Air, edge. It’s for those who have FU money.

I hate how Apple could’ve one up Samsung by using Silicon Carbon battery but instead they came up with this BS, oxymoron MagSafe battery. I can’t remember but does the Air have the Anti-Reflective display because Samsung also decided to not include it.

I hate bringing the edge, I tried it for a few days but if you’re going to use a case IMO it beats the purpose. Samsung was offering $400 off with any trade-in which is why I considered it.

The Air is already getting some big discounts on some European Amazon sites. And in stock all over the place.

Clearly selling WAY below Apple’s expectations.

It would have needed a new battery tech as bembol suggests, or a new camera, or a new SOMETHING (other than a 5G modem, LOL).

As it is, it kinda feels like a parts-bin phone even though it’s new. It’s got a very Tim Cook feel if you know what I mean.

(On the other hand, it’s probably the best of the new iPhones for me. But it’s probably a sales flop. At this point I’m not sure it’ll get a second version.)

You cant really say its a parts bin iPhone, when literally everything is new about it. Thinner, new modem C1X, N1 chip, unique 6.5" display, the durable titanium chassis, most of the components in the camera housing...nothing is from the parts bin.

I didn’t say it was a parts-bin phone, just that it feels that way. The new modem is a risk rather than a selling point. Most people who care at all would prefer a high-end Qualcomm. But mostly, modems are invisible and unloved.

The camera is the same one that has been in the regular iPhones forever. Doesn’t generate much excitement. It draws attention to the missing ultrawide compared to the iPhone 17.

The battery is the same old chemistry that has been giving iPhone users problems for years, just smaller than other iPhones.

It uses titanium, but that only appeals (to anyone who cares) compared to the other new phones. The old Pro phones already had it. So it’s not dazzlingly new.

In fact there’s no exclusive new ‘wow’ feature anywhere. It’s not even all that light at 165 g, since Apple was terrified of repeating bendgate and made it strong AF.

An exclusive camera would have gone a long way to getting people’s attention. Wouldn’t even have had to be clearly better, just exclusive to the Air (so people can tell themselves stories about the benefits).

I fully expected a new battery chemistry. Have you noticed Apple often releases a significant new product at exactly the moment that a particular tech matures enough to be used in a mass-market product? The Air lacks that headline new tech or feature.

(I still think it’s a great phone for the right people – like me! – but I think we can already tell the market didn’t accept it very well.)

It is amazing I held and used it. Like the Samsung edge I just hate, though I understand why they didn't put Silicon Carbon, Anti-Reflective and Ultra Wide...

I have no issues with the battery life, these days if it last all day I'm good. I just felt they're saving it for next year.

I guess they're waiting for the Air Pro/2.

Again, if I had FU money I wouldn't hesitate buying the Air. Caseless of course.

If silicon carbon battery really doesn’t have as long a lifespan then I’m glad they didn’t. It last all day for me and I would tanker have a long life in a battery.

Keep in mind that Apple isn’t really promoting the Air much, or even the base model, at this point. All the heavy marketing push is for the Pro models. That suggests they expect these models to be sold through carriers as customers’ contracts expire.

Curious. How do you know its "Clearly selling WAY below Apple's expectations"?

Jealously basically.

It’s mostly iPhone pro owners who feel the need to project their insecurities about not having the highest prices iPhone means it can’t be good.

Deep down they know they’re using an iPhone 11 Pro with a bigger camera bump.

Old tech compared to the Air's futuristic look and feel.

The Air is in stock everywhere while the rest of the 17 series are on back order.

Now if Apple's estimates had been correct, all of the models including the Air would have been on backorder around the same time.
That is an assumption; know way of knowing unless you are a higher up at Apple.

Well, it wouldn’t fly in a court of law, but when Amazon France is selling the Air at an 11% discount a couple of weeks in, it’s a pretty safe assumption that something went wrong.
Probably because the Air is marked up there compared to the US market and that just brings it to even with the price in USD. They are trying to move units yes, but they are overpriced there to begin with.

That's totally it. "Jealousy"

Deep down, people who didn't pony up for an Air are actually embarrassed to even pull out their old thicc boy iPhone.

You nailed it!

My iPhone 13 Mini has been putting on weight from stress eating and being so depressed that it's not an Air.

All iPhones are marked up by about the same amount in Europe (compared to the US). At launch I worked out the percentages on all of the 17 generation in the major EU markets plus the UK and there was not enough difference to make going for one phone or even one market worthwhile.

