Does the speed matter if the software isn't taking advantage of it?

most of the times software don't push the processor to the limits, but, when you're gaming and doing other heavy stuff, that's when the software utilizes each and every bit of speed.:)

How is it objective when a device can do better on it simply by throwing a couple of lines into the code and get a better score?
That's not how they do it.
Jesus! He opens a thread and he doesn't know what he's talking about.

So there wasn't a couple of lines of code on the S4 that made it up clock to where it got a better score on a benchmark?

Interesting.

I think those who are really into tech feel this way and its something I have noticed a lot reading on here. Quite a few people, myself included, couldn't really give a damn as long as the phone is nice to use and is responsive however. I think it is a case of, whatever floats their boat. :)

Unfortunately, with all of the crapware that comes pre installed on all of the Android phones these days, the higher computer like specs are necessary for a smooth experience. The Galaxy S4 comes to mind.

It seems, at least to me, that we have gotten to a point where they have no point. Not only that, but between the Bay Trail thing and the S4 thing, I'm starting to even get tired of reading the word benchmark.

Companies have made them pointless by playing to them.

So why do we still give them credence?

I prefer real world testing myself. Don't tell me about benchmarks etc. Show me based on what the user actually did on the phone. Not some random score.

My thoughts are.... well, mainly that I saw everyone else bragging and I needed to as well. Otherwise they'll take my membership from the cool kid's club away.

On a more serious note, I hadn't thought of that. But I know that means nothing. What does 5300 mean anyway? I don't even know why I put it on there. :D

Man if your going to accuse Samsung of cheating at least get your facts straight.

First there is a snapdragon version gs4 and 3 different exynos octo core versions, yes 3

We have the 1.9 GHz snapdragon
We have the 1.6 GHz exynos no LTE modem
We have the 1.6 GHz exynos with LTE modem
And we have a super exynos that only came out in south Korea and will only work on there network with a advanced LTE modem and clocked to 1.8ghz and will only hit 1.8ghz when being benchmarked and runs at 1.6 like the other occto core running everything else.

That chip is out of production because it uses so much power and has a huge problem switching from a7 cores to a15 cores and got replaced with the ecynos evolved soc that will come out when the note 3 hits the streets.

the super clocked exynos is hitting its claimed clocks by Samsung not going higher then what they advertised

You're missing the forest for the tree.

That was only a specific example, but the idea was more along the lines of "benchmarks aren't indicative of real world performance". I might have been rather poor at saying it, and for that I apologize.

No your agenda was clearly to state how Samsung is cheating and optimizing the galaxy s4 and even brought up Intel.

Big freaking deal that Samsung made a super clocked version of its flagship device and only sold it in Korea with a hard locked modem firmware to only use there base bands and omg its actually hitting its advertised 1.8ghz speed when being benchmarked

All the 30 million galaxy s4 sold run as advertised and hit there speeds on any task but that one special version that will up clock to 1.8ghz.

I guess you missed the part where Samsung says that phone runs at 1.8ghz and if they advertised it at 1.6 like the other octo cores you would be right that they were cheating and optimizing for benchmarks but they advertise the phone as clocking up to 1.8ghz not 1.6 like the other octo core versions

Your just sour because it blows the doors off of any iPhone and trying to put bad press on it to justify its scrores.you are the same person that will be first to post and brag about benchmarks when a new iPhone comes out and beats the out dated galaxy s4.

I mean you even have geekbench scores in your Sig for Christ sake

Just re read your first 2 posts in this thread and try to tell me its not about Samsung .that is all you talk about when they did nothing wrong other then showing people what a 1.6 octo core does against a 1.8 in benchmarks

I care about whether or not it beats the iPhone? Why should I care about whether or not it beats a phone I don't have? I've had one iPhone, the 4S, and had that for a few months (maybe 4-5?).

As for the geek bench thing... you got me. It's gone as soon as I put this post down.

As for if the iPhone 5S beats some phones in benchmarks? Still don't care. Seriously, I don't. It could win every benchmark, and I'd still be trumpeting the experience. If it wins every benchmark but loses on experience, then it's not a good phone. But it's weird that you make this somehow about how I'm supposedly rooting for a phone I don't even have.

Why are most spam e-mails about increasing penis size? ;)

Of course I'm sure there are a few people who actually use benchmarks as a way to attempt to categorize devices by power to make purchasing easier for consumers or something equally beneficial.

Then why in your first 2 post do you bring up Samsung and make them look like they are deceiving benchmarks when you really don't care about them? Your post was about not being able to use benchmarks because you can't trust them and Samsung is optimizing them with the gs4 remember

Because 8 millionths of a second counts in the real world. I need my apps to open before I tap them.

Samsung was an example.

If you read my first post, and really read it this time, the idea of optimizing was one of two points. The first was that they were pointless.

But people latched onto that because I insulted their favorite brand.

Disagree. The Moto X has "lesser specs", yet it is a smoother experience than the GS4.

Exactly!

Not true. The vast majority of the time, software doesn't use but 2 cores on a phone, so on a quad-core device, much of it is going unused. Software really hasn't caught up to hardware.

I used benchmarks when using Android before and after overclocking. I would overclock for better performance especially when it came to emulators. Overclocking my Xoom from 1ghz to 1.7 made a night and day difference when running Nintendo 64 and Playstation games. Benchmarking helped to let me know if the increase in speed was worth it. If 1.5ghz was about the same speed benchmark wise as 1.7ghz then I would know to stick with 1.5ghz.

On iOS its pointless. Benchmarking across platforms is just silly.

I don't pay any attention to them when comparing iOS to Android.

I guess what I was getting at, is that even though the GS4 has top of the line specs. It has a less than buttery smooth user experience. Either way the rumored specs of the upcoming Note 3 are too good to ignore!

I don't really care about the rumored specs of the Note 3. I'm not impressed by them at all. Specs are to a point now where they are delivering greatly diminishing returns. I'd much rather see some real innovation. Samsung needs to spend more time coming up with complete solutions, and worry less about specs. I don't want to see them bring another phone to market with half-done features, like they did with the GS4. At this point, I want to see compelling software. There isn't much on the specs side of things that I would find particularly compelling in today's market.

Specs help future proof a device.

I agree with you on software 100% that's why I'm still using a 4S. The 5 doesn't DO anything my 4S can't software wise. On the same note the specs of the 4S is what is keeping it that way compared to the 4 which only real difference is less hardware speed specs.

While I would agree in reference to the GS4, the GN3 seems to offer many innovative, and compelling software features in relation to the SPen. Even though most people I know don't seem to use it much.
