I bought a mini 4 for one of my younger grandsons from someone on here, got it in Friday, and OMG I wanted to keep it for myself.

Why are they so darn cute?

I have an XR and 11” pro and definitely do not NEED a mini, but now I just HAVE to have one.

I have a problem. I just ordered myself 3 watch bands to try and contain this.

Someone please - I need an intervention.

You have unfulfilled Emotional/Psychological needs that are going unmet and you are trying to cover with new shiny objects!!!

Please seek help!! :D

So much enabling on this forum. ;-p

I’m considering it, only because I have someone that might want my 11” pro. If she doesn’t want it though, I’m just gonna keep my 11, be happy, and get over it, although I MAY still buy a mini. ;)

Don't Rationalize!!

So are this new Mini and Air the only A12 devices with headphone jacks, or does the iPhone 7 have the jack?

I sort of like the headphone jack. Apparently, other people don't, for some reason. Maybe the same people are wire-phobic. I can understand that. Wires all around them like creeping vines.

Mental health issue?

If one is VERY creative and Handy, This little iPad mini makes a really nice Car Audio Control head in many cars that sport a double DIN configuration (Models from 2008 or newer have MANY big screen radio installations that could be customized, and the Mini is much better than any possible version of Apple Car Play or whatever they're calling it. The only issue is how popular will theft be, OR!!!! maybe the challenge will be "How to connect/disconnect the Tablet to take it with you each time you exit the vehicle. (Trut me... all of this has already been done even as far back as the original MINI)

I'm been waiting for the Mini 5 to go on a "real" sale ($75-100 within the next 4-6 weeks) so that I can trade my Mini 4 in toward it and be only about $175+ out of pocket. So in the meantime, I put a new matte protector on the 4, and picked up an Adonit Dash 3 stylus to tide me over... and an interesting thing is happening. I like how well the Dash 3 works with the Mini 4. The Dash 3 is much smaller than the Apple Pencil and is a good match for the smaller Mini... and because the Mini 4 is so small, the palm rejection feature within GoodNotes 4 is adequate to overcome the lack of hardware palm rejection.

Now I'm not in a rush for the Mini 5 sale to arrive. I can wait. :) Maybe Apple should've produced a "Golf Pencil" for use with the Mini.

I just ordered a Mini 5, Verizon, 256 GB, WiFi/Cellular, Space Grey for $479.99 that is $200.00 off from Best Buy.
Total out the door and first months access was $513.59

So envious, I live in a regional area in Australia, no such thing as deals like that, I even had to pay full price for an iPhone SE after Apple made it obsolete.

I traded in an old iPad Mini 4, and got $135 for it. Also had an old Surface tablet that I sold to a guy for $200. So, I got the 64 gig model for less than a hundred dollars out of pocket. It is light years ahead of the Mini 4. If you have an old iPhone or iPad laying around that you don't need, the trade in program really defrays the cost.

I took the plunge, but I'm not finding much use for the mini: I still would rather use my XS Max if I want to use a smaller device. Sitting on the couch with the Mini is less than ideal because I have to hold it in my hand the whole time: it doesn't rest naturally in my lap like a larger iPad. When I'm out and about, the iPhone works better for me than the Mini, and if I need an iPad, I tend to reach for the larger model.

I can see why others love it and will put it to good use, but for me, the Mini will just collect dust, so it's going back.

I'm wondering if that's what would wind up happening at my house too. If I have to hold something in my hand, my phone is just easy, and if I'm gonna rest something in my lap, my 11" pro works just fine. Do I really need another Apple device just for reading in bed? I mean I still WANT one because I just want all the Apple things. ;-p

I can see that point of view. A phone is nice because you can comfortably grasp both sides of it with one hand. That increases its approachability and comfort by a huge factor. And of course a larger iPad is nice because it has a bigger screen.
So in some ways, I agree the mini is an awkward size. BUT I also don’t find iPhones nor larger iPads the best size for a dedicated casual consumption device at home—phone because the screen is too small, and larger iPad because I can’t hold it one-handed for long periods. So for someone like me, I find the mini the better device to fill this role, especially for things like reading (though I’m also pretty much dependent on a pop socket).
But as I alluded to, I don’t think the mini size is ideal. Even though my mini is by far my most used device at home (and I have many Apple devices), I’ve long said that I wished it was smaller for the purposes of approachability and comfort—specifically the width of a nexus 7, which was designed to have as big of a screen as possible, while still being able to comfortably grasp both sides with one hand for long periods (does not have to fit in front pockets, unlike a phone). To me, that’s the ultimate size of a dedicated casual consumption device.
So I am in the camp of the mini, but I sometimes look into your camp, though I actually wish for a third camp. But I’d agree, if you’re satisfied with the size of your phone as a casual consumption device, or satisfied with the size of a larger iPad as a casual consumption device (ie. not wanting to hold it one-handed), or satisfied with the combination of those two devices, then you probably won’t get much use out of a mini.

