MacBook Pro is useless, just a little bit faster. If its really that big of a deal, bring a monitor with you.

$1000 more expensive, 1.5gb more RAM, 2 inch bigger screen. It's not even a notebook.

For $400 i could buy a 17 inch widescreen monitor, and 2 gigs of memory.

Money burners :(

Loving the ridiculous post here! (NOT) I believe the title of this thread is "Why did you buy an MBP?", not "Why did you post the most useless thread of the day?"

If its really that big of a deal, bring a monitor with you
--> Why not carry an iMac around with you instead?!?!

some of us use graphics card-intense programs like aperture or final cut, i mean can you imagine trying to work with final cut on a macbook

North of where I'd like to be
Mac - aesthetics is not a frill; it’s a fit between form and function
17” – I do graphics, video, and I’m learning how to program. All require multiple windows. The real estate is amazing.
PB – I travel a lot. Even when I’m in town, I like to sit at cafes and assorted libraries. I started weaning myself off of my desktop at University when I started doing my graduate research. When I have to, I’ll probably just get a large monitor.
2.33 Core 2 Duo – future ready and bug-free
2 GB – can handle all my media applications

why did i buy one?

design
backlit keyboard (i really do use it)
graphics, for motion, shake, aperture etc
display resolution
price (academic discount) ;)
size - 13" too small to work with, 17" not portable enough for me, 15" perfek
ability to power up to 30" display - for when i graduate and can finally afford that 30" ACD

i could go on :)

Exactly. I can take a 17" MBP on-site with me to photo & video shoots and edit on-the-fly, rip DVDs with complex menus for clients, etc. Aperture, FCP, etc. No problems. Sure, it's not as powerful as a desktop but I don't remember being able to lug a desktop with me in order to assemble a rough cut while at the top of a mountain in the Rockies or in the middle of the Palm desert or under a bridge somewhere in Prague. Believe me, my 17" PB & MBPs go with me everywhere.

"Bring a monitor with you" - bah. Mr. MacBook sounds like he's either jealous or not a pro user.

Ha I wish I could edit at the top of the mountain, I don't plan on doing that any time soon. Still makes me happy I have a portable so if the chance ever comes that I go to the top of a mountain, I have an Apple Portable with me..

- I bought it because I think it's the best looking laptop around

- the 15.4" screen is the perfect size for me.

- It's light enough for me to carry to class, home and on trips.

Always reliable and dependable and absolutely wonderful. And I haven't seen a PC laptop that I'd rather have...

Collin, #1 quoted comment: couldn't agree more! #2 quoted comment: I feel the same way. #3 quoted comment: VERY good to hear... I see other people have made the same statement. This makes me really confident with my decision! #4 quoted comment: :D!

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

So true. I learned that in Economics this semester, haha!

LOVED your reply! Thanks for all of the details. I liked knowing that you have the C2D and went with the 2.33 ghz. I feel like I'll be going to more and more (different types of) places with my new portability option.

Very true. You just can't compare a Mac to a PC's pricing.

you sure can! you just have to make sure to include the extras you get with a Mac when making the comparison. it's just that some of the things (like never having to worry about viruses) are difficult to put a price tag on ;)

#1: is it really that useful? I think some other repliers have mentioned it too. I remember seeing several pictures of when the MBPs came out. Seems like such a neat option! I'm sure I'll definitely use it too.

#2: I can't wait to take advantage of that!

Sure, it's not as powerful as a desktop...

I randomly see this comment about laptops at times. The funny thing is, it'll actually be way better for me than any desktop I've (or my family) ever owned! Right now, my Gateway is running on 256 MB of RAM and has a 40 gig HD. I'm 100% positive an upgrade to the MBP will make me feel like I'm still working from a desktop. Right? My mind would change, obviously, though, if I was to get a hold of the powerful machines they have out there now, though!

I'm loving all of the replies, guys! :) Thanks so much for your input. Keep 'em comin'!

15" screen - Not to big, not to small. Perfect all around, commuter or coffee table size.
Backlit keyboard - You dont realize what you have been missing out on!
Dedicated graphics card - There is a difference, when you start getting into photo manipulation and video editing.
Macbook seems thicker...clunkier to me. I didnt like the keyboard, or the general feel. The latch is nice though.
I got the best, so I didn't have to keep reminding myself, that I didnt, or what if I did? We are all guilty of that.

Because I just got a new Credit Card from Paypal with a £3000 limit, and it was burning a hole in my wallet ;)

I think its very, very useful. The screen is bright enough at its highest setting to light the keyboard somewhat, but it comes to use the best when your running off battery and lower the brightness, and just use a tad of the backlit keyboard.

I went from a 12'' ibook to a 12'' pb then finally my 15.4'' mbp. I love it, best computer I've ever owned. Dont get me wrong, I loved and MISS the portability of the 12 inchers, but carrying around my mbp is'nt too much of a big deal. I bought my gf a macbook, and while its nice and small, I think itll be impossible to go back to such a small screen.

Hope that helps, and BTW..the MBP is sooooo much sexier ;)

how does 1.5 GB of RAM and 2" on the screen make it not a notebook? I'm confused...and you want to bring a monitor on top of that to walk around with? really now...

you also forgot a dedicated graphics solution as well as a faster processor. :)

i smell jealousy.

I bought my Macbook Pro because I wanted a Mac laptop for a while. My student union computer store had a surplus of Core Duo refurbs for $799 and I just couldn't pass it up. I love the size, abundance of features and probably the main thing: it's not a PC! I've used PCs for many years and still have a few of them but I was ready to try something different. I had heard many good things about Apple products so I gave it a shot. I am very impressed with the switch so far and have my eyes set on an iMac in the future to replace my aging HP desktop. Admittedly, I probably don't use half the features that are on the Macbook Pro but I'm learning new things everyday.:)

By saying you got "the best", are you referring to just the MBP itself over the MacBook or did you get a fully-loaded MBP? I just made another thread about why people should get fully-loaded ones or why they think it's not a smart decision. I'm eager to hear what you think!

a better place
Long story shortened...

Going from a Rev E powerbook 15.4" to a white macbook, however it had a superdrive that wasnt so super and it likes ejecting every disc.

It was returned. I then got a blackbook.

I used my blackbook for 6 months or so before I got sick of it looking greasy and oily, even though I'm really careful and hyper clean.

Just got to the point I hated staring at that shiny trackpad, and so when I saw a good deal on a refurb on the apple webstore, I couldnt resist and so I ordered a macbook pro.

Much happier. I love the design, and they are 'cooler' literally on your lap than a macbook.

MBP over the MB. Good question though.

I got the 2.16 C2D, as it seems to be the best bang for buck. After I put an additional gig of ram in the machine, the $350 difference up to the next unit, was not worth, the return for me, as my machine has the same technology as the faster unit.
