He could have meant "Carriers" in the form of AT&T (maybe they want to see it before it sells and run it through some tests?) and the FCC (I know that they have to test both the wifi and 3g models, but maybe 3g testing takes longer?).

Anyways, as the tech specs currently stand, there is no 3g support on tmobile, and they're not gonna sell it on t-mobile without 3g, since at&t has 3g support.

That was said up here in Canada as recently as spring of 2009 about Bell and Telus.

By fall of 2009, Bell and Telus had completed their complete rollout of a hybrid system of their intact legacy 2G CDMA and 3G EV-DO network, alongside their new shared nationwide 3G+ HSPA network. It is technologically possible.

It requires a huge capital investment, which is why Bell and Telus shared the cost by splitting the country up into zones and only upgrading one company's network in each zone. HSPA customers of each company can freely access the infrastructure that was installed by the other company. It may not be financially possible for Verizon to do something like that right now.

If you do a hybrid system, it is possible; however, as the system is now, it is technologically impossible.

We are most likely to see a CDMA iPad if/when a CDMA iPhone is produced, which is likely to happen in 2011, but perhaps Q3/4 2010.

Unlikely... AT&T didn't agree to those terms just for kicks, they must've got something out of it... like even more extended exclusivity.

I'm sure in time we will find out. I think AT&T got something out of it while Verizon was being uncooperative and requiring insane things - for example, they wanted the VCast store instead of the iTunes store? Is that a joke?

Verizon always wants it their way, which is why El Jobso refuses them and has them begging.

Also, after the whole 1st Gen iPhone rejection, El Jobso's now only partners with those that helped him since day 1 (when they had nothing). Also take into account Verizon's ads bashing the iPhone with the Droid, more than reason to have El Jobso angry at them. Just see how he punished McGraw Hill...

I think he messed up. He said "approval by carriers" when he meant "approval by telecommunications agencies and (optional) deals with carriers".