My new "dilemma" as well. I don't own an iPad of any sort, but the Mini is really appealing to me lately. Probably just a 64 gig Wi-Fi model. No real need for one; my imagined use case would mostly be during my morning coffee shop runs on the motorcycle. Often I'm just there to enjoy a quiet morning off work, read a book and relax. My XR usually serves any online needs I might have but the form factor of the Mini seems like it would be ideal for me, carried along on the bike and not needed for more than just light browsing, texting, etc. Which the iPhone already does. It's just a want, but it's an increasingly PERSISTENT want, lol.

UPDATE: No, still haven't pulled the trigger yet but after hemming and hawing all day I "made" myself ride over to the Scottsdale Quarter Apple Store. Just to look, mind you..... it was side by side with the new iPad Air, which is also just lovely but I still feel the Mini is more for me. The Air, while very nice, just feels too big for what I want an iPad for. Edging that much closer..... Pay day is next Friday. Hmmmm.....

Hey, you can relax; you don’t have as serious a problem as I have. Let me explain. I currently possess, not counting Macs, the following:

iPad Air 2 (now my daughters)
iPad Pro 10.5 (and recently sold the 12.9 2017)
iPad Pro 11
iPad Pro 12.9 2018

There were a couple days where I had four, 256gb WiFi Pro iPads in use... Ridiculous, yes, but I don’t have to explain myself!

And just yesterday, I picked up an iPad Mini 5 after waiting so many years. I was really hoping the 2018 Pro design would carry over and make the 11” redundant for me, so I almost considered skipping the Mini... but I had an iPhone 6, 5S, Cellular Watch 3, and Mini 2 that I traded in for credit at the Apple Store which brought the cost down of the 64gb Mini 5 to... .... $19.91. It was the first time paying for an Apple product did not hurt!

I love the Min’s form factor. My iPhone X is too small and cramped to be texting for long periods of time and I’m constantly zooming in on webpages. The Mini 5 does not have those issues and fits perfectly in my back jeans pocket and doesn’t have a camera bump so I just prefer to carry it naked and set it down wherever if I have to. This one will be a keeper just like my former Mini 2 so I’m not worried too much about maintaining its resale value.

Also picked up the Logitech Crayon for quick notes and for the ability to TURN IT OFF and carry in my pocket. Although the double tap eraser on the Pencil 2 has spoiled me, I manage. Overall, the Mini is great for just wandering and doing things around the house like cooking.

I decided to give my iPad 3 Cellular to a relative as it was only something like £38 that Apple would give for it. Didn’t even think to check the trade in value of my 5s. Must have been thinking that you could only trade iPads for iPads, oops.

I see you're in the UK so the official trade-in policy might be different from ours here in the USA, but this is what I learned from my experience:

First I went to the Giveback webpage, entered the Serial #'s for my four devices and answered the few questions about each one. My devices showed signs of wear, but nothing to suggest abuse. This gave me the following "trade-in" values, subject to change of course:

iPad Mini 2, 16GB, WiFi - $76
iPhone 6, 16GB - $90
iPhone 5S, 32GB - $40
Watch Series 3 Sport, 42MM, LTE - $153

What they don't tell you on the website is that each device you bring to the store for trade-in has three levels of "value" depending on how you choose to conduct business with Apple after the trade --which I'll get to later-- oh they also don't mention that they can only accept ONE device for credit towards immediate purchase of a new device, per transaction. You are also allowed to use as many gift cards to pay off the remaining balance of a transaction. Bear in mind the subtle difference of "trading-in" your device (limit of 1 per transaction) into an immediate purchase versus accepting a gift card offer for use at a future date....

So we went through the tedious task of checking each device's serial # into their database, and fortunately for me, we discovered the iPhone 6 could be worth up to $150 if I chose that device for credit towards the purchase of a new device (Mini 5). Otherwise, I could accept a gift card instead for $90. I don't remember what the third option was nor it's value.

I don't remember what the credit-towards-purchase value was for the 5S or Mini 2, but they were each less than the $150 I'd get for the iPhone 6. Strangely however, they noted that the Watch had a value of $153 across the three different levels. This is where the employee offered a strategy that I was too sleep deprived at the time to have thought of on my own: despite the Watch being the most valuable at $153, there was no difference and thus no penalty no matter what you did afterwards. The iPhone 6 however, was valued at $150 towards an immediate purchase, OR as a $90 store gift card for any future purchase. Now it's obvious that is a large penalty (-$60) to incur for choosing to go the Gift Card route.

So my happy ending was tallied as such:

iPad Mini 5 - $399 + tax
iPhone 6 16gb (-$150)
Watch 3LTE (-$153)
Mini 2 16gb (-$76)
iPhone 5S 32gb (-$40)
Remaining Balance - $19.91 :D

I hope that info helps someone out there which a bunch of devices with severely degraded batteries like I did :)