European prices include VAT at about 20%, for what it’s worth (you may know that).

Meanwhile the regular 17 is sold out everywhere in all colours and configurations, while the Pros can mostly be found in stock but are not yet discounted like the Air.

At the end of the day, it’s your opinion and it’s nothing more than an assumption.

Unless you are some Apple executive and have inside info.

People in general need to quit using stock as the reason for gauging overall sales and demand. It's simply not a great gauge.

First, it's really region (and even local store) specific - for every "out of stock" and "in stock" example I've seen on this thread (and others), I could counter it with literally the opposite info in my region, one of the most highly populated regions in the U.S.

Second, being in stock or out of stock is not completely meaningless, but almost. Nobody has any idea how much stock Apple is actually providing to a given store/region. Example: their analysis says they should send 100k units to a given region with 3 high volume stores; based on that analysis, the breakdown should be 40% Pro Max, 30% Pro, 25% Standard, and 5% Air. If they sell 6k Airs, 24k Standards, 39k PMs, and 29k Pros, are you going to say the Air is selling well b/c it's showing out of stock? No, you shouldn't anyway.

They're making estimates, and if they're off in their estimates, it simply means they were off in their estimates in that specific region, nothing more. And unless you can quote something official like, "in 80% of regions in the world, Apple underestimated Air demand and is out of stock with 2 month delays", you can't correlate your anecdotal region supply/demand with actual sales and demand.

Not sure it's dislike, it's just so many a programed that they have to have the best, and in their mind the best is the Pro because it has the word pro in the name. The best for everyone is different, I traded in my 15PM for the Air and couldn't be happier, I easily get just as much battery life and the new modem seems to be far more efficient at when tethering which I do quite a bit and would just kill my 15PM.

Apple also didn't do themselves a favor when all they said about the Air was "All day battery life", that scared people, but it beats my 15PM every day. Really I find the battery a non issue and I'd imagine it would be for many people.

The camera is also fine and really from anywhere from 1x to 3.9x it's about the same as any other 17 phone and compared to my 15PM even the digital zoom is decent up to 6x as the 15PM telephoto never really impressed me that much, no way it was going to compete with even a compact camera.

Buy what you like and if you don't return it and move on, I don't dislike any of the 17 series phones and at some point might try a base 17 as it really seems like a nice phone for the price.

If you look at AT&T trade in values you can still get 1100 off the Pros with trade in of a Iphone 13 or newer but you only got 830 off the air for the same trade in. Now AT&T has lowered the trade in value to 700 toward the Air and its still at 1100 for the pro. So if you are trading in at AT&T the Air will cost you $300 but the pro would be free. Does this mean the Air is doing better than expected so they are pushing more people toward the PRO?

If you’re an iPhone Air hater or someone who looks down on iPhone Air users, this thread is for you. Let’s have a constructive discussion about your feelings and thoughts and why you feel this way.
I think the iPhone Air is a very nice phone and I don't hate the users of this device or regard them negatively. I think what many are instead responding to is the belief among some on this forum that owning an Air makes them some type of elevated being that should be admired. As if owning a particular device signals intelligence or sophistication. What it signifies is you went into a store or went online and you bought a nice thing.

No one who has an Air is presenting themselves like that, it really just sounds like people are offended that others bought an Air and really like it and have the inclination to talk positively about it.

The problem is reviewers and blogs were bashing the Air before it even came out, and within the first week after release that continued. So those that bought the Air and enjoyed it early on felt the need to defend themselves from the start, and came onto forums like this one with an (understandable) chip on their shoulder. Then that chip on their shoulder caused them to come across as somewhat condescending or unnecessarily angry, and the "other side" has responded accordingly.

It's typical online behavior in today's world. It won't really stop until everybody realizes, "Hey, we're actually not in disagreement as much as we think here and these are just phones and we can all buy what we want and respect each others' decisions". But then the trolls (bots?) and 1% that have overly strong opinions about this stuff (on both sides) throw fuel on the fire and keep it going...

Edit: and ironically, the reviewers and bloggers who contributed to this at the beginning get to come back and say "wait, I was wrong!" and get more clicks/revenue in the process...

Sure some people are defending themselves for having an Air, but I think most people are just sharing their positive opinions about it, and that in turn upsets trolls and haters who don’t want anyone to enjoy a phone that has a new form factor simply because it has less cameras and battery life. They don’t even want you to be happy about it so they jump down the throats of anyone who praises the Air.
