!
 
I'm in agreement, glossy screen glare blows. If I worked for Apple, I'd offer it as an option.

Says YOU. How can you say that the OP will be happy if they get the white? Just because you are happy with yours doesn't mean everyone else will be. I happen to own the 24" glossy and I am so hooked. I hate those boring dry looking matte screens, the flat look brings no life to my computing. Just because I like the glossy doesn't give cause for me to tell the OP, get the glossy, you'll be happy.
Now honestly, the OP should get the ALU Mac for the right reasons, more memory supported, faster, larger system bus and the it doesn't look like a Fisher Price toy.

Now to the OP's concern, the iMac won't be touched at Macworld. The key trick to Apple's way to swindle you to buy something new is a speed bump just before Macworld. For instance the Macbooks were just bumped up and the rumor is new Ultra Portable to show up at Macworld. This just may happen so if you were torn between a Macbook and MBP then you should wait.
Apple has done this with the iMac and the Powerbook before. The new ALU iMac was intro'd in August so we may not see a bump till say March or April. Buy Now.
 
I love my iMac. The only time I really notice the glossy screen with reflections is on dark screens or when its turned off.

Quite correct. The aluminum-and-glare iMac never looks like a Fisher-Price toy:

- When turned OFF, it looks "even better ... more professional ... updated!"

- When turned ON, the display looks like a cheap Fisher-Price knock-off.

I got that same configuration at the Apple Store a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be any happier. You will love your new baby! :D

The way I see it is...keep your order and be happy with your purchase. If you keep worrying about the next great system, then you'll be worrying for a long time.
 
I was in the same boat, just got my 2.8 BTO today. This model is fairly new so I gambled on Apple updating other products instead of the iMac. If I'm wrong I'll still feel OK because the chance for a new update is accompanied by the risk of a system instability or manufacturing problem that will need time to work itself out.

As soon as the freeze issue was sorted out I placed my order and will deal with the hardware updates as they come. If something new comes along that I simply MUST have I'll wait until the kinks are worked out and list this one on Craigslist. My Mini C2D sold in a matter of days.

Good luck with your new toy. Oh and mine just shipped on 11/16 from China with the Leopard drop in (320 HDD). I did an erase and install, loaded the iLife 08 apps from the Tiger backup disc and all is well - and I saved ~9 GB of space by deleting additional languages and printer drivers as others here have suggested.

Although this glare-no glare argument is probably one of the more ridiculous and never ending arguments on macrumors...to each his own.
 
Any opinions of wireless or wired keyboard and mouse?

I just looked at some new old stock 24" 2.16Ghz white iMacs. Man I would be saving $900 if I go with the older white one. That's a good savings. Even the new 24" 2.4Ghs looks good now, I would be saving $400 if I change to the 2.4. ahhh! :confused:
 
My 2 cents

Enough with the glossy vs matte screen thing already.:D I have had my 2.8 since August 22nd and have not had freezing, or color or any other problems with it so far. If you keep waiting for the next big thing, you will never get your new machine. I think it will be at least April before they do any kind of major update to these iMacs. And even then, I could see them doing a silent speed bump like they did with the macbooks but not much beyond that for quite a while. When I bought my 2.8 (which at the time was not a BTO), I knew I wanted to get the most bang for buck and that I would not be replacing it for at least 5 years. If you need it now (and given the fact that you placed the order it seems like you do), you should get it now. I ordered mine in August because I knew I would need it for the school year and it replaced a 5.5 year old Quicksilver G4. The G4 is fast enough to handle Leopard but I have 3 applications that are Windows only and was tired of using Virtual PC. Now I use Codeweavers Crossover to run my 3 apps and don't need to have windows installed. Moving on to the glossy screen thing, it is really a question of personal preference. Some people like it and some people don't. Don't believe the nonsense people are spreading about pros only using matte screens because of color correction stuff. It is simply untrue. The real pros are more likely to calibrate their screens by eye then they are to use the gizmos that can't work on glossy.
Finally regarding the keyboard, that is also a personal preference thing. Not having the wires is great but you also loose the number pad on the right hand side. For me, that doesn't work. If you don't care about the number pad and you like the spread out letters on the current keyboard, get the wireless and enjoy it. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

I have the wired keyboard and the wireless mighty mouse for my iMac. I would have gotten the wireless keyboard, but it doesn't have a dedicated number pad which for me is a deal-breaker. Love the mouse.
 
My daughter has the apple wireless mouse and keyboard for her iMac and she really likes them.

For my upcoming purchase I am going to stick to keyboard that the iMac comes with but I am going to use my PC wireless mouse (logitech mx1000). I hooked it up to her system and it worked with no issues and I just love the mouse. It comes with a cradle that recharges the battery and I have never had issues with the 2 I own.

Do the batteries on this run out very quickly? In the past, I have heard that is a problem with some of the wireless mice.......
 
I asked my daughter a few days ago about the batteries in the apple wireless mouse and she seemed to imply the run out every 1-2 months.

For my logitech wireless, they never run out. I simply put the mouse in the cradle at the end of the night and the recharge.
 
I wouldn't worry about it. I think you made a good choice. I waited for the new ones to come out cause I love the glossy screen. I can't stand to look at a normal screen now. It just doesn't look the same. Thats why I'm giving my windows laptop to my grandparents. It's just not as bright.

I was thinking with going with the 2.8 but went with the 2.4 and love it.
 
Well, I got my new iMac yesterday and have not opened it yet. I might return it and wait till January (MacWorld). I am just wondering what other new options will be out there. I feel that there is going to be some big changes and I rather be on the latest product wave than to spend as much as I did on this computer now. It would be nice if Apple would give out some hints of what's to come. I feel that it not fair to charge full price on something when something newer and faster will be coming out very soon for the same price. Even if Apple would lower their prices on the current stuff that they know they are going to upgrade soon, this would give us a hint that something new is coming out soon. I mean you spend $2000 on a nice system now and then in a few weeks they come out with a better system for the same price. Oh well, that's the way it goes for the technology world. I might be looking in to it way too much.:rolleyes: I don't understand way I am not crazy excited that I just got this new computer.
 
The other thing I am not crazy about is how some people who have just received their iMacs like me, stated that their computers didn't come with Leopard pre-installed and that the box that the computer came in say Tiger on it(I haven't checked mine yet). They came with a dropped DVD. I feel that for a new system to be in the $2000 range and up should have the latest software installed. I know that these iMac were updated back in August but come on, we know how fast computers are update today. Why buy a system in November that was made back in August. Heck, it might have been sitting in a warehouse for who knows how long. We are spending full price for a computer that is already 3 months old and did not have Leopard installed. It make these iMacs look kind of thrown together, if you know what I mean. Am I thinking out of term here? Please let me know. I will say that I have learned a lot on these forums!
